Has anyone every read George R. R. Martin's series? I definitely enjoyed the first book although I'd have to say it is one of the most brutal and mirthless books I have ever read.

It would make for a great tv series. The Lannisters alone would make for some fun viewing.

I'm just starting "A Storm of Swords" and am completely addicted. HBO is making it into a TV series, and I am looking forward to it with a little bit of apprehension, but I think with GRRM behind the process it will be pretty good. It's funny, this is one of the first times I've ever changed what I imagine the characters look like in my head based on the casting of the show!

I could do without all the sports talk inbetween, but hey, it's his blog! Hopefully book 5 should be out soon...

I've gotten into these over the summer. Devoured all four over the course of five weeks. I can't get enough of this story, or of George's writing style. His blog seems to be suggesting that A Dance With Dragons will be released within the next few months. He's stated that he only has four points of view left to write, as well as the Prologue and Epilogue. I'm also extremely pumped for HBO's series. It's set to come out in 2011. Sean Benn is playing Eddard, which is an interesting choice...

But then again, A Dance with Dragons always seems to be a few chapters short of completion. I particularly enjoy the page at the end of the 4th book when Dragons is advertised as being up for release in 2006.
Very much looking forward to the TV series, though. I'm interested to see how they'll shuffle events around etc.

George R. R. Martin has given me back my faith in epic fantasy. When a major character is killed off in the first book and kids are being flung out of windows? EPIC.

Indeed!
Both of those events caught me totally off-guard. I mean, who does that?!??
... George R. R. Martin, that's who!

EXACTLY. A fantasy epic that is actually as gritty as the setting deserves? Made of win!
