The other day I was trying to build a playlist for my son's birthday party and thought I'd put some songs from The Muppet Movie on there.

But when I went to Amazon, the only ones listed as MP3s were covers, or re-recordings of the classics. Nowhere was the original soundtrack (or some kind of repackaging of the original soundtrack) available.

Looking into it, it appears that the last time the soundtrack was issued was 1993. Can you guys believe this?

Considering the fact that the Muppets had a very bad 90's I am not suprised.  Once the evil Mr. E had Henson out of the way, he set his sights on sesame street but failed.  Unfortunately he didn't know what to do with the part of the Henson empire that he had.

Are those from the recently released "The Green Album"?

I'm a little surprised they don't have it out now with the new movie coming out.  It would seem like the perfect time to snag nostalgic parents who will be taking their kids to see the new movie.

Yeah, The Green Album is the most recent, and don't get me wrong, it's fun to listen to the covers, but it seems essential to have the originals.

Could be a rights issue also.  It seems that when it was last released, Disney which clearly owned the Muppets had nothing to do with the album.

I think you may be right. I seem to remember hearing something about that on another podcast. Did you look at the price of the used '93 versions? The cheapest one is $60, but it goes all the way up to $155.
