With characters and events moving full force on The Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon series airing Saturday’s on the Kids’ WB! on the CW, it was only a matter of time before we see the likes of Black Cat and that space goo that eventually turns into Venom appear.

The first hints happen this Saturday (May 17, 2008), and the CW has sent Major Spoilers the first few images from the show.

In the episode, Spider-Man learns the hard way not to judge a book by its cover, when another Spider-Man starts making headlines … as a crook! It’s the Chameleon, master of disguise, looting the city and laying the blame at Spidey’s feet. The Web-Slinger’s forced to team up with another crook, the lovely Black Cat, to stop his foe’s faux-Spidey crime spree and clear his name. The episode is written by Matt Wayne and directed by Dave Fausett. “The Spectacular Spider-Man” is produced by Culver Entertainment, a Sony Pictures Television Company.

Or - “Shvaughn? Is That You?”

My new manager Deon (who is wrong only half as often as Tom Grice, but only about 1/3 as pretty) and I got to talking the other day about the work of Jim Shooter, a writer whose work bounces all over the spectrum. For every Harbinger, Rai, or ‘Adventure Comics’-era Legion, there is a ‘Hank Pym punches Janet’ moment, a ‘Shadow State,’ or “MORE GORE FOR THE ORG!!!” Whichever JIm Shooter you get writes tightly plotted yarns with nice character bits, but the overall effect of the writing varies wildly, as anyone who ever read ‘Plasm’ can attest. Which Jim is onboard for this new run of Legion?

Previously, on Legion of Super-Heroes: With the departure of Legion leader Supergirl back to the 20th century, (and a run of what I have to call some of the most gawdawful comics in recent memory) and Cosmic Boy still gallivanting in the 41st century, the big chair of the LSH fell to Garth Ranzz, known to his friends as Lightning Lad. Garth has had some very rough spots, but is finally settling into a real leadership role. After a hard mission on Triton, he was forced to mediate a dispute between Saturn Girl and Timber Wolf, which led to Imra agreeing not to meddle in the minds of her teammates, and Timber Wolf admitting that his behavior was beyond the pale. As for T-Wolf’s ladyfriend Princess Projectra, she is dealing with no longer being royalty, no longer being rich, and no longer having the shield of the aristocracy to protect her. Her possessions are being auctioned to pay Orando’s debt to the United Planets, and Jeckie herself is riding a razor’s edge of rage. When accosted by tourists in downtown Metropolis, the Princess beats the holy hell out of an innocent alien…

This issue starts seconds later, with Timber Wolf trying to stop his big blonde beau from walloping a second blue-skinned creature, only to find himself (rather embarassingly easily) taken down by Projectra’s fists of fury. Saturn Girl flies down from above and intercedes, only to find that the alien is completely unhurt. “We are from Planet Doopa! We are very… not-breakable people. Sturdy!” Heh. The tourists are placated with a quick photo, while Saturn Girl asks T-Wolf why he called her. “Were you hoping I’d just telepathically mindwipe all the witness and get her out of trouble? Like I did for you on Triton?” Brin quietly admits yes, and the two Legionnaires seem to tacitly make peace.

Back at Legion headquarters, Brainiac 5, Invisible Kid, and Lightning Lad try to find out a: why they’re being charged for cleaning up a Venusian stinkwart plague decontamination, b: why a giant creature attacked Brainy and Shadow Lass last time ’round, and what to do about the Legion’s budget. Suddenly, a vaguely familiar red-haired Science Policewoman bursts in holding a gun on them all. “Stay where you are! Take your pants off and lie face down on the floor!” Heh. Brainiac 5 immediately realizes that Chameleon is toying with them, explaining where the alien monster is being dissected. Invisible Kid realizes that the only people that the U.P. could be protecting their discovery against is the Legion themselves, and immediately uses his abilities to sneak into the operating theatre undetected. Saturn Girl broadcasts what he sees directly into Brainy’s mind, and they suddenly realize that all the superhumans rejected from the recent Legion tryouts are in costume and watching the procedure!

