Media / Movies / Re: Star Trek Into Darkness (no spoilers)

That's good to hear, I enjoyed the last one, so my hopes were less dismal than usual. Same. This is one of the few movies I've actually been looking forward to with excitement in a long while (the last was Avengers). I can't wait to see what happens in the alternate universe that these movies take place in (I refuse to call it a reboot because alternate timelines are a staple Trek story device), and if it is just half as good as the last one I'll be quite pleased. If it is better, then I'll be as giddy as Slappy with a cloning machine and some Bea Arthur DNA. Hopefully the abrams Star Wars will be as good.
I'm not holding my breath. It isn't anything against Abrams himself, though, I'm sure he'll do a great job with the movie. I just am worried Disney is going to muck the whole thing up to make a quick buck.

I needed the podcasts to drown out the so-called "best hits of the 70's 80's & 90's". I listen to about eight and a half hours of podcasts a day, five days a week. We have two stations where I live that I actually like. One is a station run by the college in town (one of them, anyway, there are technically like three colleges here) and aside from it's internet stream, it doesn't broadcast very far (pretty much limited to this city). The station is used for whatever courses the college offers for communications or something, so at various times you'll hear pretty much all sorts of music that the student DJs put on. It is actually pretty cool because the variety is astounding, and you very rarely hear the same song twice in a day (and often longer). The other is your average "rock/metal" station (which is only rock or metal half the time, no matter how much they claim otherwise) most of the time, but twice a week they air a two and a half hour block where they play stuff by indie or "local" bands (even if they aren't "local" to this area). The majority of it is actually pretty great, although they do get the occasional band trying too hard to emulate another band and coming off just awful (there was a Rammstein wannabe band that sang in German the way Peggy Hill speaks spanish).

'Come as you are' is my top one song from the 90's. You know what makes me feel like an old geezer? That was one of my favorite songs in my youth, and I felt REALLY old when I heard a remake of it on "Defiance" a couple of weeks back. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad or butchered version and would have sounded great on a tribute album, but the fact it has already been remade just makes me feel old. And I won't even go in to the issue of songs I remember when they were new are already on "classic rock" (which is like saying "more recent oldies") stations.

I was under the impression that the game was supposed to take place during the show, but in a different location. The official Defiance site said that is what the game is supposed to be, it takes place alongside the show, just in another part of the country (I am almost certain I read that it is supposed be California). Which I've got to say I really like the idea there because it lets you get a further glimpse in to the lore and that world instead of just repeating what we've seen or will see on the series.

Love the series, but have no real interest in the game. I just cannot justify the cost of the game even if it were a type of game I'd play (not a big fan of shooters personally).
A friend's husband is playing it on PC, though, and he says nothing but good things.

Slightly off topic, but... I digress, I don't know why I've been on this kick lately. Anything Prehistoric I just have to watch or read about. Some of my favorite stories in certain franchises involve alternate history or incidents where some Dinosaurs didn't die (such as the semi-recent Doctor Who episode where they found some Dinos on a spaceship, Marvel's Savage Land or the Dinotopia novels when I was a kid). I've even used it as a basis of one of the alternate timelines in my story's setting (a parallel Earth where Dinosaurs never died out and some evolved alongside humans, some are still beast-like, and the entire world is very, very different). When Jurassic Park first came out, I remember being very excited to read some articles that theorized what if different dinosaurs from different eras were to exist at the same time (picking specific types that would create a semi-harmonious ecosystem, which ones would cause others to be wiped out, etc.).

All of my anti-establishment views, my belief in Anarcho-primitivism, my dislike of all forms of fundamentalism, my anti-censorship beliefs and the idea that no knowledge should be forbidden... all of it I can trace back to seeing this film when I was a child. From my political and social perspective it is the most important film to show young people. But rather than subject you to all that, I'll just say that G'Mork is awesome, in the true sense of the word. I'm Scale Enlie, and that's what I reckon.
Once more proving that Werewolves are excellent teachers. Half-joking aside, I'm actually sad that I didn't take any life lessons from that movie. It did spark my interest in Asian type dragons (before that, the only dragons I knew of were the stereotypical fire-breathing lizards), but I wouldn't really call that a profound influence.

Also, adults escorting kids around as they collect lollies? Was it always like that? In movies the kids always run around by themselves, is it another case where 'stranger danger' has changed tradition?
Sort of. I live in a... Well, not a big city, but not a small town either, so not everyone knows everyone. There have also been incidents in the past where teenagers (and, unfortunately, a few idiotic adults) have stolen candy from the younger kids or even something worse. There is actually a city rule because of that where kids under a certain age have to be accompanied by someone over a certain age. It used to be only kids under 6 (which seems reasonable even if it wasn't a city rule), but a few years back it became kids under 10 have to be with someone over a certain age (I think it is 16, but it might be 18).

On one hand, it's about kids having fun and eating lollies. On the other hand its American culture spreading over the globe... and damn it, no one will give me any lollies because I'm too old to be participating in the event!
That sucks! I have a personal rule that I'll give anyone who comes to my door in costume candy regardless of age, but this works two ways. On one hand, I'm happy to give an adult or older sibling or whatever taking their kid, siblings, etc. around in costume a bit of candy to make them smile (and it often makes the kids laugh that their parent got candy too). On the other hand, I won't give candy to the lazy teenagers who show up without a costume and simply expect free candy (seriously, at least make minimal effort and put on some makeup or a mask or something). I do love Halloween, though. It is one of the few days out of the year I can go out in public in any costume I want and not get hauled off to the mental hospital. I don't trick-or-treat, obviously, but I still manage to snag a few bits of candy when I take my friends kids around (some people refuse to let us leave unless I take a piece).

Is Topanga on it? If so then, oh yeah, I'll check it out. Yeah, the series is about Corey and Topanga's daughter and she'll be a series regular. After seeing her Maxim photos recently, my Topanga crush has returned.

Okay, I know most of you probably have absolutely no interest in this series, but I just had to make a topic. The original "Boy Meets World" is one of my guilty pleasures to watch in the early morning hours when it airs on ABC Family, and I'm interested in at least seeing what the BMW characters have done since the finale. I was quite excited today to see that we will at least see Mr. Feeny again. Shame that Will Friedle won't be in the episode to introduce a new generation to the Feeny Call, though I could see him being unable to do so much like when he was Plays-With-Squirrels in an alternate future. I realize that the show is going to be aimed at the younger crowd and focus mostly on the kids, but I really do hope to see more of the old BMW cast show up from time to time.
