Twentieth Century Fox has announced Gavin Hood will be directing the X-Men spin-off movie Wolverine staring Hugh Jackman. The movie begins production this November and is scheduled to debut in 2008.
Hood is the South African director whose 2005 film “Tsotsi” won the foreign film Oscar. He was among several hot young directors vying for “Wolverine” and sources said Fox brass was swayed after viewing his latest film, “Rendition,” the politically charged New Line drama starring Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Meryl Streep and Peter Sarsgaard. It opens Oct. 19 and premieres at Toronto.
Wolverine will be an origin story telling how he came into being, and will be diving into Marvel lore and Frank Miller’s Weapon X series for inspiration.
Wolverine is written by David Beniofff, with Hugh Jackman reprising his role as the indestructible mutant.

Or - “You Know You’re Tough When You Can Fight A Wendigo In Your Underwear…”

She-Hulk is one of those series that tends to avoid most people’s radar, with only the occasional mention by the fan press or internet to remind the non-readers that it’s still out there, and that’s really too bad. In any given month, one issue of She-Hulk will give you more for your entertainment value than many of the top ten “Hot Books.” I’ve never walked away from an issue of Dan Slott’s take on the green giantess wondering why I was looking forward to it, horrified by a garish Alex Ross/Michael Turner cover, or beating my head against a radiator at ridiculous plot developments, something I can’t say about a lot of books… *coughCivilWarTheReturncough* This month is no exception, as we see Jenny dealing with another of her lost cousin’s old-school foes, we remember one of the effects of gamma radiation, and we’re once again confronted with the fact that Cain Marko is a big fat liar. Confused? Read on , MacDuff…

Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi’s first issue of Wolverine has sold out at Diamond, according to Marvel. The sellout also includes the black and white variant cover.
Marvel says they have no plans to go back to print for another printing, but as we’ve seen before, give it a few days and the company will probably change it’s mind.
Loeb considers this his first major project for Marvel, and is extremely pleased with the news.
“The biggest hugs go out to my two contributors,” says Loeb, “my long time pal and astonishing artist Ed “Ed” McGuinness and then there’s the real superstar of this arc, Simone Bianchi. Getting the chance for the world to see Simone’s amazing talents — both in color and in black & white — is such a joy. His enthusiasm for this story and our working friendship explodes on every page. What I want the readers to know is that YES! There are answers to all the questions raised! And Yes! There will be a final confrontation between Marveldom’s awesomest and savage enemies Wolverine and Sabretooth. The best is still to come!”
If you really want to grab a copy of Wolverine #50, ask your retailer nicely as s/he may have a copy stashed behind the counter for emergencies.

What If? returns and this time around, the series of one-shots will focus on the latest and greatest of Marvel events. Next up, What If? Wolverine Enemy of the State! Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s “Enemy of the State” story arc was one of the defining Wolverine stories of recent years, but what if Wolverine hadn’t been de-programmed? A Wolverine with no moral fiber, no remorse and no friends to stop him is a force to be feared.

Or “Oooh! Scary stuff kids! Blah! Blah!”
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Though most years I don’t ever follow through with the cool costumes that I conceive during the year (this year’s favorite was pro wrestler “Earthquake,” to honor the late John Tenta, who recently passed away), I always like to do SOMETHING in honor of All Hallow’s. Now that I’ve reproduced, I have a built-in excuse (”Oh, this is for Molly!”), but the whole point is for grown-ups to act like kids. Y’know, dress ridiculously, eat tons of junk-food, try to annoy and scare your fellow man. (Though that IS most of what I do every day.) In any case, when I went to work at the comic store on Sunday, I scanned the racks for something appropriate to review today. Something horrifying. A story to chill the very blood. A comic to leave us all shivering and turning on extra lights. Suddenly, across the darkened comic book store, I saw it. A wolf howled in the distance, as my eye locked on the perfect victim… (more…)