Brainiac warns I.K. to keep himself under control, but is distracted by the realization that the monster isn’t quite dead yet. As the creature leaps back to life, Invisible Kid kills it with a power saw (Hee.) “Zorkies!” cries one of the idiot pseudo-Legionnaires, “That was Invisible Kid. Invisible Kid did that!” No crap, there, Skolnick… And could the fake cursing get any more annoying? Yeesh… The team suddenly tries to regroup, realizing that they’re all busted, barely gets to think before the President calls. Invisible Kid is being prosecuted, and the entire Legion is grounded, pending a full inquiry. Worse than that, of course, is the realization that more cyborg destroyers may be on their way, and if Brainiac’s theory is correct, they’re going to be even more powerful than the ones they’ve already faced. We get a somewhat sexy little scene with Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl decompressing from a rough day (with implications of something a little naughty, to boot) before the United Planets interrupts them with a cry for help. Saturn Girl agrees to lead a mission to Rimbor, with Ultra Boy as her first recruit…

This issue is interesting, but passes by quickly, and the events, while noteworthy, don’t really give the impression of a full chapter, instead seeming more like a few pages in a larger continuing story. It’s not a satisfying chunk of action, even with the nice character developments for Saturn Girl, Ultra Boy, Timber Wolf and Princess Projectra. Shooter’s story is nicely plotted, but I’m not feeling the urgency of “What will happen next?” The art, by Aaron Lopresti, is more reminiscent of Barry Kitson’s work than Francis Manapul’s reworking of the team from recent issues, but it’s solid nonetheless. Overall, this issue, while good, doesn’t quite get past the 2.5 out of 5 star mark, well-crafted but not overwhelming, and while I am interested in where the story is going, I’m just not getting the world-shattering changes that DC’s hype seemed to be promising for the LSH. Still, at least we don’t have women with breasts twice the size of their head screaming “I’m dripping with gore for my lust-mate!” so it’s an overall win…

Just a reminder for those of you who don’t check this site every moment of the day, or don’t pay attention to the right column of this site (which contains a ton of valuable information) - we have a little show called The Major Spoilers Podcast, the podcast for pop culture and comic fans.

Each week the panel takes a look at some of the major stories from the week, review (relatively) new comics, take a look at a collected trade, and ponder the world of comics and pop culture. We’ve had some most excellent guests on the show, with more on the way, raised money for the Hero Initiative, and have been working on something big coming up in the very near future.

So if you haven’t, take a moment to browse the Major Spoilers Podcast archive, listen to a show or two, and make sure you participate in the Major Spoilers Forum and in the comment section beneath each article; you never know when your comment might be included in the show.

We record a brand new episode every Tuesday night, and you’ll be able to listen to it via iTunes (absolutely free) or directly from the Major Spoilers site first thing Wednesday morning.

And, if you have already been listening to the Major Spoilers Podcast, tell your friends about the show when you head to your local comic book store tomorrow. The more people that listen, the more guests we can bring on the show, the more events we’ll be able to sponsor, and the bigger the prizes we’ll be able to give away.

“Big Prizes?”

Oh, keep listening… (evil wicked smile goes here).

Here is the cover to the latest Comic-Con magazine featuring Samuel L. Jackson as the Octopus on the cover.

I know the first thing out of many commenter’s mouths will be the fact that readers never saw the face of the Octopus in The Spirit comics. As I said over a year ago, the biggest problem with seeing Jackson’s face on screen is the demand for face time. It would be so much nicer if he would have played the entire role in shadow. His voice is famous enough to let audiences know it is him.

It went down to the wire, but the supernatural drama Reaper got its renewal notice yesterday during the CBS upfront presentation.

The more I watch this series, the better it becomes, and I will say Reaper is on its way to becoming the male-centric version of Buffy by the time next season is over. Smart dialog, good acting, great special effects, just the right amount of humor, make this my must watch show of the week.

Reaper will return for 13 episodes during the mid-season next year, more than likely appearing on Thursday night opposite Supernatural.

And since I’ve mentioned Reaper in a Major Spoilers article, it’s time for a Missy Peregrym appreciation moment after the jump.

or, “Superheroes. In. SPAAAACCCE!”

With a Crisis in the DC Universe there inevitably comes a return to Rann and Thanagar. Thus, for all of us who enjoy a bit of the good old science fiction, all of our space heroes come together to deal with some cosmic threat that somehow always ends up focusing on Rann and/or Thanagar.

