I have read everything except the Eoin Colfer book, including "Young Zaphod" and the fragment from Salmon of Doubt. I have the Ultimate Edition of the book which includes all five novels and the short story. However, I found "Young Zaphod" quite forgettable.

Same as campaigner, and honestly (hopefully this won't come off wrong) but outside of bits from Thanks for all the Fish, the last two and "Young Zaphod" didn't really need to happen.

I actually liked Mostly Harmless. I read it twice in the last year for my studies, I guess when you have to read something often, you just get to like it more.

What I found quite dragging, however, was the third book. It is the weakest one IMHO.

I actually like the third one best - the Krikkitmen provided a lot of action and humor. It moved at a much brisker pace than the others and benefited from having an actual plot, IMO. Not that the relatively plotless first two books weren't awesome as all get out.

I just started reading the newest book and it takes up exactly from the anti climatic end of the previous book with an appropriately anti-climatic beginning.

Yay! h2g2 logic!

I have read the entire Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy series.

I have not read anything by Eoin Colfer.

Make of this what you will.

Eh... I'd say everything needs to be experienced before an opinion on its quality can be made...

I get that "purists" would rather not see their original vision of the series tainted, but I have read the book and at the very least I'd say it is worth reading.

I'm hardly a purist, I'm just skeptical of anyone's ability to capture Douglas Adams writing style.  Whichever...

I am a bit of purist on the subject too.  Adams was great at what he did, and he will always be a greater authority on the universe he created than anyone's addition.  If it hadn't been just him for all those years I could more readily accept another author jumping in.  No matter how good the new book is though, it will always just feel like fan fiction to me, just like all the Dune books since Frank Herbert died.
