Many were saddened when Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Amanda Conner announced their departure from Power Gril, and were curious who would be replacing the team.  DC announced Judd Winick will be taking over the writing duties, with Sami Basri doing the art.

“It is with GREAT fear and excitement that Sami and I leap into this gig. Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, and Amanda Conner have bought an amazing, fresh, and inventive rebirth to this character. Our greatest challenge will be to remain faithful to what they’ve created and also take Power Girl to a new place. As far as the course that the story will take, I’ll be uncharacteristically forthcoming : The story is tied to JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST. Not CHAINED to it, but tied. Power Girl has a history with the JLI that will be explored. A lot.”

What does everyone think of the new team?  You’re probably very familiar with Winick’s writing, but if you want to see what Basri brings to the table, take the jump for the cover to Power Girl #13.

When The Flash #1 arrives in stores next month, be on the lookout for the variant cover by Tony Harris.  It looks amazing, and for fans of the Starman series, it’s a trip down memory lane.

During the Warner Bros. presentation at Showest, President and COO Alan Horn said, “As we ease out of Harry Potter, we hope to bring you the excitement of the DC Library.”

While it isn’t a definite confirmation that we’ll see a DC movie each and every year, it does seem like a pretty good guess.  After all, we’re getting Green Lantern in 2011, Batman 3, and a new Superman movie is in the works, as is a Flash movie.  If they suits have their stuff together, Wonder Woman, Atom, Hawkman, and a JLA movie could carry the studios through to 2020.

DC announced the return of Terry McGinnis in a new Batman Beyond over the weekend (although I’m pretty sure we knew a new one was coming), and now we have a few more details on the project.

  • The new series will kick off in June and will be written by Adam Beechen, with art by Ryan Benjamin.
  • The series will be a six-issue mini (perfect for the trade).

Batman Beyond will pit the future Dark Knight against his own past, as a dangerous force has begun to target Bruce Wayne’s old foes.  Can Wayne’s past put Terry’s future in danger?

“The dark future of the legendary animated series comes to the DCU in a six-issue miniseries, as Terry McGinniss, Bruce Wayne’s young successor as Batman, faces his deadliest foe yet — a mystery murderer from the Dark Knight’s past! Old faces return, new allies and enemies step into the light, and the partnership between Terry and Bruce — not to mention Terry and Bruce themselves — might not survive!”

Wonder if this somehow will tie into regular Batman continuity, and if Ra’s al Ghul is behind this in some way?  If it is not in continuity, will it be set in one of the alternate Earths we saw in Final Crisis?

Stephanie Brown has really come into her own as the new Batgirl, but when her old flame shows up, things can either go so wrong, or so, so right.

When Superman fights the big bads, he never holds back; even if that means dropping a safe, a truck, or a building on their heads.  Likewise, we’ve seen Superman deliver a punch that sends the villain soaring through the sky and crashing through buildings.  It makes for some really good action, but what about those people whose property has been damaged?  Is there any recourse?  Do the insurance companies of the DCU have special riders for Acts of Superheroes, or do the insured hope they can meet the deductible?

This past weekend at the Emerald City ComiCon, Goeff Johns talked up the JSA appearance on Smallville, and confirmed the heroes would return to the show before the end of this season.

“They do appear again at the end of season on ‘Smallville.’ The hope is for every DC character to appear outside the comic books. Correctly.”

That’s got to be really good news for the CW, as the television network saw their highest rating of the year the night Absolute Justice aired.  The big question is, “Who will appear next?”  Dr. Fate, Sandman, and Starman are dead, and there’s no way Green Lantern or the Flash will make an appearance, so who will it be?

Batman: Streets of Gotham artist Dustin Nguyen has brought to life characters of the DCU with his unique and striking art style. Dustin’s art work can also be found in the pages of Wildstorm, Supernatural, and the Friday the 13th books. A favorite among comic fans, I had the pleasure to speak with him about his career, comics and the return of Bruce Wayne.

Rejoice – for Magog does not appear anywhere in this issue! With that annoyance out of the way, will the All-Stars be able to stop Johnny Sorrow from summoning the King of Tears? The scene of urban destruction on the cover suggests not…

DC Comics is showing off the cover to Doc Savage #1 by John Cassaday.  While nothing new for long time fans of the pulp hero, the torn-shirt hero does look menacing.

Doc Savage #1 arrives April 14, 2010.

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in the Star Wars movies, has been cast as Abin Sur in the Green Lantern movie currently filming in New Orleans.  Also joining the cast is Taika Waititi who will play Hal Jordan’s best friend, Tom Kalamaku.

Green Lantern is set for a June 17, 2011 release.

One of the biggest stories coming out of the weekend’s festivities at MegaCon has to be the new that Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner are leaving Power Girl with issue #12.  Since the beginning, this team has created a fun world for Power Girl to play in, and without these three in place, I don’t know how many people will continue with the series.

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Palmiotti outlined the reason why all three were leaving the team

“But Amanda always said she could just commit to the book for a year, and as we got into the series we realized that we just couldn’t do the same type of book with another artist at this point and decided it was a good idea to leave with her and give another team a shot.”

I can understand not wanting to stick around if your artist stepped away from the project, but this is a real letdown.  DC said the replacement team would be announced this week.

Here’s your chance to shout out your thoughts on who you would like to see take over the series.  For artists, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Dodsons, and perhaps Bill Willingham as the writer.

Or – “What Happens In The Alternate Universe, STAYS In The Alternate Universe…”

As comics readers, I think we tend to think of the retcon as a modern invention, something that Roy Thomas or Steve Englehart created to offset the changing tastes of comics readers who weren’t gonna stand for all them talkin’ tigers and cartoon sidekicks with which the Golden Age was rife.  But dating back to the very first comics books ever, writers were in the business of creating stories to fill in the gaps between what we knew and what we didn’t.  For instance, did you know that Kal-El was well over a century old upon his landing in Smallville a couple decades ago?  If you didn’t, it’s time to relax with the beverage of your choice while Unca’ Matthew tells you a little story he heard in his long-ago youth.  Are you sitting comfortably?  Away we go!

This means something…

For the last couple of years, Grant Morrison has given readers of the Batman series some really out there moments, culminating with the apparent death of Bruce Wayne at the end of Final Crisis.  Now it’s time to bring things back to status quo, and the return of Bruce Wayne begins in the latest issue of Batman and Robin.
