Author Topic: Comic book characters as friends (or more)  (Read 1678 times)

This is a bit of an odd thread but, consider the source. I tend to write whatever I am thinking. I was thinking about this and, hey look, a thread.

If the comic book universes were real, which characters would you realistically expect (or hope) to be friends with? Or, perhaps, who do you think would make a compatible romantic partner?

I think it is interesting that everyone talks (and talks and talks and...) about Bruce Wayne and Logan but, really, would we want to be close to these two? Bruce is so driven, so dark, that his obsession would almost surely destroy any friendship I tried to have with him. Likewise, Logan is a rather private person who struggles with his demons. He might kick back a brew or even go camping but I think he would be hard to befriend.

Conversely, I think it would be easy to be friends with Steve Rogers. He gets some flack for being such a boy scout but you always know where you stand with him.

I would never fear Steve would betray my trust nor violate the values he expresses. And, even if he seemed a bit stiff sometimes, Steve is the kind of guy who makes you want to be a better person too because he is so easy to respect for who he is.

So my choice for best friend would be Steve Rogers.

As far as romantic relationships go, I'd have to give this one hands down to Kitty Pryde.

She's a spitfire, no doubt. Things wouldn't always be smooth with her.

But she knows herself and stands up for what she thinks. That's never bad. I don't want to date a doormat.

She has some romantic ideals and I'm more reserved in my approach to things. But she isn't swooning every second either and I think there would be balance there.

She is brilliant, funny, sarcastic, and clever.

She's brunette and, oh yeah, that works for me.

In this case I am using the term relationship to refer to something long-term, like a serious girlfriend anyway. If we were talking about a one-night hookup I would go for Jessica Drew or, of course, Illyana Rasputin. .... but it is likely I wouldn't survive the experience with either.

Now I have taken an easy road by choosing a best friend and romantic partner from well-known characters. If nothing else, the more we've seen of a character (despite writer changes) the more we feel we know them.

But feel free to think broadly. If you think your ideal qualities in a best friend are well represented by Rocket Raccoon or your idea of a great partner is Agatha Harkness, more power to ya.

So, just for the heck of discussion, throw some names out here.

Punisher and Witchblade... one of them would be my best buddy and one my spouse. Cheesy

Although with my luck, Punisher would probably rape me...  Sad

That's why he carries the big gun with the sniper scope. Good luck there, buddy!

Seriously, would you want to be friends with the Punisher? If it's sarcasm I get it and it'd be funny to be best friends with a guy who insists on wearing a skull on his chest.

I was sorta hoping for a serious answer. Not onlt might it be interesting but the answers also reflect what sort of traits we look for in a friend and/or lover. I think the comparisons might be interesting.

Like, in the case of Steve Rogers I am effectively saying I am looking for a best friend who is true to his values and loyal. Apparently those are the qualities I expect in my best friend.

In the case of Kitty, I am suggesting I want a partner who is balanced. A woman who is smart, clever, and capable yet passionate, witty, and multi-layered.

... You want a best friend who is a psychotic murderer and a lover with big ta-tas and a weird hand. LOL funny  I'm imagining the group photo at Applebee's. lmao

Me personally, I would be hanging out with my friendly neighbor hood Spider Man. He and I would be two peas in a pod. It would be a lot of fun and a lot of ass kickin.

And my girlfriend super hero would be Patsy Walker “Hellcat”. She’s a sexy read head with a bad ass streak in her. I love that in a woman.   Grin

Yeah, I thought of Parker. He's a really good guy who I also consider loyal and true to his values.

He's a big geek too and I bet he'd enjoy comic books and D&D in his down time.

And if you like redheads, you would be glad to hang around with Mary Jane too. (continuity screw-ups notwithstanding)

Patsy Walker has been around forever but it didn't seem like she'd seen much panel-time since the Defenders until the last year or two. I haven't read enough about her to have an opinion on her character.

But with a name like Hellcat I hope you know what you're getting yourself into.  heh

If you like wicked redheads, why not hook up with the Red Skull's daughter, Sin? That would be an interesting night.  ;-)

Okay, there might have been a wee bit of sarcasm in my post. Yeah, Punisher would probably not make the best of best buddies.  Grin

I think Hank McCoy a.k.a. the Beast might make a good best buddy. He is very intelligent and I appreciate that in a person. Also, he could hold his own in a fight, so he could beat up the gang in that dark alley that is after my wallet.
Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler) and Wally West (The Flash) also seem like cool and funny guys to hang out with.

As far as girlfriends go, Agent 355 seems like a smart and independent woman, that would be nice. Of course, if you only go for hotness, you could pick just about any female superhero... Zatanna would be one of my prime choices then.  Cheesy

Yeah Pete and I would get along great I think. We would be two geeks who somehow get really hot gals to be into us. I would need to control myself around MJ. She's sooo pretty...le sigh.

Oh trust me, I would love to date a woman named Hellcat!! …another le sigh…..

Her resent run was great and a fun read. It was a good break from the entire big event BS that was going on at the time. I recommend it!! Check it!

Campaigner,

I don't know Agent 355 from an online search it looks like she's in Y: The Last Man, right?

So you like smart and independent? Good qualities, if balanced.

Zatanna, huh? I could take a couple of guesses why she came to mind.

Wally West seems like a decent guy. I'm not sure that his comedic intent wouldn't get on my nerves.

Hank McCoy would be a good friend, definitely. Another guy you can count on. And I suspect I would become a lot smarter just by hanging around with him. heh

UglyHooker,

Are you reading the Marvel Divas title? I mean, she's one of the main characters, right?

Now that she is getting even more of a spotlight than usual, are you finding her to be written both consistently and in a way that sustains/improves your love for the character?

Jean Grey is pretty much the First Lady of Redheads in the MU. Do you like her as well? Her personality seems much different from the feisty M.J. and Patsy.

Top friend choices for me beyond Steve Rogers would be Illyana Rasputin, Kitty Pryde, Peter Perker, Dick Grayson, Donna Troy, and Hank McCoy.

Top girlfriend choices besides Kitty would be Illyana or Salu Digby aka Shrinking Violet (though she seems to prefer women).

If we were talking about a one-night encounter then I want go for as wicked as I could get. So that goes back to my assumptions on Jessica Drew and Illyana.

Notice how Illyana seems to appear often in my preferences?

Honestly? The Tick. I mean, you'd get interesting conversation, lots of excitement, and virtually no harm will come to you if disaster does strike. Unless The Tick IS that disaster...

Danni Garrett from Blue Beetle. She is absurdly cute, and she has legal ownership of the Bug for flying around. Being a motormouthed nerd and walking database of superhero information just adds to the attraction factor.

I don't read Blue Beetle so I don't know Danni. She sounds cool.

So are you talking "friend", "friend with benefits", or e-Harmony here?

I would love to have Gar as a friend. He has great humor and could turn into a bear if something was after you or a fly if you wanted to listen to gossip in the next room. lol He would make for a great evening for sure.

Garfield Logan: He's a one-man petting zoo for you.

I kinda like Gar but his incessant banter and wisecracks would get on my nerves...just like I probably do to everyone here.  heh

You may not know this (though you should) but the women in Gar's life haven't exactly had the best luck. ... Be careful what you wish for!
