My favorite is Elongated Man, I just like the idea of the happily married detective.
A VERY close 2nd is Jaime Reyes, he was a character I discovered as I got into DC.

All women do. I know from personal experience.

I like the character concept, but I've unfortunately not actually read much with him. I've seen him more on Batman: Brave and the Bold animated than I have in comics (I liked the one with him overcoming the scarab's programming on Oa and his "evil" version on Owlman's world).

Sue was killed by Jean Loring the ex-wife of the Atom who went BuG%$&* crazy trying to get him back by killing family members of the JLA. She thought Ray Palmer would come back to her if there was a perceived threat to her life.

You're right, Slappy. Thank you for the correction.
I got confused; some sort of identity crisis.

I actually have two favorites. One lead me to reading DC and comics as a whole and the other one keeping me reading it.
Number one is Raven. I started reading comic books right after 9/11 after DC put out this collection of comics dealing with what happened. One of the chapters was about Raven helping a little boy deal with the lost of his father. She touched me as being a really cool character and when I did research I started to read the old New Teen Titan's comics and then branched out. Out of all the characters in the DC universe, Raven is the one that has touched me on a personal level. She is a girl dealing with problems that are interesting and that I care about, no matter what the comics are doing to her in the current universe. And besides, Beast Boy is a great boyfriend for her.
Number two is Supergirl. Yeah, the girl had some problems in her long life. She had a rough beginning, and even when she started to come into her own they decided to kill her off and then erase her from the universe. They replaced her with Powergirl, who to this day I can not call Kara Zor-L. When they finally brought her back she suffered for a while under bad writing and bad art until finally getting a chance to shine. The Supergirl Annual #2 had to be one of the best Supergirl stories that I've read in a while... once again because of a love interest with a green skinned kid, although B5 is much smarter than BB. At least Kara is a good role model again, and doing amazing things.
Even though Dark Supergirl is back...

She is? Hmm, I'm intrigued. What's the story on that?

I enjoyed reading this new Supergirl up until they did the Countdown cross over issue. I have the first story in trade (Power). My favorite issue though is the one where she goes to high school. (There's a picture of her getting hit by a car on the cover.)

Yes. I believe it was a story line in... JLA where the they are fighting the Crime Society and she gets zapped by some evil guy and suddenly 'she dies' as she puts it. Dark Supergirl is there, but she works both sides for a while until she sticks with the JLA and helps them save the day. So far in that... she hasn't reverted back which is strange.
@ Blackthunder: Oh, I liked it. Then I read Kandor and hated how it was all... jumbled. I don't even know if that happened or not. For a while I stopped reading Supergirl up too... just around the time the trade for 'Who is Superwoman' came out. That was solid. I love the art and the way it was written. Its only too bad the team left. I just hope they don't destroy all the good that has happened.

I was rethinking the question and I am torn between two, Vril Dox aka Brainiac 2, and Kamandi. Both from different sides of the DCU but both of them I realy dig. But I think that Vril is a much deeper character even if he is a prick.

Vril and Kamandi are definitely more obscure picks for favorite character but good choices. I like Kamandi as well.

Well though Vril is obscure, I like his postion in the DCU. He's got ties from the past to the future, he's a good guy who doesn't act like one, and not having to pop claws or be a loner but having a cadre of help though most of it's not happy to be working with him. Also with Kamandi, he's a child of Kirby, and Planet of the Apes, really can't go wrong there.

True on both counts. I am glad to see someone get mentioned that isn't one of the obvious choices. Good call.
