Heijningen Directing Army of Dead

Thursday, June 5th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

I was debating this morning on whether or not to cover zombie stuff anymore.  While I feel the zombie genre is way over, apparently other people are just getting on the boat; Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. for example with their latest Army of Dead.  Announced today is the hiring of Matthijs van Heijningen as the director for the flick - a first time director by the way.

“We were looking for an inventive talent with a unique voice and we found it in Matthijs,” said Snyder, a commercial director-turned-feature filmmaker. “His ability to infuse humor with irony allows him to create compelling stories in 30 seconds.”

Army of the dead focuses on a father trying to save his daughter from the zombie infested world.

Marvel Zombies 3

Sunday, June 1st, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

MARZOM3_logo.jpg

Do we really need another zombie tale set in the Marvel Universe? According to Fred Van Lente, the answer is yes. In the next installment, one of the zombies escapes from zombie world and stumbles into Marvel 616 territory, thus making Marvel Zombies an in continuity title.

“Marvel Zombies 3” will focus on a different group of zombies than Kirkman and Phillips’ books. “This is partly because ‘MZ3’ is set in a very specific period of ‘MZ’ continuity,” Van Lente explained. “For fear of giving away too much, I’m going to tell you when, exactly. But let’s just say the pursuit of sweet, sweet human flesh makes for some odd allies.”

The four issue mini-series will debut in October. I don’t know about you, but the zombie genre has overstayed its welcome.

MEGO Figures Live! For Brains!

Friday, March 7th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

notld001-1.jpgFans of dolls action figures probably shed a little tear of joy when EMCE Toys brought back the Star Trek and Planet of the Apes figures based on the original MEGO molds. The company has decided to go a step further by getting some of the original MEGO gang back together to develop an original line of figures based on The Night of the Living Dead.

In time for the film’s 40th anniversary, figures based on the Graveyard Zombie, hero Ben, damsel-in-distress Barbra and iconic undead child Karen Cooper will be released throughout 2008. Graveyard Zombie and Ben will be the first released.

The heads are sculpted by fan favorite James Brady in the classic MEGO rotocast plastic style, and the figures are packaged in MEGO-style blister packaging with illustrations by original MEGO artist Harold Shull.

The first two figures will be released in 2008.

Marvel Zombies 2 #1

Zombies 2 - Electric Boogaloo

picon.jpg

Several years ago I had a freak out, and stopped eating meat, stopped with the caffeine, and processed sugars. There are a couple of good things about avoiding those things. First there’s that whole healthier living thing, and second, I got to eat all the veggie pizza, been burritos, and tofurkey sandwiches that I wanted (really tofurkey isn’t as bad as it sounds). The toughest part about my sudden conversion to semi-vegetarianism (I still ate eggs and cheese), was the first two weeks. Every Big Mac commercial, every KFC ad, even the smell of steak was enough to nearly drive me out of my mind. Then after that passed, all was right with the world. My head cleared, I had more energy, and I lost a ton of weight. After a while, that Quarter Pounder with Cheese ad did nothing for me, it even made me a little disgusted (like that is anything new). What’s this have to do with Marvel Zombies 2 #1? Well, what is a zombie to do when it’s eaten all the flesh in the universe?

Read First Issue of The Savage Brothers for Free

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

picon.jpg

Boom! Studios is releasing The Savage Brothers trade paperback today, and to get you into the story, the company is letting you read the first 22 pages for free at the company website.

Written by the creator of the hit Sci Fi TV show EUREKA, Andrew Cosby, and EUREKA staff writer Johanna Stokes with art by new fan favorite and current BLUE BEETLE artist Rafael Albuquerque, THE SAVAGE BROTHERS tells the post- zombie-lyptic tale of Dale and Otis Savage–who’ll hop in their Ford F-150, and bring back, or put down any of your undead relatives… for a price. Things get weird (relatively speaking) when Dale and Otis get hired to retrieve a zombie scientist who may hold the key to the supernatural apocalypse.

I read the first issue earlier this week, and it is pretty quirky and funny for a zombie tale, hopefully this weekend I’ll have time to finish the trade.

Take the jump to see the first seven pages and the link to the rest.

The Last Christmas Heading for Screen

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

lastchristmas.jpgThe Last Christmas by Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan has been optioned by Hollywood Gang Production.

The novel revolves around Santa Claus, who turns his back on Christmas and goes into seclusion after nuclear war has destroyed the world. When the North Pole gets attacked, Santa must battle zombies and renegades to save the remaining survivors, and ultimately, the holiday.

This book was a big hit last year in the bookstores, and if the movie is done correctly, could be a big hit for an upcoming holiday season as well. No word on release date, but Craig J. Flores will be the executive poducer, with Gianni Nunnari producing.
