While it may have taken longer than Hollywood would have liked, the man who illegally uploaded a workprint copy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine was sentenced to one year in federal prison. To date, this is one of the longest and hardest penalty handed down for Internet piracy, and no doubt has the SOPA supporters jumping up and down with delight.
“We believe this is the longest sentence ever imposed for a defendant charged with uploading a single copyrighted film to the internet,” assistant United States Attorney Lisa E. Feldman, who works with the FBI’s computer and intellectual property crimes section, told Variety.
Fox claims the movie was downloaded over 15 million times, and cost the studio millions in lost revenue. With recent talk of the Stop Online Piracy Act, currently in discussion in Washington, D.C., and the fact that Megaupload.com was the site that Gilberto Sanchez uploaded the movie to, this is just going to add more fuel to the fire of the online piracy debate.

Good, he deserves it. Not because what he did was illegal, but because the movie quality was horrible from what I heard…
Couldn’t they at least have made a big fuss over a GOOD movie?
