Dear Marvel.

Please stop forcing OtherBucky on me.

I`m not interested in her. I`m not into her. Yet you keep bringing her around. Please stop.
People tried this in college with real girls, too. They didn`t win me over, either.

I have serious reasons why I don`t like OtherBucky.

1. OtherBucky`s history is freakishly convoluted, and I can`t identify with her because of it. She`s from the Heroes Reborn world, was once a sidekick to Cap, not that he brings it up. She got left behind, and then it became Planet Doom, and she was on a team of cool new heroes, and that actually was cool. But then she left all that and came here to be a homeless teenager fighting in the sewers. And she was part of the Onslaught Reborn thing, but I already said convoluted once.

2. OtherBucky seems to be fighting the best fit in the 616. Seriously, you want to be Bucky, but you`re not part of the Avengers, Young Avengers, or any Avenger or Captain America related product. That`s like Robin choosing a life with the Doom Patrol.

3. OtherBucky has no direction. What does this character stand for? OtherBucky is not a patriotic Bucky. I`ve read everything but the miniseries, and I still can`t tell you what this character stands for. The only recurring theme is `I left my planet, and don`t fit in this one.` Yes, that`s because it was flooded and ravaged and Doom was in control. Coming here must be such a drag.

4. OtherBucky is boring. Not funny. Not angry. No drama. Not anything. Just sort of fights, and talks about she doesn`t fit in. There`s been no supporting cast because no one wants to hang with OtherBucky. Hang on, I`ll get to Arana in a minute.

5. OtherBucky is now hanging out with OtherSpidergirl. I also didn`t get into OtherSpidergirl because I wasn`t really even reading Spider-Man until Fraction took over. So back to my point, two wrongs don`t make a right.

6. I feel jaded towards such a crappy character, when there are so many great characters out there that need more face time. And, just focusing on the female characters: She-Hulk (Law version) was awesome. The girls in Runaways are totally enjoyable to read. Shanna (Reboot version) was awesome. Marvel Divas was a guilty pleasure to read. I think of those series, and then look at OtherBucky, and I start to convulse.

7. Hey, thanks for having a current storyline where you get locked in a basement by a creepy guy that wants to keep you down there as his property. Next to the corpse of the last girl who died. If someone asked me, `Hey whatcha reading?` I`d be embarrassed to show that issue. Maybe I`d rip the pages out first, then hand over the issue.

8. As for the Young Allies series... I`m a big Gravity and Firestar fan. But that`s like putting 5.1 surround on your black and white set. I don`t see this lasting. I wish they`d make Marvel Divas a regular series instead. Don`t quote me in public on that.

In conclusion, OtherBucky is just another Jubilee. Perhaps if they drown her in fifteen other characters,  maybe the blandness will go away.

I like Jubilee and OtherBucky/Nomad and I resent that remark. Tongue

I am not happy that Captain America went from being the story of Steve Rogers to the comic about BuckyCap and OtherBucky. What title do I even buy now, Secret Avengers? pheh

I often do.  Cry

No, seriously, what books now feature Steve? I know there's the Super-Soldier series but that's just a limited, I believe. Is he only in Secret Avengers on a regular basis?

Steve is the new Nick Fury, so he'll be appearing in about half the comic available from Marvel. Also, Brubaker's Cap was never really the story of Steve Rogers, it's always been about Bucky.

It is true that Brubaker has been writing the story of James Barnes, and doing a great job at it. Even so, if you don't like OtherBucky it must be annoying seeing her stuck at the back of every issue. She isn't even tied in with BuckyCap so it's an add-on I could do without.

Based on issue #1, he's a big part of Secret Avengers (so far).

Yes, I take it that he is their leader and will be there consistently. I don't know that I care much for the lineup or premise though. Having Steve go the undercover mission route seems a bit off somehow.

The current plot line in Secret Avengers seems kind of interesting though. At least, enough that I want to know what is going on.

Steve also made an appearance in the last Captain America (#606) so there was that. SuperAlbino might be right in that we might be seeing Steve almost everywhere.

But it isn't his ubiquitousness that I am seeking. I just want to see the character done right and not written into something he's not. Having him as "the new Nick Fury" isn't gelling with me so far but it has good potential so we'll see where it goes.

On topic, the OtherBucky story at the end of this last Captain America was better than what they have given us so far, imo.

I disagree strongly with that statement, Nav. Steve Rogers is suppose to be the True American Hero, he's the GI Joe of the MU and him being the "New Nick Fury" matches that perfectly. Nick Fury was nothing but a really badass solider/spy. Steve is all that and more, which makes him a better leader IMO.

It's the subversive element that feels off to me. Steve always struck me as a front-line soldier, not a spy like Black Widow, Nick Fury, Sharon Carter, or any of the other dozen spies with whom he was friends.

I suppose you're right but Steve did tend to do a lot of spying in the war and in Brubaker's Cap series. But it seems pretty minor to me when you're still going to see Steve doing what he does best, punching bad guys in the face. I mean he kicks a guy in the face within the first 6 pages of Secret Avengers. Of course, Steve isn't my favorite hero so it probably means more to you.

That's true. I'm sure I'm more sensitive about the whole thing.

It's probably just a matter of transition for me. It's like when your father has been had one job for as long as you can remember and then switches to a different, but somewhat similar, job.

I guess I've missed Steve's presence during the time he was "dead" and I didn't like the way they gave us the Captain America Reborn mini (which was messed up in the publication time of the main series). It was like he couldn't even fit in his own book, though I understand it was done more from a marketing angle.

And now he doesn't have the uniform, the shield, the job, and leads a team of Avengers that have to do everything "secretly". (shrugs) Eh, I'll adapt. I'll keep reading and see where it goes.

I don't like the new Nomad/OtherBucky either.  Well put post.

It actually makes me like my Cap solo title less.
