What if Annihilus’ wasn’t defeated? What if the Annihilation made it to Earth? What if the invasion took place smack dab in the middle of Civil War and Silent war?

Or – “How Can A Crossover Take LONGER Than The Event Itself?”

H4H10.jpg

Y’know, I’ve been reading Heroes For Hire since the beginning, but for some reason the ‘World War Hulk’ crossover seems to have been going on since before the dawn of time. Certainly that comes partially from the fact that the Savage Land arc started way back in #9 and led directly into this crossover, and partially because they’re really trying to ratchet up the tension on this storyline. I don’t know that it’s NOT working, but it’s certainly got enough rough edges that part of me is asking “Are we THERE yet?” Events are coming to a head, and I hope that the payoff is worth the journey…

There are a lot of what ifs that float through my head every day some are quite funny, while others are disturbing, and some don’t have anything to do with comics at all.

Marvel’s What If? series returns asking not one question, but three, “what if the Hulk had arrived at the intended destination of the Illuminati?”, “What if Hulk died and his wife instead led the army against Earth?”, and “What if Banner, not the Hulk, landed on Sakaar?”

That’s right true believers, this issue contains three stories for your reading pleasure, and Marvel has sent a sneak peek of What If? Planet Hulk for your perusal.

The Illuminati took it upon themselves to rid the world of the Hulk… and it was a mistake.

The Red King of Sakaar believed he could kill the Green Goliath… and it was a mistake.

The heroes of Earth thought they could stop the Hulk with force… and it was a mistake.

Doctor Strange chose to channel Zom to end the fighting… and it was a mistake.

Hulk’s up to bat… Who wants to bet on how well it’s going to go?

It’s time for Frank Castle to get in on World War Hulk, and he does it in Punisher War Journal #12. Marvel sent us a sneak peek of the extra-sized issue that teams Matt Fraction and Ariel Olivetti as the Punisher attempts to protect those left behind in the wake of the Hulk.

The irony of the entire Hentai Controversy is that Heroes for Hire probably needed the press. The adventures of Jean Grey’s ex-roommate, her samurai sidekick, two Spider-Man villains, (one of whom talks to bugs) a new mysterious-tough-girl-in-spandex, and perhaps the greatest character of Marvel’s Bronze Age aren’t exactly burning up the charts, sales-wise. Indeed, orders at the store (Gatekeeper Hobbies, Huntoon & Gage, Topeka! Ask us about our chock-full 3 For A Dollar Bin!) have more than tripled due to the World War Hulk crossover, and there’s a pretty good chance that most of those readers aren’t coming back afterwards. Here’s hoping, though… In any case, our H4H friends are in quite the pickle, without even Tenzil Kem to help get them out.

So far during the WWH crossover, we’ve seen Hulk fighting the United States army, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and successfully taken over the entire island of Manhattan. Nobody questions that his actions are justifiable to himself, and honestly, some of the people he’s put the hurting on richly deserved it (I’m lookin’ at you, Mr. Stark!) but we’ve seen edges of a darker path in his actions. Now that he’s gathered his enemies in one place, Hulk now has to make the decision indulging his basest urges for revenge and living up to the expectations of his fans, the Renegades and Amadeus Cho.

It’s fascinating to me that no one in Tony Stark’s SHIELD has apparently the slightest inkling of what’s going on in Stamford with this supposedly military outfit. With all the time and energy that Iron Man has expended in trying to control every single aspect of superhuman life, I can’t believe that he wouldn’t AT LEAST debrief his ‘best friend’ Jim Rhodes on the things that happen in this camp. Of course, the presence of a freakin’ Nazi doesn’t do me much in the way of giving them the benefit of the doubt, and of course, there’s also the Nazi’s pet scientist Baron Von Blitzschlag. (See what I did there?) Henry Peter Gyrich has a long history of not trusting the capes as well as general asshattery, and both traditions are in full-force this issue… Read the rest of this entry »

Marvel Comics has provided us with a sneak peek at some of the titles arriving next week. This weekend Major Spoilers brings you Avengers: The Initiative 5, Black Panther 30, Fantastic Four 549, Silver Surfer: Requiem 4, World War Hulk: X-Men 3, and Stan Lee’s The Last Fantastic Four Story. I’ve taken a peek at the full issue of the Last Fantastic Four Story, and it isn’t half bad in a Stan Lee sort of way. It’s an interesting tale that doesn’t end like you might expect it.

On Wednesday you can expect a full review of the latest Initiative installment, but for now take the jump for a preview of things to come.
