I just noticed that as you watch the opening credits, you get the story of Robert's Rebellion: The brass bands that circle the sun in the model of Westeros have carvings on them:

The first one shows the Dragon (The Targaryens, Viserys and Dany's House) triumphant over a burning Kingdom. This signifies the Targaryen clan coming to Westeros and unifying it by conquest.

The next one shows the Dragon fighting a Wolf (The Starks, Ned and Catelyn's House), a Lion (The Lannisters, Jaime and Cersei's House), and a Stag (Baratheon, King Robert and his brothers' House). This obviously signifies Robert's Rebellion.

And the final ring shows all the Wolf, Lion and other animals (Representing the various lesser houses) all bowing before the Stag, signifying Robert becoming King.

I love the credits, they're so well done, I could watch them over and over again.

Mind = blown.  I hadn't even noticed that.  The only problem I see with what you described is the Lion never fought the Dragon until Robert was actively marching on King's Landing.  Only when the battle was truly lost did Jaime shank the king... Oh well that's still a really amazing amount of detail...

Very recently watched the entire first season over the course of about 5 days, which of course inspired this:

I can't wait, but unfortunately I work Sunday nights so will have to wait til' Monday morning to catch the premiere.

This is a very good show that is not afraid to show the brutality of the world being explored.  I was initially shocked at how characters were almost casually killed off, but I realize that is a conceit of the storytelling, and the nature of the politics involved.

I have not read the novels, but am interested in checking them out for more background on Westoros and its complex history.

The novels take their time to build the world and its characters. There are many characters but learning to see the world through their respective eyes provides a broad perspective of the reader's own.

The series has been a great adaptation, considering how much they covered in one season. It is indeed brutal and uncompromising, thus feeling much more real.

I am loving this show.  I am lucky enough to have HBO but had to get rid of Starz last year.  Why have it when I have netflix I thought.  Then they decided not to put Spartacus up on Instant view.  So I am missing out there but I would rather have HBO with shows like Game of Thrones.  I haven't read the books but I would love to do so if I had a library near me.

For those of you not watching the second season is really starting to move the peices in place for some big skirmishes.  If you aren't into it for the violence they are picking up the sexual situations as well.  Which for one surprised me because I already thought they were pushing the line in Season One.  Those two elements of the show aside my favorite part of the show is for sure the story.  It is so rich and for me creates believable human characters.

I just finished reading the first book, it really is amazing how well it sticks to the story.

The first season was a fantastic and very faithful adaptation of the first book.

I hear the second season deviates quite a bit from Book 2 though. I don't know why, as I have not seen that season yet.

Well the next season just ended Sunday and like most TV the third season is where the awesome really kicks off.  So good times

The first season seemed pretty awesome all by itself. How was the second? Did it deviate too much from the book?

Again I haven't read the books so I have no comparison.  However the last few TV episodes brought a lot of the fantasy element to the forefront.  Hellfire was demonstrated as well as the Dragons potential.  My favorite part has to be the increasing danger from the Whitewalkers.  I'm a sucker for zombies...looking forward to Jon Snow and the adventures north of the wall.

Just finishing up the first book now, with A Clash of Kings waiting.  I've heard and read that the 2nd season deviates from that book much more than Season One did from A Game of Thrones.  The first book/season were pretty note for note with just a little trimming tightening of story for the sake of television.  Excellent television series so far. 

I did enjoy the emergence of the more fantastical elements toward the end of the season, and was really not expecting that final scene of the final episode of the latest season.  I guess that's why it's called a Song of Fire and Ice.  By the time season three rolls around I will have likely read the3rd  book, so it will be the first time I'll know what's happening on the show ahead of time.  Right now I'm reading the books knowing in advance and looking for the differences.  Good material either way.
