1  Games and Toys / Play by Post / Re: "Age of the Guardians"-OOC thread on: May 18, 2013, 03:18:24 PM
Thanks guys...

I want to put more thought and structure into the campaign setting; Lore and History DCs, important NPCs, adventure hooks, random monster encounters lists, the works.

My time is a little limited, but I'll try when I can.

Um...hey guys...

I'm REALLY sorry for being gone so long. I honestly can't remember most of the past 3 months; I can't explain what happened on my end, due to the personal nature of my issues, but I've only just recovered about 2 weeks ago.

I was ashamed that I abandoned this game, and you guys, and I'm saddened to realize I missed Navarre's farewell. I really can't describe how sorry I am about my behavior.

I don't know if I have the drive to continue this game; it's been so long since I've gone over the story here; plus, my personal life is still all shot to hell.

I may be on again but, for now, the "Age of the Guardians" PbP is discontinued.
3  Games and Toys / Role Playing Games / D&D 4E Hombrewed Races--Inspired by James Wyatt on: February 12, 2013, 12:21:42 AM
I recently bought the Dungeon Master’s Guide 2 for Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition, and happened upon a segment written by James Wyatt, one of the original designers of the Edition, about how his then-11-year-old son wanted to play a Fire Archon character.

Thing was, Archons are not a playable race in 4th Edition, nor are they fleshed out in any printed Monster Manual to be playable; so how did James fix this? With the flexibility and creativity of good Dungeon Mastering. I won’t retype the article here, but I was nonetheless impressed with how he designed the character around a Rogue class with homebrewed Race features based off the ones found for the Fire Archon in the Monster Manual. So, with inspiration, I thought I’d post my own thoughts on some “homebrewed” PC Races for D&D 4E.

Archon
Born from the Elemental Chaos, these beings are equally tempestuous and immovable.

Racial Traits
Average Height: 5’ 8”-6’ 2”
Average Weight: 175 lbs-220 lb.

Ability Scorce: +2 Constitution, +2 Dexterity or +2 Wisdom
Size: Medium
Speed: Variable
Vision: Normal

Languages: Primordial, Common
Elemental Origin: You are a native of the Elemental Chaos, so you are considered an elemental creature for the purpose of effects related to creature origins.
Elemental Affinity: Choose fire, ice, earth, storm, or water. You are considered this type of Archon for the purpose of speed and element resistance.
Fire-you have Speed 8 squares, and Fire Resistance
Ice-you have Speed 6 squares, Cold Resistance, and can ignore difficult terrain as a result of ice and snow.
Earth-you have Speed 6 squares, Petrification Resistance, and can ignore difficult terrain as a result of sand, grit, and crag.
Storm-you have Speed 8 squares (hover 1), and Lightning and Thunder Resistance.
Water-you have Speed 5 squares (swim 8 ), Resist Acid, and Vulnerable Cold (when you are damage by a cold attack, you are slowed).
Poison Resistance:  You have resist poison 5 + half your level.
Element Resistance: You have resist 5 + half your level against the type of damage affiliated with your elemental affinity.
Disease Immunity: Your corporeal form lacks the physical targets of disease, so you do not suffer any effects when exposed to disease from attacks or environment.

Not all intelligent beings in the chaotic quagmire of the Primordials’ ancient home are evil. Even archons often struggle with other denizens of the Elemental Chaos, particularly the true Elementals and abyssal Demons. Archons, regardless of their type, are militant and disciplined, instincts honed to a razor’s edge to fell their enemies in combat. Most Archons are fearless, for they learned to survive in a world where any weakness results in death. Standing tall above their evil kin, there are some noble archons, however few, who will one day bring a semblance of peace to their ancient birthplace.

Play an archon if you want…

To be a mercurial creature devoid of gender and age.

To be a beacon of hope in the disastrous realm of the Elemental Chaos.

To be a member of a race that favors the fighter, rogue, warlord, wizard, warden, and sorcerer classes.

Special Note Regarding Archons
Archons don’t employ weapons or armor the same way other humanoids do. Rather than iron or steel, archons employ weapons and armor of purely shaped elements made of bronze fire, black ice, or even pure lightning. These weapons and armor can’t be bought, sold, or used by any non-archon. They can be formed by an archon master smith, if given the right payment. Like their wielders, these weapons inflict the same kind of damage as their form originates.

Half-Demon
Scorned by any and every thing, even their own kind, walking the lonely road of solitude.

Racial Traits
Average Height: 5’ 6”-6’ 1”
Average Weight: 150-195 lb.

Ability Bonus: +2 Strength, +2 Constitution or +2 Dexterity
Size: Medium
Speed: 6 squares
Vision: Low-light

Languages: Common, Abyssal
Skill Bonuses: +2 Intimidate, +2 Endurance
Demonic Might: You have a +1 racial bonus to your Fortitude defense.
In addition, you gain a +5 racial bonus to saving throws against fear effects and disease.
Blood of the Demon: The first time you or an enemy is bloodied during an encounter, you gain a +2 racial bonus to damage rolls until the end of the encounter or until you drop to 0 or fewer hit points.
Demonic Origin: One of your parents was a native of the Abyss, so you are considered an elemental (demon) creature for the purpose of effects that relate to creature origin.
Human Heritage: One of your parents was a human, so you can take feats that have human as a prerequisite, as long as you meet any other prerequisite.
Poison Resistance: You have resist poison 5 + half your level.
Demon Grip: Your inhuman strength allows you to wield two-handed weapons in one hand as though they were one-handed, with a penalty of -1 to attack rolls.

