The John Carter series has been in the public domain for years, and with Disney making a run at the movie, it makes perfect sense for Marvel to announce John Carter: A Princess of Mars mini-series to be launched in September 2011.
According to the press release, the company has been working with the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate to develop the property, and the estate will consider anything done to the mini-series to be official canon, “adding new layers to the rich mythos created by Burroughs.” Ouch, Dynamite Entertainment must be stinging after a comment like that.
“With our new partnership with Marvel Entertainment, we believe we have found the best creative force to revive the thrills and adventures in the 21st Century of the legendary John Carter of Mars. We are looking forward to introducing this original interplanetary adventurer to a new generation of fans and await the first issue with great anticipation,” said James Sullos, President of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.
Roger Langridge and artist Filipe Andrade will bring the series to life for the low cost of $2.99.

Why is he riding a chicken?
How arrogant. Marvel is ticking me off more and more lately with their attitude toward other publishers.
Marvel evil lacky (basically any Marvel employee): “Wait, someone is having success with a series and we can legally steal it!? Sweet! To the idea/success robbing mobile!! *Cue slightly different version of Batman’s TV music*”
I don’t care if it’s made of gold and cures cancer, not reading it I have SOME self respect left.
Except that they aren’t “stealing” anything, they likely won’t do it anywhere near as well and that art looks atrocious, but it is public domain. Disney making the movie (which was probably in the works longer than the other comic book series has been out) makes perfect sense that they’d get a comic out about it. But honestly, look at the guys’ legs up there, who would pick that up on art alone? That looks so bad.
That art is horrible. Looks like it came right of a Pharaoh’s tomb.
I’ve been liking the Dynamite series, and with limited resources, when it comes to this, I won’t be making mine Marvel.
And given that it’s been in the public domain for years, does anyone care what the official canon is?
So in the new official canon, will John Carter be rebooted every few years?
“John Carter” only sold well when the paperbacks in the late sixties and early seventies reprinted his adventures with “The Almost Always Semi-naked Goddess Bitch” on the cover… I have tried and tried to read these E.R.B. stories… and I found them… less than TARZAN. (And, after the third novel compilation of pulp novels… I was done.) I was also in the middle of middle school. Got sent to the principal’s office for reading Doc Savage and The Shadow paperbacks at “lunchtime”.
So, what I have been taught… Pulp Fiction can get you home early… so you can put any “John Carter of Mars” paperback at the very bottom of the stack of stuff you were gonna read!
