Remember way back in the day when Nicolas Cage was set to play the Man of Steel, with Tim Burton directing? Fortunately, that draft of the script didn’t feature a giant spider, but it did feature a costume design that is so radically different from anything we’ve seen Superman wear before, that I think it would have radically change an iconic hero for decades…
The images are from VFX artist Steve Johnson, and for the first time, we get a look at the bullet that Superman dodged.

They actually look quite cool and interesting, just not for a Superman film.
Damn, this is brutal. I mean on another character it could actually be cool, it is very unique, but not for good ol’ supes. Dodging a bullet indeed.
When you have to actually BUILD all the muscles for your hero…that’s a sign. However, having worked in the title belt business for awhile I do think that the “S” plate would be a good design for a belt, but would suck ferret butt as a Superman costume.
Ah, another case of, “Look ma! I’m a designer!” Stop trying to show how cool and clever you are. You want to impress us, you want to do your job well? Figure out how to take what’s on the page and make it work in the real. Stop over thinking it.
The costume doesn’t make the hero. He could wear a sweater with a “S” symbol on it, and he still could be great. Now it would take a good writer/director but you can make nearly everything work. Even a Nick Cage Superman, but not with Tim Burton in the director’s chair.

We look at this and laugh “sure dodged a bullet there” ..and then the realization dawns…no flight, sucky “costume”.

i thought it looked cool, especially for a recovery suit. a scientific take on the black suit
Must admit, the Electric Superman Symbol actually looks quite cool in the real world. The rest of it….not so much.
The Nick Cage face is much scarier than the costume redesign. Personally, I don’t think the comic costume will ever look right on a live person. So far, the only ‘tights’ costume I’ve seen that really worked was Spider-Man’s. The other costumes that worked–Nolan’s Batman, Smallville’s Green Arrow and the X-Men movies–involved significant redesigns to account for–you know–actual human bodies.

In that costume, I’d hope that if trouble arose, that Superman would just go and hide behind a rock.
