This is my second PbP experience and the second that's ended prematurely.
It is absolutely essential to have a DM who remains dedicated to the game. And that's no statement against Tondi, as I know how much commitment it can take.
Over the course of Shadow War I have:
Gone through a divorce.
Had two court hearings (over other things).
Refinanced my house.
Lost my job.
Started my own company from scratch.
Lost my former company car and had to suddenly find a new vehicle.
Gone through two romantic relationships, both now ended.
Dealt with the MS server crash (losing an entire section of the game forever).
Had at least four players go through the trouble of starting the game; then quit.
Lost the player who first talked me into DMing the game in the first place.
Lost two more of my original players due to their real life getting in the way (as it does for DMs as well).
Picked up a new solid player late in the campaign.
Had the entire campaign turned upside down when one of the players altered the entire timeline of everything that had happened before...then quit playing.
And some days I was simply tired.
Life will always happen until you're dead. But I'm still DMing and have been since February 14, 2010.
So, whoever steps up to the plate, I won't wish you luck because that isn't what it takes. It takes devotion and a true love for what you are creating along with your players.
I know at this point I am too burnt out to immediately pick up another DM assignment. But the rewards far outstrip the demands and I hope someone with skill and passion gets something off the ground for everyone soon.
