Doctor Who with the 11th Doctor recently started with a #1.  You don't need to know anything about the 48 years of story to get into it.

Secret Six is a great read

Invincible is also good to follow now.

If you want to get into the TV series, Start with either Series one from a few years ago or series 5.  They are the best jumping on points.
Once again prior knowledge is not necessary for either of those seasons.
Series 1 - 4 is available to be streamed on Netflix.

Try Chew or The Goon - both not so far along you can't get caught up easily with a few trades.

That has been the main hurdle to overcome for people I know who have heard that the series is a 'continuation' of the old series.  Many people seem to think that because of that, it will be hard to get into the current show, but I think they've done an amazing job these past few years with the new series to both make it easy for newcomers to pop in as well as satisfy the fans of the old series.

I have not had the opportunity to read the comics recently (last Who comics I've read were Marvel) but I'd love to get my hands on them because some of the stories I've heard about sound very interesting.

Tell them that every #1 is a good starting point in current comics & T.V. except for Series 2  of TV.