Every now and then, the impossible happens; a demon, drawn by passionate emotions overpowering its innate instincts, consummates with a human and gives life to something wholly unwelcome in the world: a half-demon. Spurned by everyone around them, half-demons learn to adapt quickly to the hatred that all other civilized races have towards them, especially humans. Stubborn, powerful, and lonely, half-demons hide their human hearts behind their demon flesh.

Play a half-demon if you want…

To be a lone wolf with a tragic past.

To be a driving force to achieve glory and acceptance.

To be a member of a race that favors the fighter, ranger, rogue, warlord, swordmage, barbarian, and warden classes.

The Guildmaster chuckles awkwardly at Wingtip, "I'm sorry Sir, but it's pronounced Randus. As for where we are going, Master Pixie, we need to go to my office to decode this device." He says, lightly shaking the cylinder. With a wave of his non-metal hand, the walkway and the seven passengers are lifted up a few levels, before halting at an over-watch room. Randus disembarks, beckoning the group with him.

The room is fairly spacious, roughly twenty-five feet by twenty-five feet. The forward wall facing out into the Guild has a large glass-pane window, but is otherwise bare. The two side walls are lined with a number of electronic and mechanical devices, only some of which might be familiar to Runeblade and Ultime; everyone else is virtually clueless about the machines' purposes or functions. The back wall has a massive screen, depicting words, equations, and schematics, in both Common and Dwarven, that come across as gibberish. One diagram in particular stands out: a strange-looking Airship that looks unlike anything ever before seen. The details are hard to decipher, as the image itself is a conglomeration of blues and whites without rendered content.

Randus approaches a a fifteen-by-five-foot table, one loaded with vials and burners, gears and cogs; he takes the tube and implants it in a slot at roughly center-table; the device clicks and whistles, the top end blooming open to emit a magical projection-a hologram. The shape coalesces into a cluster of four large, horizontal cylinders surrounding a smaller rectangular box, which then has a much longer and thinner cylinder stretching outward in both directions of the box; looking at it, the cluster rests about three-quarters of the way along the line. The image spins gently, and words begin to appear at random intervals accompanied by white lines directed at spots on the hologram.

"After the War, most Airships followed a set design and structure, based on the surviving models. Some, like the
Venerated Honor, have been upgraded and modified as new materials and experiments have improved our construction and science, but they are still based on an antiquated design model. This new engine is a cooperative element of the Artificers of the Guardians, to be built and installed in the newest prototype Airship designed by the best minds of Aeronaut Industries and Mithril Wings Incorporated. We are currently calling the project 'Valkyrie', in honor of one of the Lost Eidolons. With this schematic and its final design touches, courtesy of your Guildmaster of Valestia, Master Dwarf, we can now construct the newly named Hyperion-Class engine for the 'Valkyrie'."

Something horrible happened.

All of my D&D papers are gone.  Cry

I literally have nothing left of this campaign everything was put in the trash (and taken to the curb Thursday) along with papers that were vital to my home 4e game. I'm at a loss guys I really don't know what to do.

Ah. Sorry for your loss, Rev.  Sad

When my depression was at its worst, my Shadow War campaign was one of the things that really helped me. Having a place to let my mind free a bit and to connect with other people was very good for me.

So, while George is absolutely right that the game should not be thought of as a responsibility, I also want to caution you not to isolate yourself. Stay in touch with us here, in whatever way you can.

Life is more fun at Major Spoilers!  lol

Appreciate the support, Nav. Always do. Smiley

I'm finally feeling better, so I should have the next part of the Prologue up soon. Thank you guys for your patience.

Hey guys.

Sorry about the slow response time, but my depression's been acting up lately; more Suicide Flashes than normal. Can't afford anti-depressants so I've been keeping it in check through sheer will.

I'll try to update the story again once my blues have lifted. Sorry for the delay. Sad

Randus looks at Ultime is amusement, "That's quite alright, I'm always happy to help out a fellow practitioner of the arcane. Uh, very astute of you, the dweomer is the most stable attribute, but there are a few older processes along with some Alchemical application; the Theorem of Equivalent Exchange is the basis for our enhanced space...along with a few personal interpretations from my own experiences..."

He quiets at the end there, seemingly lost in memories. His companion -chirrups- at him, and he shakes off the lull. He takes the package, a surprisingly small, tubular object in brown paper, and letter from Runeblade. Handing the letter to his spider-bot, the Guildmaster holds the package in his robotic fist while using his flesh-and-bone hand to call a crane. The mobile catwalk is lowered and Randus gestures for you all to hop on.

Mayhaps it was the unsanctioned cameo.

I had permission from Rodrigo. So long as I don't have Randus do anything that conflicts with his character, it's okay.

{Ultime, you recognize the workings of a spatial alteration spell, most likely as a result of runic seals, granting the building more space as necessary. There is also a very strong magical resonance coming from under the massive cloak.

Rune, despite your profession, you can't quite recognize the disparate arcane processes working here; without question, the Artificers of Daro are a breed apart from your brethren in Valestia}

The Guildmaster walks before Runeblade and smiles encouragingly, "I understand you're His Majesty King Gregoriah's envoy; nice to meet you, I'm Randus DuThane. Do you have the package?"

...*sigh* So I guess this movie's some kind of "next-stage" of tolerance?

I finally beat the whole "homosexuality is bad" out of my system a few months ago, so if I look at it from that open-minded standpoint I can probably stomach it...

But they're zombies...

The only thing you're supposed to do with zombies is shoot 'em in the head.

Yeah, it's a total "Shaggy and Scooby" moment, lol
