So I'm sure that by now you've all heard the news:

 http://movies.ign.com/articles/106/1060055p1.html

So what now? Thoughts on who should be the next Peter Parker or the new director? Who should be the next villain? Is this a train wreck waiting to happen for the spider-man movie franchise?

This kicks ass, I think.

I always thought they should have taken Spidey from earlier than a senior in high school.

I'm no good at picking actors and directors and such, I'll leave that to others. It sucks Raimi is off the flick and I liked the idea of John Malkovitch as the Vulture. Afterall, Malkovitch Malkovitch Malkovitch Malkovitch. IT'S MY HEAD!!!!

First villain: We should start back with Osbourne/Green Goblin, but if I have to pick a new villain/s I'll go with Electro, maybe Rhino.

Kraven and Lizard would be cool, but I can't see them telling good stories with those characters until they give them or Spidey some background. Doc Connors intro'ed; and SPidey badass enough to get on the hunter's radar.

I'm stoked about Spidey now tho...as long as there are no emo dance numbers Smiley

Dreams do come true. Now if God could only get around to fixing the regular continuity...  Wink

Truth is this moderately good.  We do get a fresh start, but the price was the loss of a good director. We don't know if this new guy will know the franchise well enough or fight for it when the suits try to make changes that stink. We don't even know what the script is going to be.  Are we redoing the origin? Will we get web-shooters? Will the tone of the movie be directed more towards a teen audience?  Lots of unanswered questions.

What I'll hope for is an actor we can see grow like, for instance, in the Harry Potter movies.  Gwen should be in the movie from the start.  As much as I dislike the Saint, she's an important part of his life.  Norman should be there, but shouldn't be the villain yet. We should have a mob boss (Kingpin?, Tombstone?, Silvermane?) hire a merc or something for the beginning.  Electro is good, but I think Shocker fits better.  Rhino would be good too.  Also, we should play out the whole "Capt. Stacy getting hurt in a Spider-Man fight" for the first movie.  I'd also like for Sony to let this be a part of Marvel movie continuity, but that might be too much.

If I had my way, I'd plan a trilogy. First movie, we get Shocker and the start of the Gwen romance. Second, the romance grows and we get either Doc Ock or The Lizard for the villain. Third Movie, Green Goblin and Gwen's death.  What do you think?

I think this will ruin the Spider-man franchise much like the last Superman movie did.  The problem isn't the reboot but how soon the reboot is happening.  The Spider-man movie came out in 2002 and the last movie came out in in 2007.  That means there has been 3 Spider-man movies in the last decade and now they are going to throw all that out and start over.  The only way for them to really draw on a new group of kids to watch this movie is to make it a G rated movie.  Who wants to see that?

I was one of those people that were waiting in line to see the midnight showing in 2002.  But, I will not be for this reboot.  Stop retelling origins and lets get into some stories.  So, the last movie wasn't as great as everyone hoped for.  That just means they need to spend more time on a script for the next movie not reboot the series.  This feels like a cash grab by Sony b/c the first movie made them so much money.

If they are going back to Parker's high school days they will most likely tell an origin story. Most of all I don't want to have to sit through the origin again. But they will probably have to because, while Parker's origin is the same, they will be changing a lot of other things around him and will re-familiarize us with those.

My biggest fear is that they are going back to the high school era, not to build in longevity for the characters and tell the story right, but to hit the younger demographic that can't get enough of Twilight, the Vampire Diaries, and other such dramas. Parker is the poster boy for teen angst, mooning over some girl, and all that stuff.

But I have no idea what they are going to do with the movie so I see no reason to not give them the benefit of the doubt.

If they do this, I think Michael Cera would be a pretty good Peter Parker. I mean, I think of Pete whenever I see the kid. Malkovitch would be a pretty good JJ in my opinion. And how about Gerard Butler as Kraven, that could work really well. This is a good idea if done well, the trick is doing it well.

Another article from IGN and is pretty much spot-on with all the recommendations that they give on where the new Spider-Man should go.

The comments about not making Spider-Man too gritty are true. Spider-Man has his burdens but the costume persona is liberating in many ways for Peter. It is almost a flip side of the Hulk.

A smart movie will illustrate that balance and even explore the nuances of Peter's psyche that makes it so. If I need more grit in my heroes I know Batman and the Punisher are around somewhere.

I would be on board if they didn't go back to the origin.  And I would agree that going to dark and gritty would not be a good idea.

Instead of calling it a reboot why don't they just say this is a story that takes place during some of the time lapses in the first movie.  For instance, it took place between Peter getting his powers and before Norman became a human pin cushion.

Maybe my initial problem with this is the use of the word "reboot".  When I hear "reboot" I think of starting something over from the beginning.  What do you think of when you hear "reboot"?

I think of the same thing you do.

There is no reason at all to redo the origin story. Regardless of what time frame the movie takes place in, skip the origin and tell a story appropriate for that time period.

What's telling the origin story really take though? 20 minutes?

This is a reboot, we have to boot anew. That means telling an origin story. The character changing into the hero from toal loser and learning his powers is fun to watch.

If they are going back to high school and don't retell the origin story, that's where I can see some confusion occurring.

But, it could awesomely work either way and marketing will be the key. If they make sure that people know (and we do and arent we the ones that really matter) it will not matter in any way where they tell the story, as long as its a good story.

Really, the first movie spent 1-1.5 hours on Peter getting bit, wrestling for money, losing Uncle Ben, and discovering his powers.  That was a majority of the movie.  I liked that movie, but I already own it I don't need to see it with a different actor.

And you say that we aren't the ones that really matter and I will agree with that.  But, since the last movie came out 3 years ago and the major demographic is early teens; then (providing the movie is released before 2014) they will still be under 20 and most likely still in high school.  My point is that with a "reboot" movie coming out so soon after the last movie there won't be a new generation to have to catch up.

And did you notice I didn't even bring up all the kids that are/will be watching the tons of Spider-man cartoon series that are currently running.

They should treat his origin like Batman Begins treated Batman's. Showcase is in the first half hour than use it to build on the entire movie.

It would be better if they did it all within the opening credits and then we got right into the movie.
