I am trying to get my wife into comics and she is a big fan of horror/thriller books.  She really likes Stephen King books, and I plan on getting her "The Stand" when it comes out in trade.  But, I am looking for any other titles that people might suggest that would be along those lines.  I think the biggest thing for any book that in recommended is that the story is really good.  As long as the art doesn't take away from the story sub-par art could probably be tolerated.

Thanks for your help in advance.

I really enjoy walking dead in trades, but felt like "30 Days" spinoffs kind of cheapened it out.

Nudity aside, I thought "Girls" worked very much like the original "Night of the Living Dead"

What do you think about the new Authority series? To me, that's being written as superhero-horror. I think when a preview shows a baby-ghost-with-half-dead-face, I mean, dang.

walking dead = good
30 days of night = good
30 days of night spinoffs, those one shots = not good, and they cheapened ALL the good horror comics out there. I will admit to not reading them all, but "Bloodsucker Tales" left a "Return of Captain Marvel" aftertaste. Very bleh.

30 days of night: return to barrow was awesome, the rest was boring.

oh yeah, i juste rememberes a good adaptation of I Am Legend by Steve Niles. it's more an illustrated book than a comic book, but it is really good.

here's a more complete list of cool stuff. not sure if they're all in trades

cal macdonal mystery, criminal macabre
cal macdonal mystery, Last train to deadsville
cal macdonal mystery, Love me tenderloin
cal macdonal mystery, supernatural freak machine
damn nation
dark days
30 days of night
hack slash

you can also try the shaun of the dead comic adaptation. and there's always the army of darkness comics.

Thanks for that list.

I have ordered Criminal Macabre and Walking Dead.  Now, we will just have to sit back and see if you have converted another person to comic books.  Smiley

i'm sure you'll like it. i usually don't like horror (no, i'm not afraid, i just don't like it) and the titles i gave you are all good, at least in my opinion.

Hermit I am sure they are good, and I am sure I will enjoy them...

But the real test is that these are for my wife who has never read a comic book before.  She is also a lot more picky then I am so your are really going to be tested.   Grin Wink

One of the first trades I picked up when I came back into comics was for Dark Horse's Damn Nation.  A creepy vampire yarn about an infected United States that is bordered by ultraviolet fences and policed by an international force that looks to eradicate the vampire threat.  It's hard to track down these days, but it's a good read ... better than 30 Days of Night IMHO
