Fans of the first Spawn movie, or the original comic book, or just a fan of Todd McFarlane, will get a kick out of the news that McFarlane has started worked on the screenplay for a new Spawn movie.

“The story has been in my head for 7 or 8 years,” McFarlane said. “The movie idea is neither a recap or continuation. It is a standalone story that will be R-rated. Creepy and scary.”

According to SuperHero Hype, the McFarlane is targeting older audiences for this film.

SPAWN, the long-running superhero saga recently relaunched by series creator Todd McFarlane and fellow Image Founder Whilce Portacio, kicks off the second half of its series altering storyline ‘Endgame’ with a distribution-level sell out making way for the upcoming collection.

“Our goal is to slowly build up momentum and the sellout of issue #191 is another indication that we’re accomplishing that goal,” McFarlane said. “With a majority of our single issues out of print, the release of the first Endgame collection couldn’t be more timely.”

spawntoyspicon.jpgIf you haven’t figured it out by now, those of us in the United States of America are going through some tough economic times.  The recession has caused massive layoffs in the publishing industry (with many magazines, and newspapers shutting down) to the point where my long running claim that print is dead may finally happen.   The bad times don’t just affect the print, automotive, and housing industries, however.  Todd McFarlane wrote an official announcement of the layoffs at toy company in the Spawn message board.

Actually, they sell out in a good way, as the duo’s return to Spawn caused issue #185 to sell out immediately at the distributor level.

“Obviously it’s good news to have the initial issue sell out so quickly, but now the bigger task is to continue that momentum in the issues going forward,” Spawn creator Todd McFarlane said. “As a reminder, the first few issues will be a lot of setup before we kick this into high gear.  Each issue isn’t meant to be its own stand-alone book.”

A second printing will arrive in stores soon, with a cover price of $2.95.

This November, The Adventures of Spawn will wrap up the Awaking War storyline written by Jonathan David Goff and illustrated by Khary Randolph.

In ADVENTURES OF SPAWN, Al Simmons, now known as Spawn X, teams up with fellow heroes Omega and Redeemer in the never-ending battle against the forces of Darkness and its vicious leader, Mammon! While ADVENTURES OF SPAWN made its debut online as SPAWN.COM’s very first web comic to coincide with McFarlane Toys’ own toy line (Spawn: Series 30 & 32), this one-shot is the only place to read the story’s conclusion in its entirety.

The 48-page one-shot will sell for $5.99 when it arrives on November 19, 2008.

WhilceSpawn.jpg

Image has announced two of its founds, Todd McFarlane and Whilce Portacio, will return to Spawn this October. Beginning with issue #185 the title character will return to its roots.

“While I’m very happy with where Spawn has gone, it’s long past time to inject some new blood into the series while also returning to its roots,” said McFarlane. “I feel what Whilce and I are doing with our co-writer, Brian Holguin, combines the old and the new in a way no one would have expected. That’s a claim which gets tossed around quite a bit in the industry, but this one really changes everything.”

More details of the changes will be announced by Image over the next couple of weeks.

Anyone who every read Spawn, or likes to get their hands on well crafted action figures, has heard of Todd McFarlane.  But how many of you have had the opportunity to actually interview the man?   Long time friend of Major Spoilers, and host of the ELR and The Instance podcasts, Scott Johnson (www.myextralife.com) got the word from Todd, and ended up interviewing him for both shows.

What I did not expect was to come away with a wealth of advice and life lessons as a cartoonist. Any of you that are interested in art, drawing, cartooning, whatever…you HAVE to listen to this interview. Hopefully you will pull out some of the same nuggets that I did…gaining a new perspective from someone who has done it and done it in spades is really really powerful for me. Did I mention that he was just about as nice a guest as you could ever hope for?

Congratulations Mr. Johnson on landing a terrific interview!  For those of you who have not heard of ELR, check it out here.  I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Scott for about four years now, and have even had the pleasure of helping to sponsor his Nerdtacular event for two years now.

Now if Mr. McFarlane would like to appear on the Major Spoilers Podcast, he is welcome anytime… (cheesy grin).

bondagedorothy.jpg

Remember a few years ago when Todd McFarlane released a line of toys with his interpretation of L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz?  Now that toy idea is going to be turned into a movie with McFarlane producing.  Josh Olson, who did a History of Violence will write.

But I don’t think we’ll be seeing a bondage Dorothy.

“I saw those toys, and Dorothy as some bondage queen isn’t something I want to do,” Olson told Daily Variety. “The appealing thing about the Baum books to me is how wildly imaginative they are. There are crazy characters from amazing places. I want this to be ‘Harry Potter’ dark, not ‘Seven’ dark.”

McFarlane is hoping for some 2007 wow factor, but the plot specifics are being closely guarded. I’d just be happy with some 2010 wow factor, which is more likely when the film would be released.
