It has been discussed some on the main site but, as an ongoing series, deserves a thread.

Opinions on Issue #1?

It seems an odd line-up to me. I can't seem to get Beast in my head as an Avenger even though he was for a long time.

And any Avengers team without some of the classic members feels wrong. Steve (not as Cap), Ant-Man, and Black Widow don't offset my feeling a bit adrift without Iron Man or Thor or Scarlet Witch or someone like that.

I guess I am set in my ways.

I can accept the team as it is with the members, and I really like the Irredeemable Ant-Man. I think I was the only person to buy that Kirkman run.

The ish was good but I don't think I'll pick up the second one. I think I have Avenger's burnout.

What bothers me is that Bendis has 2 Avenger books and Brubaker has one.  I wish Avengers #1 was as good as Secret Avengers #1.

@Navarre: I like the team makeup of Secret Avengers. It the team makeup of Avengers that bothers me.  You'd think Bendis could have put Ms. Marvel or Stature in the book to make the team feel less of a sausage party.

Is the roster of that team Captain America, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Thor, and Wolverine?

Don't forget Mystery Character X who is also a "he".  Too Many Males for my tastes. Only reason I'm sticking around is because Next Avengers and Spider-Girl will be in it.

I wish she was in Secret Avengers instead of Valkyrie. Carol and Steve could have some good tension.

Well, I'm going to go ahead and say I liked it, far more than Avengers #1, in fact, Marvel should just give the entire Avengers line over to Brubaker and Fraction, then I'd be one happy geek. Also, you goons keep Ms. Marvel away from this book, Valkyrie hasn't gotten this much screen time since the last time she was in The Defenders.

That's because Carol Danvers is a better character than Valkyrie.   Wink

Not to my eye.  Carol Danvers has become little more than Hal Jordan in a unitard the last couple of years.  The Valkyrie, on the other hand, can be utilized as awesomely as Thor and has years of actual history in the Marvel Universe, rather than the extensive retconning that has created Carol's place.  Her original series was a good one, but the last few years have made Carol much more strident and unpleasant than I'm comfortable with...

Secret Avengers has been far better than "New".  I too would have preferred someone to replace Valkerie, but not Ms. Marvel.  She's too public of a figure.  I would have liked to have seen Cloak and Dagger inlcuded.

Do you know what I think the problem is? Marvel can't come up with an original name for a group of superheroes, or they're afraid to. I love this team as a Black Ops division... I mean, well, it still does seem like they're bringing little known characters to the light just so they're not totally irrelevant and if any of them are popular enough they can start their own titles...

It's just annoying that now any group of superheroes are automatically tagged as some kind of avengers(unless there are some villains in it. Then they're the Thunderbolts). I mean... the Secret Avengers could just have easily been called Strikeforce, or SHIELD Division 17B - okay, those are lame names, so not THOSE names, but you get my point? They shouldn't call all groups of heroes avengers!

So many characters are affiliated with certain teams that there seems to be an automatic mental connection between the two. I think the name was chosen because it is led by Steve Rogers and most people could only think of him leading the Avengers.

But if he isn't going to be Captain America, wear the costume, wield the shield, or even run his team publicly then why would it matter? Find a new name.

I agree... SHIELD Division 17B gets my vote!  Cheesy
