In the story she was released to get a team to Cyttorak in the Crimson Cosmos (I think) to let the god in on the Juggernaut not following the gods lead any longer, but her dealing with underworld demons and such IS her bag, and I thought it fit in so nicely with what I think her background should be.
Its nothing for Doc Strange to get possessed by a demon or allowing a possession for the greater good or some such from time to time. I think Illyana is a younger, rougher, more mystical and less "hands-on" magical version of Doc Strange who fits nicely in the X-Verse; and that's just fine.
Although, I think its her being an mutant that kind of holds her back from getting on the various mystical teams that have come and gone. She'd be great over in the Captain Britain sort of stuff.

I wonder what would have happened if the New Mutants title had never existed?
What if Professor X had never formed the team or shifted Kitty to it? What if Illyana had been integrated into the main team as a new member (like Kitty once was) and Kitty stayed with the X-Men too?
The dynamic between Kitty, Illyana, and Peter is strong and lends to great story possibilities. The X-Men title was already on top.
Given this scenario, both Illyana and Kitty may have been much more popular and get more focus than they do today. So, again, I think Marvel's attempt to recreate something that worked (the X-Men title) ultimately hurt some of the characters featured in it.

I think Kitty works best as a team based character (as most of the X-Men are designed to be) and is at the forefront of Uncanny X-Men and has been since her return from being the star of the best of the Astonishing X-Men. Most mutants do NOT have their own solo books. Wolvie just happens to have 3, but he is the exception in...well, just about every single comic book discussion of ANY sort. Its his attraction IMHO.
I think Illyana is about the same and should be getting more attention AWAY from the Young/New X-Men sort of titles. We have younger, newer mutants now thanks to Hope. Hopefully (see what i did there?) that happens in the X-Men revamping we're getting soon.
I think Wolverine was just one of those really good timing things. From the get-go he had the jump on being the anti-hero type. But in comics you can't get that sort of luck to last, simply because of the rate at which the stories come out and the changes the characters go through because of the rotating creators that only exists in comics to the level it exists in comics (meaning, you can have a different director or producer or writer for tv, movies whatever, but in those mediums you cannot have the characters go through the changes that are simply ignored or overlooked by the reader, and even if its not, they do it anyways). They just got lucky with Wolverine over time by using him in a way that just hit with the audience. I'm not saying that that can't be manufactured, all I'm saying is that in the case of Wolverine I do not think that it was manufactured. but the backlash is seen and heard and read everywhere with Wolvie being in so many titles. Its become a running joke...hmm, actually it became a running joke prior to the "event/tie-ins" running jokes, "relaunching at ish 1" joke. But it is not showing in the sales, where it really counts.

I agree that Kitty and Illyana work better as part of a team. Their personalities are such that it is the interplay between them and other characters that makes them fun to read. Kitty and Emma Frost is a perfect example.
Wolverine is better able to be his own guy because it's sort of his thing; appearing wherever a writer can fit him in and no one blinks much because, apparently, that's what Logan does.
If Wolverine didn't exist I suspect Marvel would get another character to fill that sort of role. But I don't think it should be Kitty or Illyana; even though my Siberian sweetheart's random appearances could be explained easier than Logan's due to her mutant power.

But you ARE Wolverine! The moodiness, the thing for younger women, the confusing origin story, the hatred of Slappy... Why would you ever wish yourself away??
I honestly don't think comics would be so drastically changed if Wolverine never existed. There would be changes for sure, and I don't consider him insignificant at all, but I thinks something or someone else would have filled that void. All the Wolverine spin-offs and ripoffs would be replaced by something else. Maybe Marvel's top character would be Mort the Dead Teenager instead of a a hairy canadian with metal coated bones, but otherwise I think comics wouldn't be drastically changed.

If Wolverine didn't exist, perhaps the Original Timberwolf would have had more of an impact. They did try a miniseries of him (that sucked) but due to drastic deviations from his original character to differentiate from Wolverine his was lame.
Read some Legion of Super Heroes to see how cool Wolverine can be.

If you can find them.
To see how cool Wolverine is NOW, go and get any of the books starring that character that are on shelves every single Wednesday.

I wish the Legion
was
that cool. I think they are.
I'd love it if the Legion got writers good enough to write decent stories.
Seeing Shrinking Violet and Dawnstar four times a month? Yeah, I could live with that.

I think the majority of characters are that cool.
Its just, like you said, telling them in a fun way that works.
I think 3 or 4 Legion books
would
sell if they only put them out and made a fuss over them just a bit, even if they weren't written very well...just like the X-Men
