it's too much allegory to be taken seriously, but the action is fun

I heard about it as allegedly being a mix of Fahrenheit 451 and Matrix and blindly bought the DVD. I was pretty disappointed after the first watching when I saw how much style-over-substance it was. And I know that Christian Bale was supposed to show no emotion throughout the film, but I expected him to at least breakt out once and convey something other than his character being an awesome fighter... meh.
I mellowed down a bit after watching the director's commentary and watching it a second time. Still, one of the final fights is probably the most disappointing piece of action filming of all time... the other one (the fist-fight) I like.

I am a bit torn on the film.
I think the message that we are insulating ourselves from not only our fellow man but also our own emotions is poignant. We are often taught as children to suppress not only negative emotions (eg, "Don't get mad at me!"..."You cry and I'll give you something to cry about."...etc.) but even good feelings (eg, a kid gets a good report card and is told, "Don't be too proud of yourself.").
When we pack away those emotions they create voids that must be filled in other ways. Drugs, alcohol, crime, war, whatever.
So when someone comes along with an answer for the void we feel, even if that answer is "Feel nothing and then you won't hurt any more." we might be rather quick to embrace that solution.
I am not sure about the execution of the movie though. I think Bale did a good job. Any overt emotion would be out of character because, even without the drug, people's minds had become conditioned to operate as he was previously.
The writer, Kurt Wimmer, is quite the fan of his gun kata. Ultraviolet also saw its use.
I would like to see someone use it to a higher degree without the opponents being in a circle around the person. Not only is that a stupid way for any group to shoot at a target but it doesn't display the trajectory calculations I think would be even more cool to see. ... But at least they didn't curve the bullet like in Wanted.
I think the movie might have benefited just a bit more with more character interaction. Bale's character, his mentor, his children, the new partner; all had unique perspectives on everything. At some parts I felt the attempt to show withdrawn emotion also prevented us as viewers from connecting to the subtle nuances of what each character could bring to the overall work.
I really enjoyed the movie and I'm glad I watched it. I would watch it again. I might even own it if it was fairly cheap.
I would recommend it to others. I'm just not sure if it is quite all it should be.
