Spider-Man is celebrating his 50th year, and we want to know what you think are the ten best Spider-Man stories of all time.  Use the forum to share your thoughts, your ideas, and your picks.

"Why?" you ask.

As you may have figured out, I never ask a question like this unless I have something simmering in the background.

"COOL!"

Yes, yes it is, but only if you get busy and start answering the question.

Are we talking a single issue or can it be a story arc?

The first thing that jumps to mind is "The Death of Gwen Stacy". It is one of the first times I know of where a major supporting character of the title hero was killed off by the villain in a brutal way.

The sheer impact (no pun intended) of how it affected Peter, especially in terms of the guilt he felt for thinking he'd caused it, was as emotionally charged and significant to character development as anything I know of in comics.

Don't remember the issue numbers of the name of the arc but the one where Pete has a cold and he's fighting Doc Ock's goons trying to get some isotope or something to save Aunt May and a big machine falls on him and he has to summon all his strength and RRAAAAH and he's free and he gets there in time and the day is saved.

Matthew, help me out here.

OK, bye.

(Oh, also Death of Gwen but it's been done ^^^)

Agreed about the death of Gwen, that was such a profound story that had lasting effects.

If we can say an arc, I'm rather partial to the whole black suit story beginning when he gets it up to and including it first becoming Venom.  I'm not a huge fan of what Venom has become, but I still like that story.  There is something almost creepy horror story about having a costume that turns out to be a living being.

If we are allowed to go outside the comics, I'm rather fond of the finale of the 90's FOX animated Spider-Man.  It was kinda weird, with the whole alternate versions of Spidey all together as a team, led by the "core" Spidey we'd seen over the years on the series.  But it was interesting to show how much his life would change by little differences (well, mostly little, some were huge and one wasn't even really any version of Peter but an actor, presumably meant to be from "our" world), as well as having the touching moment where he gets to talk with Stan Lee.

Gotta go with the original Hobgoblin mystery or the Doc Ock/Owl war. My personal favorites tend to be written by Stern or DeMatteis.

For me its Kraven's last hunt.  That was one of my favorites, just due to the storytelling and the tone shift from the normal Spidey narrative.
