Just looking to get my game fix

Hello all, the char I envision is a ranger beast master.  I don't have any books so some help is needed on creation.  Can someone let me know what animal companions are available to 1st lvl ranger beast master?  I would like a halfling with a greatbow as large as he is and a spear.  His entire body and face are stained in a camo pattern.   I wanted a flying companion that could double as a mount which is why I choose the halfling.  His skills would focus on crafting with a weapon focus. (survival, crafting, nature).  I have no exp playing 4th edition so let me know if I'm wrong in anything.

Ok so after doing some research (thank you internet) I found out some fun facts.  A- halflings cant use greatbows.  B- Rapters companions do not "grow" with levels like the bear(from medium to large at fifth lvl).  C- halflings with a shortbow get access to a feat that does brutal damage. I saw something about a griffin rider feat so maybe I could set that up or maybe we could have some kind of quest to go and get a flying mount egg.  I'm excited about the possibilities, even if I can't get a flying mount.  The bear or boar could become mounts for me and offer some fun rp oppurtunitys as well.

Yay internets.  On a side note.  In a world of floating islands and some stage flying mounts are probably in everyones future.

So after sleeping on it and trolling forums for hours I've finely decided how I want to build this.
Halfling Ranger Beastmaster with a Blood Eagle companion (a blood red eagle)
My trained skills will be. Nature, perception, stealth, crafting and acrobatics.
Lvl 1 at wills
Twin strike (can someone tell me if this would work with a bow)
Careful attack
Lvl 1 encounter
Two fanged strike
Lvl 1 daily
Split the tree
Lvl 2 encounter
Invigorating stride.

I'm not sure what magical item I want but something that provides a static bonus.  I believe I saw a shortbow that lets you use point blank.  I know I want the halfling shortbow feat that does brutal.  Now I've still got a lot of questions on powers and abilities (such as the halfling racial) but I feel like I have a good start for not having any books to work with.  Can someone explain the system for getting attributes.  If anyone has recommendations please let me know, I feel like I'm flying blind here.

I'm not up to speed with most of the Beastmaster Ranger stuff, but there are a few things I have noticed.
There is no skill you can train in for 'crafting' your choices for ranger are Acrobatics, Athletics, Dungeoneering, Endurance, Heal, Nature, Perception, Stealth (of which you get to pick 5).

Twin Strike does work with ranged weapons.
Not sure how our beast companion works if you don't use attack powers with the beast keyword, but it must work somehow as all the builds I have seen take very few beast powers.

Thanks, Ill choose endurance then.  It seems the bird lets me use hunters quarry on whatever enemy is closest to her (Ruby).  I saw something about buying str, dex, con, cha, wis, int.  how does that work.

You start off with a score of 10 in each stat and then 'buy' more points in stats from a points allowance.

Theres a handy 'calculator' here;

http://www.asmor.com/scripts/4eAbilityScores/index.php

as a Halfling you get +2 to your Dex and +2 to either your Con or Cha

its normally acceptable to have a stat at 8, but no others below 10, up to Tondi- in the end tho Smiley

Str:   12 (+1) [+2]
Con:   20 (+5) [+6]
Dex:   20 (+5) [+6]
Int:   10 (+0) [+1]
Wis:   12 (+1) [+2]
Cha:   8 (-1) [+0]
So this is what I came up with after the racial to dex and con.  Would it be possible to climb into the trees during combat to rain arrows down? Could I take a feat to sneak attack, and if I did would it add damage dice to a normal attack(such as twin strike)

Looks like something got skewed in those numbers.  You usually can only get one stat as a twenty.  Ill have a close look.

Sure you could climb a tree in battle but it would take time and turns.  I think you can use climb as part of your move action but I'll check to make sure.  It may be a standard.

There is a multiclass feat that will enable you to use sneak attack, I take it quite abit, you can only do it once per encounter though I believe.

Thinking about the tree again, if there were low branches it wouldn't take long to climb.  I think climbing is half your speed per square so you could get at least 10 ft up.  So yeah, its probably a viable tactic.

Shadow Lostclan. Lvl 2 Ranger Beastmaster

Dex 16/+2 =18
Wis 12
Con 16/+2 =18
Str 12
Int 10
Cha 8

Trained skills:
Acrobatics (+2 racial)+5
Nature +5
Perception +5
Stealth +5
Endurance  +5
Thievery (+2 racial)+5

Lvl 1
At will Twin Strik
At will Careful Attack
Encounter Two fanged Strik
Encounter (racial) Second Chance
Daily Split the tree
Lvl 2
Encounter  Invigorating Stride

1st level feat
Halfling Shortbow Hunter- gain brutal 2 and range 20/40 to all shortbow attacks.

I was thinking about either beast protecter or weapon focus for my lvl 2 feat.  Do I apply my dex mod to shortbows or would I have to take weapon finesse.  How much damage is a shortbow going to do for me?  Does 4e still give out skill points?  Umm I think that's it for the questions, I believe I have a 4e players handbook at my house but it'll be next weekend at least till I get home.

Shadow lost his clan when two dragons destroyed his village fighting over the land it sat on.  He is more comfortably in the wilds then around other peopl.  Average height of 3ft, brown hair, dyed skin in swirls in brown and green, ice blue eyes. Bits of bone and wood worked into his hair and clothing.
