AMC has been doing some big things in the cable realm over the last couple of years.  The Mad Men series took off like wildfire, and now it looks like AMC is looking to adapt Robert Kirkman’s Walking Dead for the small screen as well.

Frank Darabont is on board to write, direct and exec produce the project, with Gale Anne Hurd of Valhalla Pictures and David Alpert of Circle of Confusion also executive producing.

I’m glad a cable network picked up the rights to this property instead of a movie studio, which really couldn’t do justice to the comic book in a single movie.  While Darabont is a fine writer, it would be even better if Kirkman were on board to help write the screenplay.

I haven’t seen the sales numbers for Image Comics Walking Dead/Chew, but according to the company, the flipbook issue did amazing well.  So well in fact, that Image is repeating the flipbook idea with Walking Dead #64, which will feature the entire first issue of Viking #1 by Ivan Brandon and Mic Klein.

“The response to VIKING has been absolutely flooring in every way.  But the chance to expose the book to the entire massive WALKING DEAD fan base is a whole new level of exciting,” said Brandon. “Even though VIKING is normally in our full color oversized format, we were surprised by how incredible Nic’s art looked in black and white.  I think people are really going to love what they see.”

Kirkman added, “I’m personally psyched to have VIKING in the back of WALKING DEAD. As both an Image Partner and a fan, I’m thrilled by the book’s success and hope to continue its growth in any way I can.”

The 48-page Walking Dead/Viking issue arrives on stands on August 12, and even with the larger than normal page count, the issue will still be $2.99.

I like the flipbook concept, unless of course I’m stupid enough to pull two copies off the shelf thinking they are different without flipping through the issue first.  Anyhoo, Image Comics is taking the sold out #1 issue of Chew and packaging it with The Walking Dead #63.  This isn’t some half issue, or two page preview gimmick, Image is putting the full issue in the book, giving readers 2 comics for the price of one.

“As a creator, there’s nothing more satisfying than hearing that a lot of people are interested in reading your book. The flip side of this is there’s nothing more frustrating than hearing how people can’t get a hold of your book to read,” John Layman said in  a prepared statement. “So, Image and Robert Kirkman concocted this great plan to put CHEW in a lot of people hands– and for the unbeatable low, low price of ‘free’.”

The only drawback is the entire issue will be black and white, meaning the cool colors of Rob Guillory will be missing – at least until you go out and buy issue #2.

Walking Dead #63 arrives July 17, 2009 for $2.99.

Press Release

John Layman and Rob Guillory’s highly anticipated June-shipping ongoing crime series with a sick yet tasteful twist, CHEW, will make its first full appearance in the comic book blockbuster, THE WALKING DEAD, this May.

“Having CHEW debut in WALKING DEAD is extremely appropriate considering I hope CHEW does for cannibalism what WALKING DEAD did for zombies,” Layman said. “Seriously, Rob and I are very flattered to have CHEW debut in one of the biggest books out there today. While very different in its approach, I think fans of Kirkman and Adlard’s ongoing saga of human survival despite the worst possible situations will love Detective Tony Chu’s ongoing saga of surviving the worst possible situations despite his very distinct and sometimes burdening ability. It’s going to be a weird, wild ride.”

eccc-andrew_1.jpgThose attending the Emerald City ComiCon in May, and who love the rambling, shuffling moves of the undead, can get their hands on CS Moore’s latest Walking Dead Torso Statuettes featuring Andrew after he’s been bitten.

“We couldn’t resist doing something cool for the Emerald City ComiCon,” said Clayburn Moore. “This is our first time exhibiting at the show and we wanted to start with a splash, and what better way to do that than creating a unique collectible in the spirit of the ‘emerald city?’”

The emerald variant features a custom green paint job and will be limited to 300 copies, and will set you back a mere $30.00.
