2. Legally tying yourself to another person makes everything more real.

I understand your point but I don't agree with that. Being legally married doesn't make me more committed, only more obligated. Commitment and Obligation are not the same thing.

I want to stay with a person because I feel love and commitment toward them, not because it would be difficult to leave due to both our names being on the mortgage.

Being a divorced man, I whole heartedly agree with this statement.

Yeah, I agree. Marriage isn't just sharing stuff. Its becoming one. At least that's the definition I put on it. Of course, my wife and I were already one well before we got married. We got married because of the definitions 3rd parties put on the whole thing; tax deductions, awesome gifts, excuse to throw a party, my landlord not wondering why we have different last names yet a 2 year old son.

I got married because of what other people think and do because of that stupid piece of paper changes something in them. I was married well before I actually had a ceremony. Its all about what it means to you.

If I were a famous woman who was sought after because of her beauty over most anything else by most people I'd do it without a man too.

That is an interesting point on celebrities. I suspect it might be hard to develop real trust with a person when you live in a lifestyle where superficial beauty and fame means so much.

I mean, geez, I just started a thread on ranking celebrity females based largely on appearance. Sure, I'd like to meet one of the women on the list. But how hard would it be for her to ever know for sure I loved her truly for her and not what she has and represents?

I don't think being a celebrity has to be a deciding or even negative factor for them, just speculating that it has its own level of impact.

if a woman acts likes she has a crush on me it's sure not for my money.  Grin

It's interesting that we're on page 2 of this conversation and no one has brought up that to some people marriage is a religious event and not a political one.  It's been said above that marriage is becoming one but you and your spouse were one before being married anyway.  Many people view marriage as an act where God merges you two.

Just throwing that out there.

Well, I stated in this post that I suspect the opposition over unwed pregnancies often comes from a religious standpoint.

I alluded to it with the comment about my landlord having questions about me having a kid and "just some girl" living with me, and church is just another of those 3rd parties that have an agenda when it comes to marriage.

It's not fair to say "the church" because it's also "the synagogue" and "the mosque" and "the temple" as well.  Religions (all) view marriage much differently than the state does.

The way I see it, it falls in these catagories:

1. Religious event
2. state filing status event
3. personal event
4. definition for living arrangement
5. nothing
