A love story with monsters

In days of yore, people kept their windows and door locked at night for fear monsters would spirit their children away to make of them a mid-night snack. In the 1950s, monster flicks and horror movies gave teenagers a chance to neck in the car, while spooky spirits made mayhem on the screen. Today, the monster genre runs the gambit from graphic horror to zany comedy, but in all this time we haven’t seen too many tales of monster romance. Or more specifically, a vampire and a werewolf trying to find a home for themselves among the very humans they would eventually devour.

Josh Howard, scribe and artist behind Dead@17 has posted a preview of some of the pages from the upcoming Dead@17 Compendium (coming sometime soon).
Take the jump for some wonderful color art, but be warned; if you are one of those sensitive types or might get in trouble for viewing images of girls in their underwears duking it out with demons, you might want to wait until no one is around.

Josh Howard has updated his blog site with info regarding the delays with Dead@17 and other titles.
Dead @ 17: Three issues remain (5-7). At the rate this printing schedule is going, you won’t see them until next year. Plus, Diamond is breathing down my neck threatening cancellation (and understandably so). So what’s the solution? I’m going to make the final three issues available online for free, as they are completed, November through December/January. They won’t see actual print until the trade paperback release (containing all 7 issues) in March. I know it’s not the ideal situation, but I hope it will help make up for the delays.
According to Howard, Lost Books of Eve is on the way - sometime.

Getting the greenlight for a pilot a month ago, Viper Comics’ Middleman graphic novel now has a couple of stars - Matt Keeslar and Natalie Morales.
“Middleman” centers on Wendy Watson (Morales), a twentysomething struggling artist recruited by a secret agency to fight comic book-type villains. Keeslar will play the title character, a sci-fi superhero who serves as her guide. Gleason will play Ida, the robotic gatekeeper and veteran assistant to Keeslar.
Middleman is written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach who is also producing the pilot.
If you want to find out more about Middleman, check out the huge preview of the trade paperback over at Viper Comics’ website.

Josh Howard has been a really busy guy lately, and there has been a great deal of confusion as to when certain issues of Dead@17 and Lost Books of Eve are shipping. According to Mr. Howard himself, things have gotten a bit out of hand lately, and he is going ot end both series earlier than expected.
So, in order to fix the problem, which has begun to adversely affect my sales, Lost Books of Eve will be ending with issue 4, and Dead @ 17 will wrap up with issue 7 this fall. Don’t worry, though…I won’t leave you hanging. The current story arcs for both books will be wrapped up in satisfactory ways. This is what I have to do in order to re-start and get things back on track. I’m going to take a much needed break, but I think it’s safe to say you can expect both books to return sometime next year in some form or another. In the meantime, please enjoy the rest of the series. There are still some really big things in store…and if you’ve read the current issue of Dead, you know I’m not kidding.
Bummer - Dead@17 has always been on my must read list, and as much as I’ve gushed about Howard’s other works, it’s sad we’ll be without for a while. Hopefully everything will be sorted out and we’ll see more work sooner, than later.

I don’t remember if I mentioned it or not, but some creative types, got the go ahead from Josh Howard to produce an independent Dead@17 fan film. The film is finished, and Dread Central is hosting the film for the next 48 hours for all to see. Actually it’s less than 48 hours now, the film will be removed from the site Tuesday, June 19th - better get it now, or hope someone snags it and puts it up on the torrent.
It’s more of a teaser for something bigger, but it gets the general feel of the series right.

Wes Molebash over at You’ll Have That has been experimenting with different art styles. Today he posted a sketch of the series character Katie.

I like it. Don’t know if Wes is up doing the whole cast like this on a regular basis, but it would be interesting to see.

Josh Howard has posted images of the final sculpt for the Dead@17 Nara action figure. I like how this is looking and can’t wait to see the final paint job. I wonder if her outfit will be painted normally, or if it will be splattered in blood?

While I have no problem writing Best Of and Top Ten lists, this is my first year coming up with a Best Of list for comics, and it has been a real challenge. First there is the whole “thousands of titles out there” deal, then there is the fact that these kinds of lists are a touchy subject to write. What may be on my Best Of list, is on the @$$ List for someone else. Regardless, it’s time to look back over the year and see what was tops when it came to comics.

Not much info on this new project by Dead@17 creator Josh Howard, other than this cool looking image. Sasquatch looks like it will be a compilation book using the talents of many from Viper Comics, including You’ll Have That’s Wes Molebash. We’ll update you when we have more information.

Demons from outer space
Josh Howard continues his reboot of the Dead@17 Universe with new characters and situations, but the end is still the same – hard rockin, demon butt-kicking. Although not much of that is going on…yet. Our new hero ended up dead last issue, but as we might expect, she doesn’t stay dead for long.

If you’re not reading “You’ll Have That”, the question is “Why the F*#@ Not?” If you haven’t heard of “You’ll Have That”, then I got nothing for you, except get over to You’ll Have That and begin reading now. You’ll Have That: Volume 1 has been out for a while, and you may still be able to find a copy at Amazon.com, and now this holiday season, you can sit by the fire roasting chestnuts and laughing yourself silly with You’ll Have That: Volume 2 from Viper Comics.
“Wes’s strip just keeps getting better and better,” said Viper Comics President Jessie Garza. “This collection has some of the best and funniest strips he has produced and having them all in one place is the perfect way to get caught up in the lives of Andy and Katie.”

Viper Comics has announced they will now be accepting open submissions for a webcomic to join the company’s existing strips You’ll Have That and The Horrible Pirates.“Viper is always on the lookout for the newest talent in comics and hopefully this opportunity will allow us to showcase a great unknown to a world-wide audience,” said Viper President Jessie Garza.
Creators will need to provide sample pages/strips of their webcomic (with finished art) and a full pitch regarding the characters and content. Only submissions from complete creative teams will be accepted. All submissions should be sent to info@vipercomics.com .
The chosen webcomic will launch on the Viper Comics website alongside Viper’s You’ll Have That by Wes Molebash and The Horrible Pirates by Patrick Bussey.
You’ll Have That is a comic-strip about a young married couple updated every weekday. It has received one print collection with a second due in December.
The Horrible Pirates launched in late 2005 and has since been thrilling readers with the adventures of the world’s nastiest pirate crew and their evil monkey rivals. A print collection of the weekly comic is expected for 2007.
