Top Cow and Virgin Comics Crossover

Thursday, February 28th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

If you flipped through the last Previews, you probably saw the solicitation for the Top Cow/Virgin Comics Devi/Witchblade crossover. The company is finally making the announcement official, with a press release from the company.

“The crossover seemed like a perfect connection,” said Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik. “It was a natural fit to have the Witchblade and Devi meet each other. And to have writer Ron Marz at the helm for us was by far the logical choice.”

If nothing else, take the jump for the huge desktop sized image of the duo.

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008--by Joshua Hill

Being a member of the Major Spoilers team, but having not listened or participated in the Major Spoilers podcast, I was the perfect person to review Jenna Jameson’s Shadow Hunter for the site. Why? Because I hadn’t heard what apparently many of you have heard; that it was no good. All I know is that Stephen asked me to review it, and so I will.

Sadly, for any of you that enjoyed it, you won’t be getting a different answer; this comic book blowed. Don’t believe me? Proof after the jump!

Virulents Lands at New Regency

Thursday, September 6th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

image008.gif

image004.jpgVirgin Comics has announce its original graphic novel Virulents will be turned into a feature film produced by New Regency Productions.

Set in the Bermuda triangle-like hills of the Hindu Kush after 9/11, Virulents follows a motley crew consisting of American and Indian soldiers who must join forces as they respectively rove the Afghani hills in search of a lost platoon and missing weapon of mass destruction. But rather than stumble upon the militants they are expecting to find, they encounter a demon-like menace unlike the world has ever seen and must re-think their strategy and figure out a way to survive this confounding and rapidly growing evil.

Mined from the rich regional lore of South Asia, Virulents is actually a re-invention of the Raktaveej myth, a demon that as legend says, reproduced clones from his blood every time he was wounded in battle.

Virulents is an example of where we see Indias creativity going in the next decade and beyond. The fact that young creators can mine their ancestral vault of mythology, re-invent it, and get a major film studio like Fox excited to build a film franchise from it proves that Indian creators are amongst the worlds best and can think far beyond Bollywood said Virgin Comics Chief Creative Officer, Gotham Chopra in a prepared press release.

Production will begin in 2008 with John Moore directing.

Dan Dare Returns

Monday, August 27th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

Virgin Comics has announced it will be bringing the British adventurer Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future back to comic pages and to the silver screen.

Dare — described as Britain’s version of Buck Rogers — launched as a comic strip character in the Eagle magazine in the 1950s. He’s long been a favorite of Virgin topper Richard Branson, who led the effort to acquire the publishing, TV, movie and vidgame rights to Dare.

It was just a few years ago that Dan Dare was a 3D television series for overseas television. While the show never aired in the U.S., I was fortunate enough to know some of the crew working the series to get a glimpse of the then high quality work.

The new comic is set to debut in November with Garth Ennis, taking on the writing responsibilities. No word on a potential start date for the film.

Virgin’s Gamekeeper Coming to Screen

Thursday, July 26th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

It must be comics-2-film day here at Major Spoilers as the Internet is a buzz with tales of comic properties getting the cinematic treatment. My guess is as the week wraps, we’ll have plenty more to share with you.

The latest word is Guy Ritchie will be directing The Gamekeeper, the Virgin comic property Ritchie originally developed. Currently Andy Diggle writes the series for Virgin, which is the company’s first title to get picked up that is actually moving into the development stage.

Warner Bros. will release the film with Joel Silver producing under his Silver Pictues banner. Sharad Devarajan and Gotham Chopra of Virgin will executive produce, and Ritchie will direct.

“Gamekeeper” is part of Virgin’s Director’s Cut comic line, which also includes original titles from John Woo, Terry Gilliam, Shekhar Kapur, Jonathan Mostow, Ed Burns and Nicolas Cage.

You can read the first issue at Virgin’s website.

Jenna Jameson Comes to Comics

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

Yeah, I laughed at that title too. The Queen of Porn the Adult Film Industry, Jenna Jameson will be creating and starring in her own line of comic books. She’ll go by the name of Shadow Hunter and will wield a sword while presumably fighting evil.

jennashadowhunterlogo.jpgShadow Hunter is the story of a provocative superheroine who survives a brush with death only to find herself fighting the legions of hell for her very soul. Cover art for the first issue has been created by Greg Horn, a top illustrator of comic books and video games. The story, while provocative and sexy, contains no nudity and is intended for a mainstream audience.

Couple of things that make this one of the most fun posts of the day; 1) Virgin Comics will be publishing, 2) Surprisingly, Greg Land won’t be an artist on the series.

For you horny Jenna Jameson fans, Jenna will make an appearance at the San Diego Comic Con this week, signing autographs and talking up Shadow Hunter. She’s scheduled to appear on Saturday July 28 beginning at 4:30.