So the first entry in DC’s Final Crisis turns out to be the Rann-Thanagar Holy War, and it looks as if Jim Starlin, writer of this series, has a definite issue with religion.

RANN/THANAGAR: HOLY WAR #1 (OF 8)
Written by Jim Starlin
Art and variant cover by Ron Lim and Rob Hunter

As a religious person myself, I was immediately intrigued by the dialogue throughout this story. I was not offended, as it offered an entirely justifiable opinion of much of today’s religion; heavy handed and unnecessarily harsh. Adam Strange – a man who clings to science like a drowning man to a life-raft – is baffled by the Rannians turn away from science to a religion that, in addition to be flimsy, is focusing on the evil of Lady Styx (see below).

Possibly one of the best lines that I’ve seen in comics for a good long while comes from Animal Man, towards the end of this issue, as he sits down with Kory and Adam Strange. “You planning on zeta-beaming a bunch of Jehovah’s Witnesses to Rann or something?” Priceless! It’s what I’d do!

The cast of this book is definitely going to make for interesting storytelling. Obviously Adam Strange, Kory (aka, Starfire) and Animal Man are going to star, after their long journey home after the last Crisis (check 52 if you missed it). Joining them are names like Tygor, Hawkman (Carter Hall), Comet (though not for long), Starman, Bizarro (who isn’t as villainous as one would immediately imagine), and a host of villains including Find and Seek, Lady Styx (I think) and some other dude I’ve been unable to identify.

Summarizing this issue won’t be easy, so I won’t really try. Following in the footsteps of 52 (and other Crisis events) this issue follows a multitude of events and characters rather than one. But there does seem to be an overarching anti-religious tone, as I mentioned earlier. Both Thanagar and Rann are experiencing religious revivals, the former bowing to a name called ‘The Profit’ (spelt correctly btw) or ‘The Nameless One,’ and the latter somehow turning their religious fervor to Lady Styx.

For those unfamiliar with the story, Rann has suffered mightily at the hands of Lady Styx previously, after she forced them all to worship her through some sort of virus. Well it looks as if the Rannians have been left with some latent need to have faith in someone or something, and they’ve turned their attention to back Lady Styx.

Another storyline focuses on Hardcore Station, one of those interstellar mining outposts that in any story it appears in always turns into a breeding ground for “questionable deals and smuggling.” Captain Comet, now just Comet, has just returned from briefing the JLA and is being contacted by Adam Strange. However, a pair of villains I’ve never heard of (the afore mentioned Seek and Find) have turned up on Hardcore Station to work for some priestly alien looking dude. It’s all connected, I think!

The only other storyline worth mentioning is Starman, protector of Throneworld, who encounters Bizarro. Now, sure, Bizarro takes out most of the Throneworld imperial guard before meeting Starman, but it appears that he’s just lost and hungry. So instead of just running in and fighting, Starman has to turn to “somewhere between my royal ears” for the answer, and takes Bizarro inside for something to eat (MEAT!).

There is one last amusing note to make, and that is Comet’s briefing of the JLA. It’s oh so very political, and targeted at the US government (Starlin’s writing, not Comet’s briefing), as Comet announces that “no invasions [of Earth] are planned because no one feels they’re needed.” Why don’t any of the alien groups out “there” feel that they are needed? Because of Earth’s “pollution, especially in the greenhouse gas department, nuclear proliferation, regional wars and [our] out-of-control overpopulation.” Subtle. Very subtle.

Ron Lim’s pencils and Rob Hunter’s inks are really quite nice in this issue, and make up for a bit of a confusing and preparatory storyline. Adam Strange and Hawkman’s early interactions are really well drawn, with hard lines for hard men. Starman also is really well drawn, as the top half of his face is hidden beneath a mask, his mouth is left to do the expressions normally accounted for by mouth and eyes and eyebrows, something that Lim manages perfectly.

The story for this get’s a 4, as I am now immensely curious as to how the rest of this eight part series will fall out. The art gets a 4 as well, detracting points mainly for Kory and Robin’s depictions in the Titans Tower scenes half way through the book, not to mention Red Arrow’s buzz-cut. Either way, this is definitely a Final Crisis book you’ll want to get your hands on!
