is it just me or there's a lot of deluxe and omnibus edition coming out these days. they're releasing y:the last man in a deluxe edition soon. they released ex machina deluxe a few months ago. i'm currently listening to an interview with terry moore talking about a stranger in paradise omnibus. that's not talking about the absolute editions from DC.

i'm all for it, but if i have a complete series in trades (like y: the last man), i won't buy the omnibus, unless i REALLY love the series. if i don't already have the series in trades, it's probably because i'm buying others trades from other series that i care more about.

comic buyers and TPB/HC buyers are 2 different crowd (sometimes they mix), TPB buyers and omnibus buyers are the same crowd. after that they complain their sales are low.

anyway, that was my rant for the day.

It has to do with the resell attitude of the industry that goes something like this

A:  Man we sold out on those single issues of Batman didn't we?
B:  Yeah, but how are we going to make money now?  That was a one shot deal.
A:  We can get these numbnuts to buy it all again in a trade paperback.
B:  Trade paperback!?  I Love that idea.
Time Passes
A:  Man we sold out on all those trade paperbacks of Batman didn't we?
B:  Yeah, but how are we going to make money now?
A:  We can get these dipshits to buy it all again in an omnibus trade.
B:  Omnibus trade!?  I love that idea!
Time Passes
A:  Man we sold out on those Omnibus editions of Batman didn't we?
B:  Yeah, but how are we going to make money now?
C:  Maybe we should concentrate on telling really good stories that people will buy and cause the single issues to fly off the shelves?
A:  Who the fuck are you, coming in here with new ideas?  You're fired!  Get the hell out of my office.
B:  Dipshit.
A:  Yeah, what a fuckwad... Speaking of fuckwads, how 'bout we sell these fuckwads an Absolute Edition of the Batman books?
B:  Brilliant idea as always.

Moral of the story, we are all dumbasses for continuing to purchase these titles again and again and again.  I'm the biggest offender - I have the original issues of The Dark Knight Returns, then purchased the trade paperback, the tenth anniversary collected volume, and then the absolute edition.  All in all DC made over $200 because of my dumbassishness about rebuying these collected tomes.

If you think this is just a comic book industry thing, check out the movie and music industry for a repeat conversation.

yeah, i did that once or twice, but this is getting ridiculous. now every series has his comics, then trades, then omnibus/deluxe/absolute.

a few years ago, only a few titles were getting this treatment, maybe they deserved it maybe they didn't, but it was only a selected few.

releasing the comics, then the trade or omnibus, i'm all for that. but getting the comics, the trades then the omnibus, for every series out there, is a little too much.

bah, that's how the world works i guess. now i need to get back to my  dark comics that will depress me (that another problem i have with the industry, hurray for independant)

by the way mr schleicher, i know you listen to comic geek speak podcast, have you heard episode 532, where they talk with the owner of a comic book store. they talk about how the industry works, and all its flaws. it's a pretty good one.

I'm a huge Walking Dead fan.  I got into it through trades, and started buying the singles once I caught up (approximately issue 24 or so).  Since then I have continued to get the singles as well as the trades.  When I was down at Baltimore Comic Con and Kirkman himself was there, I contemplated picking up the hardcover books ... even though I've already got them TWICE!  Then I realized my wife would probably kill me.  I have no problem with it as long as it is for something you love.  For instance, I have the New Frontier trades ... but I'm probably going to pony up for the Absolute edition.

What I think is silly is how Marvel does those "must have" collections that are three issues for the price of one in between shipment dates.  Buying those in addition to singles ... then you are in fact a fuckwad.

i will always lean a direction and stay there.

i started Walking Dead in HC trades and will only buy it in HC trades.

Invincible: soft trades

i got a lot of Powers issues at a big sale and now its my mission to find all of them (Icon and Image)

but once i have them, i wont but them again in any format.

i will buy Y in its omnibus version, but only because its going to kick ass and i want to loan it out. i could prolly find all the trades used at Amazon of elsewhere and find them cheap but thats not what i want.

this is all just personal preference IMHO and i'm glad that the publishers give their custoemrs as many choices as they can have when buying a comic book.

yeah, and i'd love to hear his take on the state of the industry today compared to what it was before. i'm sure he have some great things to say.

i think they do a little too much like the DVD industry and the whole thing is going down the toilet fast. but that's just me.

the Comic Geek Speak cast that is being referred to was such a bummer

they made me never want to trust a dealer at a show; they suggested leaving a shop after looking at some prices if you dont see what you like because the guy selling was probably a crook

the way they talked about the industry like a shop owner buying too many books and forced to sell them really cheap just to break even and how Marvel and DC are like the Dem and Rep. in their partisanship depressed me

I mean, these two companies should want to embrace the so called Indie companies (i dont think DDP or IDW should be called Indie) and "Embrace Change" (LOL) when it comes.

I'd actually like to hear the thoughts of the MJ Podcast team on this same topic and give me some ray of hope that we arent going to have the bottom drop out again like in the nineties.

I mean, is it really that bad out there???
