The Shadow War

Chapter 43
The Temple of Dalophor

You all stand over the open grave of Abraham Foster. The rope hangs still over seemingly bottomless darkness.

Bedlor and the others await Faerun's lead.

"Whoever feels surest of their climbing ability should climb down first. That person should secure the base of the ladder to keep it from swinging as we climb. To avoid accidents, we should climb the ladder separately."

"Perhaps the Everburning Torch or a sunrod could be attached halfway down the ladder to provide illumination at the point for climbing."

"...now that I think of it, Bedlor and T'Ning should be the first ones to climb down as they have the means to operate in the darkness, and T'Ning can illuminate the lower section of the ladder with his star."

"Okay. Wish me luck!"

With a grin at Rachel and attempting not to show any of the nervousness I feel, I make my way carefully down the ladder.

"Aye, good luck, mate. I'll be right behind ye when ye 'it bottom."

Bedlor holds the rope for extra stability.

"For those who do not feel confident in their climbing abilities, or wish to completely bypass the ladder, I have the material components ready to cast Spider Climb on them."

{Make that DC a 5 for being a ladder. Make a Climb check and don't roll a 1!}

T'ning, you quickly and easily descend the rope ladder. Halfway down, you are able to pause long enough to secure the everburning torch, as Faerun suggested.

Your feet touch bottom, sinking slightly into the thick mud that covers this part of the cavern floor. Your lowlight vision allows you to just see the edge of the lake south of you.

All seems good.

I take out another star and wave it around by way of signal for the rest of the group to follow. Then I put it away again and hold the bottom of the ladder in place for the next person to descend.

"Bedlor, I forgot to tell T'Ning this. If you meet trouble down there before everyone gets down, blow your whistle."

Faerun looks at the others.

"Hmm...I need to look in to getting more whistles for the rest of you. They are highly useful for long distance warnings and to find each other in darkness."

"Speaking of darkness, We might need to pick up the shaped masks from the Armory and drop off the extra masks to be shaped. Being able to see through darkness may likely be essential down there."

Cloud pulls a signal whistle from beneath the neckline of her cloak and Dalen nods as he replies.

"Yes, they are very useful over distances. We always carry ours."

"Ayre. I'll be tellin' 'im, an' I got mine too."

Bedlor grasps the whistle around his neck

"Just be watchin' me other stuff, mates."

Bedlor looks down the hole, waiting for T'Ning to reach the bottom or signal to him.

Faerun looks down.
"I think he made down all the way."
