i guess with my suggestion i can only base it off my peers and 90 percent are usally like oooo bleach or dbz or soul eater not says they are not good just everyone and their mothers like it oo and gungrave is another for the list

really that's the issue. In the U.S. you have to search out anime. To some Evangelion is obscure, to other's it's required reading.

True, and even different parts of the US may vary.  I'm in the lower-mid part of Illinois, but a few friends out in California have seen things I'd never heard of at the time because it either never aired in my area or in the case of movies never migrated to this area.  At the same time I remember watching Dragonball and DBZ at ungodly hours of the morning on local channels, but some people I know never even heard of it until it started airing on Cartoon Network.

People used to get on my back about it way back when, but I've always viewed anime as just another medium to tell a story just like comics and live-action TV and movies.  Which is probably also why I don't really have a preferred genre.  If the setting and story sound interesting, I'll give it a try just like I would anything else.

Can we at least agree that these are also conisdered classic/popular anime:

Ghost in the Shell
Patalbor (spelling)
Maccross
Gundam
Sailor Moon
Fist of the Northstar
Death Note
Evangelion
Astroboy
Ninja Scroll

(Curious to see who agrees.)

Bolded those I would consider "popular" in the sense of being well known.

And since you brought it up, I have trouble watching Ghost in the Shell (the series).  The movies I've rather enjoyed, but the series doesn't quite grab me the same way.  I don't think it's bad, I just can't seem to stick with it (although I do let it play in the background on Adult Swim and I try to kinda pay attention).

My opinion is, if its been dubbed its mainstream.

If its on TV in an english speaking country it's SUPER mainstream.

If it is COMPANY dubbed it is mainstreamed. If it is Fan Dubbed...it may not be mainstream.

Uh ... there are a ton of obscure Anime out there that have been dubbed.  So saying that Ninja High School is dubbed surely doesn't make it mainstream.  (There are a lot of movies that I can barely remember now that would fit this too.)

It's a little mainstream, but Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Gurren Lagann for short) is an experience you can't miss out on. Definately watch it in original japanese with subs. It's got all the greats of anime: manly men, big breasted women, mechs beating the crap outta one another, and yelling. Lots and lots of yelling with the characters faces pressed up to the screen. It's also got one of the greatest single catchphrases in all of anime...

"ORE WA DARE DA TO OMOTTE YAGARU?!"

("WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?!")

Here's a small youtube clip of the catchphrase in action with a little bonus.

If you happen to like shoujo anime, check out Ouran High School Host Club for laughs.

I was surprised how much I liked that one.

Oh have I mentioned Tora Dora?  Thats definitely my favourite high school romcom.

I'd add Star Blazers/Space Cruiser Yamato and Speed Racer/Mach Go Go Go to the classic list.  Probably at least Mobile Suit Gundam and "Zeta Gundam" as well.

Some others I didn't see mentioned (apologies if I missed them):

Dirty Pair (the version from the late 80s)
Black Magic M-66
Urusei Yatsura aka Lum
Project A-Ko (just the first one; the sequels weren't as good)

The Girl who Leapt Through Time is a great movie.

Summer Wars is also pretty cool.

Strike Witches!
Season 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpoVvvB15Ro&feature=list_related&playnext=1&list=SL (DUB, Sub available)
Season 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdLr1iK8ZdM (Sub)

A Little Ecchi with a nearly all female cast, but the 'boss' monster on Season 1: episode 12 is sweet.

1944: Alien beings called Neuroi have invaded earth. The only thing that can defeat them are magical girls wearing jet boots and guns.

Just started on Season 2. Got to Love Funimation releasing their stuff online Tongue

Season 2 Ep 1: Ooh. melee air combat. NICE

Presently watching the Mysterious Cities of Gold.  A Spanish tale set in the 1500's dealing with the exploration of South America.  Has some cool rotoscoping segments in it as well.  Created by Haim Saban and Shuki Levi.
