For Realz!

That was when I had to take ten minutes to stop reading and walk around, rubbing my brow. It took that long for it to register that this author was writing the real deal.

I dunno.  Ned Stark seems like a pretty cool guy.  Eh kills deserters and doesn't afraid of anything.

But in all seriousness, from what I've heard, Ned and his kids (The innocent ones, at least) are the only truly *good* souls in the series.  And maybe his wife but I'm not even sure about her.

I guess I mean I don't get comfortable with any character because they may not be around for long. I love Ned Stark.

SPOILER:
Not for long.... heh.

Honestly, with a few exceptions, most of the POV characters seem to remain safe. It's more likely the non-POV characters are the ones going down.

Also:

George dropped some hints about what would be in ADWD on his Not A Blog

I am loving the books and need to go out and buy the third, the way he just effortlessly without any need for unnecessary build up kills off people and makes you want to stop reading the books but no matter what he stills draws you in. I am hooked and love the HBO series for its faith to the books and incredible acting.

Tyrion and Arya are my favorite characters.

Finished A Dance With Dragons a couple weeks ago. The casual way George kills off major characters had me ready to drop the series several times mid book. Also the way he takes interesting characters and then crushes them a bit and has chapters of nothing much happening to them brakes me out every now and then but by and large he is an amazing writer. I find myself guessing at who prophecies are referring to a lot. One of the things that keeps me from dropping the book and cursing G.R.R.Martin is the appendix where characters that are dead have a bracket around their name and those who don't are at least still animate (debating whether that is a good thing for at least a few characters).

Also on the show I love the casting choice for Tyrion Lannister.

Tyrion on the HBO series is perfect. All of the actors do a great job.

I especially like Tyrion and Arya on the series. But, as I said, they are my favorite characters so that probably explains it.

Sometimes Sansa comes across on the show as a little too bratty and whiny instead of the properly-mannered lady she is written to be. But I think Sophie Turner makes a great looking Sansa.

I know i'm super late but Im halfway through A Storm of Swords and I think im done with this series.
spoilers

The Red Wedding was the final straw for me. He gives us these awesome characters to fall in love with and then well, he kills them. I hated the Red Wedding. Hated it. I think Martin hates the Stark family. He has to. ugh

If you were reading a novel of a family line, including yours, everyone you could know will be born, live, and die within the course of the story. The novel isn't about the Starks but about history.

It is a very realistic portrayal of life, which bears as much brutality and death as it does joy and life.

I agree, but it's seems as if the author is torturing his audience by constantly killing off(in gruesome ways)fan favorites. I decided to keep reading mainly because I want to see The Freys get their comeuppance and I have invested time and money into this series.

SPOILERS

After Ned Stark(who is my favorite character)and now Robb, im not sure who the villains and heroes are anymore. But maybe thats the point eh?

I think it is the point, yeah. We are accustomed to books and movies where either the protagonist achieves some victory (usually at great cost) or perhaps even the protagonist fails yet wins ("Rocky").

But in life everyone has the chance to win or lose in varying degrees. We don't know what the world will hold or how one action can bring about later consequence.

Sometimes we will be happy with the direction of the world and sometimes we won't. Sometimes we rage at the "higher power".

This series is like that as well. GRRM is the "higher power" and we experience the world as it happens with no promises.

So, for pure escapism it can indeed be very frustrating, even angering. But, for realism, it can't be beaten.
