I'm late to the party, I know, but I just saw the "character trailers" for X-Men.

Couple things.

First, as many have no doubt said, the character selection is a bit puzzling at first. My guess is that they wanted characters that either weren't in the previous 3 movies or characters that weren't PROMINENT in the first 3 movies.

Tempest is probably there to inject a little more diversity into the cast--even though her character is anywhere from 10 to 20 years younger than other "class" members from the books. In any case, can anyone else think of rational and positive reasons for THIS line-up?

Second, I'm not entirely sure I understand the chronology, here. So this all takes place in the 60's (obviously around 1962, with the Cuban missile crisis in the trailer), and Havok is obviously OLDER in this scenario than his brother (if, within this universe, they even ARE brothers), but does this mean that this all takes place 40 years prior to the 2000 movie?

If that's the case, Beast and Mystique would be in their 60's by X3.

A few things you have to realize are this.
1.  The first three X movies existed as much in this universe as the Adam West Batman existed in the Christian Bale Universe.
2.  Now that you have that out of the way you should take into consideration that this is a reboot that is supposed to be done over the next few decades in X-Time.  70's and 80's respectively.
3.  This is also brought to you by Fox studios.  Those that brought you the first three X-Movies.  This property is not yet a part of the Marvel studios that we see in the recent Avengers movies.
Enjoy.

All true, Slappy.

Although, Mystique being in First Class and having all those scenes with Magneto would explain why she might be his go-to girl in the previous X-Men films.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this flick has nothing to do with anything that has come before it; and I appreciate that.

Its sad that FOX ran their first trilogy so far into the ground that they couldn't possibly go anywhere with anything they use from the X-verse, including the Wolvie movie, seeing as anything coming out of the X-verse flicks is a lame reboot with the First Class of Origins tag securely fixed to the title.

With that said, does anyone really think FOX is going to learn from any mistake? I seriously doubt it and am convinced this movie is going to be a special effects powerhouse with an adequate story that fails to hit anywhere near where the X-Men is supposed to hit. I suspect we'll get some half-assed attempt at a sense of racism regarding the mutants, which always seems to fall flat because studios are just too damned weak and nervous to show racism in its true form, followed quickly by Xavier and Magneto, already set-up as lifelong chums by this point, having two separate hypotheses on how to move forward and deal with that racism, while all the while, a third party, probably the U.S. gov., because nothing is easier than hating someone who is different than you...unless you can both hate the government together, is scheming and, eventually, forces the two teams of mutants to work together against their common foe.

Spoiler alert? Probably Smiley

I blame the fact that they were too far ahead in the "super-hero boom" (ie, everything before Iron-Man) that they were still beholden to the elements that typically ruin movies, unlike the current movies coming out.  The current movies have been willing to fire people who are potentially going to negatively impact the film.

I doubt the common foe element is going to come up in this movie.  The entire thing looks to be setting up to show how Magneto and Xavier had their initial falling out and what that meant to the X-Men.

Fox is also just trying to hold onto the property.  Once they lose control they will lose it to Marsny.

But if Marsny had it would they try to fit that peg into the Avengers hole they've dug and snuggled all up inside like a womb of money? I wouldn't blame them for getting it there, and I would not mind seeing it (only because Wolverine should be on the Avengers Smiley I can't blame them for holding on to it if they can.

And if its good, all the better. @lantis makes strong points for me to be wrong, and I sincerely hope I am. I shouldn't be such a Debbie Downer anyways. Its a cool thing that comic book movies are so popular.

I think that unless they specifically aim to put an X character on the Avengers, they will stay separate parts of the same universe.  Something along the lines of a passing reference to something mutant related in The Avengers, and a reference to one of the Avengers in the more modern X stories.  Only enough to make the nerds giggle and say "did you see/hear that?"  Along the same lines as the Captain America references sprinkled into Iron-Man 2.

I agree with @lantis on this. The mainstream MU and the mutant universe tend to stay separate.

The last thing anyone would want to see is some mutie in the Avengers.

IDK

Those sprinkles ended up leading to the inevitable.

Avengers vs. X-Men is only a few bad decisions away from somewhere they may some day get to...or something Wink

People always said peanut butter and chocolate would suck together too. Back in some horrible, horrible time empty of that joy. Just saying

I'm not saying they'd suck together.  I'm saying they'd need a purpose for doing it other than just to do it.  And even at that point it probably wouldn't be a full crossover.  They'd just take the mutants they like the best and add them to the Avengers mix, just like they did with the comics.

If we get rid of Wolverine, it will set an example to the rest of those muties.

The best thing I've seen about "X-Men: First Class" so far: Wolverine is not in it.

And then we kill him!

But there are so many of him everywhere. How do we kill them all?

I would be expecting a cameo by him in the film but, as far as I know, we are being spared.
