Ok, so I made the post about Comic Book Music, so now let's reverse it. How do you guys feel about music in comic books? Like used as flavor? Can it work? What are some comics that used music or lyrics that you found worked well, and what are some that didn't?

I really liked the use of the song "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor in the Oasis arc of Sluggy Freelance. I felt the way Pete Abrams put it into the story really stuck home the sadness and darkness that plagued Torg, Zoe and Oasis' love triangle.

On the other hand, while I love Grant Morrison, whenever he referenced music in the Invisibles, it just left me uninterested. It felt fanboyish and forced, rather than integral to the story.

What does everyone else think?

Musical rythems can be replicated in comics.

check the cash bio comic by Reinhard Kleist. He has some cash songs translated to comics. very nice.

I also own a comic (Jessica Blandy issue 9 and 10, by Renaud and Dufaux)* where in the story they explicitly state what songs are on the radio.
So you could make a playlist of these songs and read the comic along with the right music in the background.

Haven't done that yet but I am tempted to do so some day.

* I'm not sure if that comic exists in the english language.

I don't have much to include

The last limited for Hellstrom: Son of Satan, a Marvel title, used different ringtones on Hellstrom's phone for effect. Rolling Stones-Sympathy for the Devil; Charlie Daniels-Devil Went Down to Georgia, etc. when his dad would call him. It was remember-able for me.

Dark X-Men had a nice deally where the writer used one artist's songs to describe characters in their intros every issue. It too was nice if you got the references but fun to research them and maybe find some new music.
