Ok, this is probably best marked explicit.  But I recently procured a copy and TBH I'm both disturbed and confused.  Am I the only person to have read it?

Sorry, I'm not familiar with it. If it's from Alan Moore though I doubt it's full of mirth and joy.

It's worth aquiring for the shock factor.  Or getting on the downlaod as its very very very hard to pick up so im led to belive.

Does it hold up well on the merits of its own story, disregarding the controversial subject matter?

It's well written in places, It's almost like LOEG but with more boobs.
The last volume is a bit disturbing in places.  the art is often serial.

To answer your question I don't think the story does hold up.  It's just a bit wrong.

(nods)

If the book has good characters and a well-crafted story then I can often look beyond the shock effect. The effect itself must in fact lend something to the story or else why include it besides an attempt to (supposedly) make a statement or just to sell books?

Well it being Moore, I think he's more concerned with the book then the pounds, shillings and pence.
I don't really know what to make of it.  The premise is interesting in that 3 woman moves in a universe obvioulsy greatly modelled on the LOEG universe and that their storys are parallelled with the names of there fairy tale conterparts.

I'd recommend it as an experience rather then a good read.  But be aware that even Moore calls it porn and it deals with some difficult themes.

Lost Girls was intentionally designed, I think, with pornography in mind.  There are many overt and subtle references to Victorian pornography, as well as to the standard current fetishy crap that the intarwebs have created...

That said, it's a dark and interesting work, dealing as it does with sexual awakenings on the eve of World War I.  The fact that the main characters are reflections of characters associated with children's literature caused most of the consternation, I believe.

I will go on the record as saying that I read it, I liked it, and parts of it were even emotionally moving in ways that I didn't expect (Dorothy's disappointment upon her return from the magical land for one) and I really liked the counterpoints that the three main characters provided.

Alice, with her predatory wiles and jaded ways.
Wendy, with her quiet repression hiding some pretty shocking things.
Dorothy, seemingly a hayseed, but possibly the most knowledgable of them all.

Sure, it's pornography, but it's good pornography, and I liked it a lot.

i liked it a lot. not because of the pornography, but because of the writing. i feel like moore tried to push the envelope a little too much in the last volume, but it is an iteresting work.

I've heard that it was basically Moore's shot at comic porn. He says it's porn in interviews, and expounds on it further by asking "why can't porn be important and thought provoking?"
