Gandalf had to be heroic tier!
Otherwise he would have teleported the fellowship into Mordor. "Plop" goes the ring, and "normality restored" as the heart of gold says.
He could have 'Summoned Greater Eagle' and dropped it in the volcano.

Or he just didn't have any teleport spells.

When MM3 came out there was a big change to most of the monsters. They hit harder and have a bit less HP/defenses. If your using monsters straight from MM1 and 2 your fights will likely be longer and not much trouble. Most of them have been updated in the DDI compendium. I recommended checking the compendium for the newest stats or using the MM3 and the adventures vault for your beasties.

I am sure you meant Monster Vault. I've noticed that as I go through planning my encounters. Everything does close to double the damage it used to. A lot of the updated versions of monsters though don't have fewer hit points. Or if they have less it is through a reduction in Con, so only minimally. My players are going to be very upset to know I've got the updated monsters working for me.
Even with the monster updates, the fights can still drag out. Especially when you throw elites and solos into the mix.

The MM3 set the new standards for role damage and hit points.

I put my group against a room full of controllers. I believe they're meant to be the squishiest of the enemies. The battle took just as long as if it were soldiers.
I'm going to try halving HP in my next battle to see how that goes.

Controllers slow down fights, try it again with all artillery

I was correcting the part where he recommended the Adventurer's Vault for selecting monsters.

I see, I was confused there, that's why I always try to use quotes wherever possible.
