Oh yes, you can tell the opening of the movie is upon us, as more and more stuff floods the Major Spoilers Inbox.  The latest is the intro to the 1980s Watchmen Saturday Morning Cartoon Show.  Bet you don’t remember that one, do you?

Hilarity ensues…

Some of you fortunate souls already have your tickets for the midnight showings of Zack Snyder’s take on the Watchmen.  Some of us, won’t be able to see the film until later in the weekend, thanks to pregnant sisters who are demanding attention.  For others, they were able to view the movie weeks ago as part of the Warner Bros. press junkets that popped up around the country, and now that the embargo is lifted, the reviews are spilling out all over the Intarwebs.

Check out this review by Kenneth Turan of the L.A. Times.

If you don’t want to watch the video, there’s a summary and my thoughts after the jump.

Yes, just like very other comic book podcast in existence, the Major Spoilers crew will take a look at one of the most important graphic novels to have ever been written: Ragedy Anne and Andy Go to Candy Land Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen.

Moore used the story as a means to reflect contemporary anxieties and to deconstruct the superhero concept. Watchmen takes place in an alternate history United States where the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union, freelance costumed vigilantes have been outlawed and most costumed superheroes are in retirement or working for the government. The story focuses on the personal development and struggles of the protagonists as an investigation into the murder of a government sponsored superhero pulls them out of retirement and eventually leads them to confront a plot by one of their own to stave off nuclear war by killing millions of innocent people.

Who Watches the Watchmen? – A Veidt Music Network (VMN) Special – 1983. Uploaded from BetaSP archive.

Not as good as the previous NBS Nightly News bit, but still entertaining.

The premiere date grows ever closer, which means there are a lot more clips and previews popping up all over the place to heighten anticipation for the mega-movie event. I haven’t been to the theatres to see a movie since the summer, but you can bet I’ll be there opening weekend to see Watchmen.

More after the jump!

No, I’m not talking about that long line already waiting to get into the next Harry Potter movie, but the comic book adaptation being worked up between Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures.

Sylvain White is directing the adaptation of the Vertigo book, which follows a special forces team betrayed by their handler and left for dead. The Losers regroup in the interest of revenge and the opportunity to remove their names from a secret CIA death list and to conduct covert operations against the CIA and its interests.

Watchmen star Jeffrey Dean Morgan is negotiations to star as Clay, the leader of the group.  No release date has been announced as Morgan has scheduling conflicts with a few other films he’s working on.

Here’s the latest Watchmen clip to filter through the Intar-webs.  From MSN, it’s an actual conversation scene instead of the blow-em up real good stuff we’ve seen previously.

With all the hoopla surrounding the upcoming Watchmen movie, and with the realization that newcomers to the Watchmen series, are going to be left asking, “I’ve read this awesome series and have seen the movie, what’s next?” DC Comics has announced it’s After Watchmen campaign.   The campaign features a selection of $1.00 comics to be given away or sold at conventions and comic book shops.

This week, we return to the battle between the characters from Alan Moore’s Watchmen series, and the original characters that inspired them.  This week, it’s the battle of the ladies, as Silk Spectre wrestles with… well, there is no direct Charlton character that inspired Silk Spectre, but Alan Moore did say she is a cross between Phantom Lady and Black Canary.  So, let’s go with Phantom Lady.

I wish there was an IMAX theater near here that would show the Watchmen movie.  This visuals for this film look so slick and jaw dropping, that I would love to see it on a screen the size of a building.  Of course, I’m not sure I want to see Doctor Manhattan’s wang in IMAX, but you have to take the good with the bad.
