I'm not sure why Joss would choose to have him make a statement like that, besides pandering to the Right wing
No. It's what sab said.
It's just that. There's
no
agenda!
Steve would likely be Christian for his time-period. And, even if he wasn't, there was no agenda from Joss. It's just an element of Steve's character, perfectly played.

Because it's in-character, makes perfect sense in context, and is also hilarious. Which is basically the hallmark of any Whedonism in any of his shows, now that I think about it.
Well, I haven't seen it, so I, of course, don't know the full context of the line we are discussing. But, as an atheist and border-line anti-theist, I cannot wait to find out
And, in-character? I've read plenty of Captain America and don't recall him announcing his religious background on-panel. I've seen him draw from time to time, but not go to church. I understand this ain't the comics-verse, but I would love to understand the reasoning for such an inclusion.

lol
That was a joke, dude. I don't see agendas where there are none, I was merely playing off of the idea of Joss having his own atheist agenda.
Steve
would
likely be a Christian, as would every other person in the movie, except maybe Bruce Banner (he IS a scientist) and Thor (he's prolly an atheist
), because they all simply live on the planet Earth and Christianity is the most practiced religion.
If we are talking about Cap being a religious person, I don't know the line from the movie, so its hard for me to comment, but I do not recall ANY reference to Captain America being a religious person.
As an element of Cap's personality that is nothing but a sign of his being from another era this sounds like what you guys are making it out to be: nothing but an innocent reference. And, this section of the boards is already a recent victim of undo censorship; we should prolly change the topic off of religion...well, religion that isn't Pandia and World Spirit that is

Yeah, Heaven forbid we offend anyone's tender sensibilities any more than we already have.
Wait...Can I use the word "Heaven" in that statement?

I highly doubt Stark has any religion at all. And Romanoff is a former Soviet, right? My understanding was that the Soviet Union was officially atheist. Don't know enough about Barton's character to guess, other than... how many Christian assassins do you know? And I don't think you are really allowed to have a religion when you
are
a god...
It's not played so much that Cap is an overtly religious person, more that he was raised in an environment where Christianity, just like patriotism and "honor" and all the other things that Cap holds so dear, were all part of What Good People Do. For him to buy so utterly into the kind of morality he does - that going to fight for your country in a time of war is the only honorable course, etc - but yet reject the religion practiced by everyone around him, would be weird. So he takes the existence of the Christian God for granted in the same way he takes the other parts of his moral code for granted. He's not being pushy about it, it's just there in the background of who he is. And I think it works really well in context.

This is a brilliant explanation! TYVM Sab. You always pull through on that sort of stuff.
This makes me think of the end of the Marvel Civil War comic run when a reporter was interviewing Steve just before he was shot, and asked him if he had a Facebook account or if he knew what Facebook even WAS, suggesting that Steve was out-of-touch, in a very nice way.
This seems to do the same in a different yet similar way of showing Cap as being part of a different era. I can't f&^cking wait to see this damned movie!!

You won't be disappointed.
And, yes, sab has a truly gifted way of explaining something, imo. I respect that...except when he disagrees with me of course.

Don't get me wrong, he still annoys me sometimes. If I were interacting with him in real life he'd probably drive me nuts. I think perhaps he works better as a character for me when he's part of a team with characters who are strong enough in their own right to stand up to him and force him to be a little less rigid about the idea that there's only one right thing to do in any given circumstance. But that seems true of all of the Avengers to me - the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Up til now Iron Man was my favorite based on the standalone movies, but now I can't pick a favorite at all; all the standalone movies just feel kind of shallow by comparison.

Agreed again. And that is what makes The Avengers (the team, not just the movie) so great. They provide balance and context to each other to do something together they wouldn't likely successfully accomplish on their own.
Look at the stark (no pun intended) difference between how Tony approached a conflict in the same scene where Steve mentions God versus how Steve approaches it. Yet that same approach from Stark later propels Steve to not allow himself to accept orders at face value and look into things on his own. It's amazing.
And dammit, Gaumer, hurry up and see this thing so I can stop trying to be obscure!

Chapter 72 is closed.
Chrysalis, sorry if I ended Liv's scene prematurely. I didn't see you around and, after me being out all weekend, I felt I should get everyone leveled up. Liv can still talk to Nephros as soon as we resume the game if she wants.
Lutharian, please level up T'Ning's character sheet using the online sheet provided to you. Let me know if you need help.
Maybe sab could help you too, if you'd like and he's available. He's been invested in this character for a minute now.

I'd probably have to give Lutharian permission to edit it; I had it pretty locked down to only me. Unless you made a clone for him.
Lutharian, PM me your gmail address so I can add you to the people allowed to edit. I automated a lot of the leveling up process because it's my least favorite part of DnD, so a lot of things will be automatic; I can help you out with the steps you have to do by hand.
