Or – “Quickly Approaching The Point Of No Return…”

Let’s be honest for a moment: The Incredible Hulk has never been a capital-h Hero in the conventional sense. His actions have always been driven by his flailing emotions, usually the need to be left alone Even during his Defenders days the Hulk was more of a force of nature, a living weapon that Doctor Strange simply pointed in the right direction and let the wackiness ensue. An old chestnut of Marvel said that the green guy had the gentle mind of a five-year-old, but many people forget that while five-year-olds can be joyful, gentle souls, they can also rage out of control when they don’t get what they want or when life is unfair. Ratchet that rage up to eleven, add in gamma-powered muscles as powerful as the heart of hurricane, and we’ve a recipe for disaster. And the Hulk has one more thing in common with a child: he doesn’t think about the consequences of what he’s done until something precious is broken…

According to Joe Quesada, it’s that pesky marriage between Peter Parker and Mary Jane that is limiting the stories writers can tell.
What other things spilled out of the two Marvel panels? I’ve got the highlights after the jump.

Yes it’s going to be another huge week for Marvel titles hitting the news stands (something like 22 titles!), so we are once again breaking the weekend sneaks into two parts.
In this installment MARVEL ILLUSTRATED: THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK 2, NEW AVENGERS 33, NEW AVENGERS/TRANSFORMERS 2, NEW EXCALIBUR 22, NOVA 5, OMEGA FLIGHT 5, POWERS 25, PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL 10, ULTIMATE X-MEN 85, WORLD WAR HULK: FRONT LINE 3, X-FACTOR 22
Or – “I Believe That It’s Time To Smash…”

The Hulk has engaged the forces of the Marvel Universe, to their eternal dismay, and now a new and different Hulkbuster force is moving towards their date with destiny. The entire Marvel Universe is holding it’s breath in anticipation of what happens next… My prediction? Afternoon tea and reasoned discussion.
Or – “What Civil War Did For Ms. Marvel, World War Hulk Has Done For H4H…”

And by that I mean it’s brought character development to a complete halt, thrust the likable characters into a situation which doesn’t really do them any favors, and so far hasn’t really made a whit of difference on the overall conflict. But I’m not entirely bitter, as I suspect that the WWH sales bump is going to keep Heroes For Hire on the stands longer, and hopefully give us a chance to get back to the stories that brought me here. Either way, Misty Knight and her amazing friends are in WAY over their heads, and even the newly empowered Humbug may not be enough to push the scales back in their favor.

Captain Marvel gets a new title with Brian Reed writing and Lee Weeks doing the art work. It’s not one of those stories where Mar-vel comes back from the dead, rather a time-travel story where the Captain comes to grips with his death.
More highlights from the Mondo Marvel Panel after the jump.

With the success of both World War Hulk: X-Men #2 and Ghost Rider #13, which have both sold out at Diamond, Marvel decided to stir the pot even more by sending Major Spoilers sneak peeks at the next issues from both series.
Or – “Is He Man… Or Monster? And Will He Figure Out Which Before It’s Too Late?”

One of the fascinating things about World War Hulk to me is the underlying justification of the Hulk’s actions. He is acting out of vengeance for his wife, his unborn child, and his subjects on Sakaar, all of whom counted on him for protection. His reasoning, while brutal, is sound, and he pointed out to the Invisible Woman that she would be doing the same thing if HE killed Reed and her children, and she couldn’t really argue with him. Really, the whole thing boils down to lack of trust between the heroes and an almost chronic inability by the Illuminati to imagine that anybody is as smart as they are. With Black Bolt and Iron Man down, and Mr. Fantastic about to be in his sights (this issue takes place between pages of World War Hulk #2) it’s easy to forget about the other players on the field, but two of them are about to have a little tete-a-tete of their own…
Or – “Last Minute Reprieves? How Cliche Is That?“

I admit it. I’ve been irritated with the three issues of the Initiative thus far. Though there have been several very nice moments, the overall tone has been a bit dark and broody, as well as reminding me very much of “The Draft,” a twenty-year-old story from the New Universe. Add in what I suspect is a writer-designed hatred of Gauntlet’s tired New-Warriors-dead-baby jokes, and I’ve been on the verge of dropping the title altogether. This issue changes my mind, in a vast and sweeping way, and I’m happy to have been proven wrong. Though my comic budget may suffer, my overall feelings about the direction of the Marvel Universe have been on the upswing again, though an enjoyable World War Hulk #1 and a revitalized New Avengers don’t hurt, either. What made me change my mind?
Or – “These Guys Sure Do Like To Introduce Themselves A Lot…”

I have to hand it to Green Scar and his band of Merry Somethings-That-Resemble-Men… They’ve got the dramatic entrances down pat, and their tough-guy dialogue is top-notch. I’m a little confused by the timelines of the Marvel Universe right now, but thankfully, all we really need to know is that the beatdown of Iron Man came last issue, and Hercules and his amazing friends have not yet joined Hulk in his quest for vengeance. The Avengers are preparing to engage, but the Warbound have superior strength, vast determination, and no mercy whatsoever…
