I really liked it. I loved the concept, the writing, and the execution. I really liked the acting with a few minor exceptions (I found the scenes with Ellen Page and Leo DiCaprio a little flat, but the supporting cast were just spectacular, and Marion Cotillard was amazing as Mol.)
Did anyone else see it yet?

This movie should be up for an Oscar. It was phenomenal. I'm still reeling from what I witnessed.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion about this movie.
I finally saw it today after it was released on dvd.
IMDB is filled with page after page of vicious, disrespectful posts. Of course, I shouldn't expect more from the site, I suppose.
But MS Forum is almost exclusively populated by intelligent, respectful, well-spoken people. (oh yeah...and Slappy is a member too.
)
So what did you think of Inception?

I don't see what all the fuss is about. The concept is interesting but when it comes down to the big pay off it seems really bland.
It also seems to have heaps of plot holes.
It's no Matrix in my book.

Why are you comparing it to The Matrix? It is its own movie.
What did you find to be major plot holes?
What is lacking that you felt left the movie as bland?

It has been a while since I've seen it (saw it in theaters only once) so forgive me if I am not ultra specific. Overall, I enjoyed the movie it was exciting and made me think at the end and made me a little uncomfortable about my own perceptions of morality. All things that when done well I love in a piece of entertainment, and Inception did all those things very well.
The basic premise of the movie was interesting and unique. It was essentially a heist movie, but the method of burglary was one that hadn't been done to death in movies before. Making the movie a reverse heist also put a nice twist on the basic formula they were working with. And the rationale they gave in the movie for how it could be possible seemed believable enough to me that I didn't question whether or not it was possible and just went with it, so suspension of disbelief was in full effect, which for this movie is very necessary.
The dream science is the big shiny new aspect this movie tries to sell the audience on and I think it does a good job with it. I have no idea how the finer points of human dreaming work, but even with a cursory knowledge of the subject I didn't feel too lost in all the fancy talk the characters did on the subject. The dream architecture was an interesting touch, that I still question a little, but it neither hurt nor helped the film too much either way so I can just leave it alone. My favorite part was the talk of architectural shortcuts though, I liked seeing the illusions that trick people in the dream world, it was fun.
The movie is very much an action thriller, and it accomplished the thrilling aspects very well. When the plan started to unravel I found myself eagerly watching to see how they were going to get themselves out of the next mess as everything fell apart around them. The explosions and chases were suspenseful and you always had a sense of doubt as to whether or not the characters would make it out of the situation.
The acting was overall pretty good, but that Juno girl (that's where I know her from right?) really seemed to miss her mark. I'm not sure whether to blame her or just the flat character she was playing, because a lot of it just seemed to make her a feel like a macguffin rather than a character with any depth. She just seemed to have no consistency in her outrage or intrigue with the main character, just feeling the way necessary to further the discoveries about the ex-wife.
By the end it gives you a nice little "you decide" moment and the audience is left aghast. I remember leaving the theater very frustrated by the lack of a solid conclusion, but that is just a personal issue, nothing wrong with the movie. The only thing negative I can say about that ending is that I saw the ending coming and knew it would be a cliffhanger one. Having the time to reflect on it afterward with a friend helped me decide what my own conclusion about the ending was, and any movie that generates a discussion afterward, for good or for ill, is a movie people should watch.

I really loved this movie. I wanted to see it in the theater, but waited for the DVD. I thought I had figured this movie out, but I was so wrong. The direction and wrtiting was amazing, and I am glad no one spoiled anything from it. It's Science Fiction and not Sci-Fi. It ranks up there with BLADE RUNNER, and ALTERED STATES, but that is my opinion. In retrospect, even though my love for Ellen Page is strong, her presence was kind of out of place. She doesn't really fit, but I can deal with it.
The visual aspect was amazing, even if some of the parts and the icey miltary complex was a little hollow, I am really grasping for complaints. As for the ending, I think it doesn't matter, maybe he came out and the mission was complete, or maybe he's a human carrot still on the plane.

It's no Matrix in my book.
But The Matrix, while good, was a rehash of Grant Morrison's The Invisibles, and that's why Reloaded and Revolutions sucked.

Loved the structure, and the way the transitions from scene to scene kept you guessing whether you were in reality or fantasy. The acting was great, and the concept was strong.
The only thing that took me out of the movie occasionally was the pseudo-science heaped on throughout the movie. At times it was so dense it seemed silly (okay...HERE if I die, I wake up, but HERE if I die I go into...uh...limbo? And then if I die THERE, I wake up? And why is all this again?).
In any case, the story was very well done, and the reveal, while not entirely a surprise, certainly made sense. One other thing. Did anyone else notice how many former child stars were in this movie? I thought that was interesting.

I'm comparing it to the Matrix because they have similar themes and what else am I meant to compare it too? Bunny Rabbits?
The death thing mentioned was a major hole SPOILER btw. Another one was the kick, that one only seemed to work when they wanted it.
The blandness came from the drawn out building and the final caper. They spent heaps of time talking up the architect and how she was gifted then the worlds they were in were bland. There was 1 use of the paradox architecture and that was just to jazz up an already cool fight scene.
In the end it just seemed to go, "Oh yeah we're fighting people now..."
Its not as bad as I make it out to be though. I just wouldn't get your hopes up if you haven't seen it. You'll enjoy it more.

I'm suggesting it doesn't need compared to a different movie for us to discuss Inception. It seems half the posts on movie message boards are all about how the movie at hand is like another. There are no truly original stories because we are all influenced by shared experiences.
Inception (or any movie) can be discussed on its own merits. Even a remake could be discussed singularly although there comparisons are warranted. Inception is not a remake of The Matrix yet all reality-bending movies seem to get compared to The Matrix.
As for the movie we are actually discussing, I agree that the architect thing felt a little off. The original scenes where Ariadne (Ellen Page's character) was learning about her abilities suggested much potential that wasn't brought in as much in later scenes.
But the way I took this was to show us what the mind could do so that, even when we saw the more mundane world the characters experienced in the dream, we remained cognizant of the skill it took to build it and that we were, in fact, in a dream.
I think it was meant to pull us out of reality initially so that, later, when we saw what looked like reality as we know it our own minds would superimpose that sense of surreality onto it. Thus, we were better able to perceive it as a dream world instead of simply being aware of it as a conscious viewer.

Lukas Haas (the first architect) was the little kid in Witness.
That makes the three main characters, plus one more minor character.

I like your interpretation for why that scene was in the movie. It makes sense to me. However, I disagree that the unlived potential was a problem. The scene was explaining why everything later had to be mundane, the more the architect used the power of her mind overtly the more likely they were to get caught, so the trick was actually to keep your mind under control and not use all of its potential.

Yes, that is true. They were quite clear about that.
