Good for a couple of laughs, if you liked the movie, and are wondering why the Watchmen didn’t do well in the theaters.

I got a chuckle out of this, you might find it humorous, or you might run out of the room screaming.

Depends on if you are in one of the four locations across the country July 17-24, 2009.  Warner Bros. marketing has announced the film will screen the full unedited director’s cut of the film at the following locations:

  • AMC Empire 25, 234 W. 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036
  • AMC Media Plaza 6 (AKA Town Center 6), 770 N. 1st Street, Burbank, CA 91501

  • Kerasotes Block E 15 Theaters, 600 Hennepin Ave S., Minneapolis, MN 55403

It should be pointed out that the show dates are during the San Diego Comic Con, and Warner opted to not use a San Diego theater, which will seriously cut into the take the rerelease hopes to make.

From comic to feature film to animated short story, screenwriter Alex Tse has played an essential role in helping transition WATCHMEN beyond its initial incarnation.

Ironically, when it came to bringing the graphic novel’s classic story-within-a-story, WATCHMEN: TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER, Tse wrote the screenplay without knowing what that final incarnation would be.

The fun doesn’t end for Watchmen fans as Warner Premiere’s Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, March 24.  Included in the release is co-producer/director Eric Matthies’ all-new take on Under the Hood, the Hollis Mason/Nite Owl autobiography from the original Watchmen graphic novel.

One of the more cutting-edge creators of DVD content in the industry, Matthies, along with partners Tricia Todd and Josh Oreck, has been responsible for acclaimed ancillary materials for such landmark DVD releases as The Matrix, 300 and Spider-Man. He has helped elevate DVD extra content to a new art form, and Under The Hood is a prime example.

I knew Zack Snyder’s Watchmen movie would have a drop in box office over the weekend, but I didn’t expect the feature film to drop a whopping 67% from its debut a week ago.  Watchmen was only able to bring in $18.1 million over the weekend, while Disney’s Race to Which Mountain, debuted with $25 million.

“This drop falls within the norm for big and highly anticipated movies,” Warners exec VP of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein said.

Pointing to several examples, Goldstein noted that “The Incredible Hulk” fell 60% in its second weekend after opening to $55.4 million. That film cumed $134.8 million domestically. “Sex and the City” fell 63% in its second frame on its way to cuming north of $150 million domestically.

While this may be the norm for Warner Bros. a 67% drop means there are a lot of people aren’t seeing the movie.  Could this be due to the subject matter getting an R rating, a plot mainstream audience won’t/can’t understand, the graphic violence, or does this mark a significant decline in interterest in comic book movies?  If it is, that could really be bad for the movie industry, as there are a plethora of comic book adaptations currently grinding their way through the Hollywood machine.

Who killed Edward Blake?  It just might be Peacemaker, the character that inspired the Alan Moore Watchmen character.  Let’s throw them both in the ring and see who emerges victorious.

As expected, the Zack Snyder adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ masterpiece Watchmen was the top movie this past weekend bringing in $55.7 million domestically and $83.2 million worldwide.  As great as that news is, Watchmen didn’t open as high as some had expected, not even meeting Zack Snyder’s last film, 300, which brought in $70.9 million domestically.

As hyped as audiences were after seeing the trailer that was tacked on to the Dark Knight Returns movie, I wonder what could be the reason for the lower than expected numbers?  Fans loyal to Alan Moore, boycotting the film?  Too much hype that overloaded and turned off potential audience?  Those waiting until next weekend to see the film in hopes of avoiding the large crowds this past weekend?  The R rating and two hour forty minute run time? Or is it the economy?

Those expressing caution turned out to have been right, so Warners had to manage expectations after the fact.

A substantial roadblock was “Watchmen’s” running time of 2:40. At that length, theaters couldn’t play as many runs of the pic as they did “300,” which ran under two hours.

“It truly makes a huge difference. Every studio wanted to attach their trailer to ‘Watchmen,’ so it ended up being more like three hours. When a movie is 2:40, there’s only one main show a day,” Warners prexy of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said. “We’re pleased with the opening.”

I went and saw the movie on Sunday, and there were less than a dozen people in the theater; great for me as I didn’t have to worry about all the talkers as I spilled nacho cheese everywhere, but not so good for those hoping comic book movies will remain strong draws at the box office.

Don’t forget, for those that did see the movie, we do have a talk back post for you to weigh in your thoughts.

Perhaps you’ve heard of this highly hyped Watchmen movie that opens today. Perhaps you were one of the fortunate masses, who stood in line for hours, only to wide up sitting next to that big sweaty smelly guy, who ended up dripping nacho cheese on your arm, but on the plus side offered you some of his Junior Mints, but you got to see the film before anyone else (although that other big sweaty smelly guy in front of you was blocking half the screen). Perhaps you were the big sweaty smelly guy who was annoyed by that person sitting behind you, who constantly complained about the smell, and the nacho cheese sauce that has ruined his cardigan.  Or perhaps you were the nacho cheese, and the only thing going through your head was, “Oh no, not again.”  In any case, here’s your chance to talk about the film; what worked, what didn’t, and why you are (or aren’t) going to see it again.  Oh, and feel free to be all spoilery, ’cause if you haven’t figured it out yet, that’s the name of the site Russell.

Variety is reporting the midnight showings of the Watchmen have already grossed the film $4.6 million.  The film opens in 3,611 theaters across the rest of the country today (now, depending on your time zone, or a couple of weeks ago if you are one of those that stumble into this site from some point in the future).

“300″ grossed $70.9 million in its opening weekend in early March 2006. Box observers believe “Watchmen” will beat that number, despite its lengthy running time of 2:40.

Will 100% of the Major Spoilers Legion be seeing the movie this weekend?

via Variety

I think things are slow today because everyone is in line for the Watchmen movie.  For the rest of you, here’s yet another Watchmen feature from CineMax.

Look at it this way, after Sunday, all this Watchmen stuff will disappear, and the Intarwebs will be a quiet, quiet place.
