Yes, it is a re-imagining of a classic character, and yes, there is probably some scene chewing going on, but the action and the way RHI Entertainment is approaching the subject, has me putting this on my TiVo list.
Can’t let the Pulp Hero Art Appreciation Moment of the Week go by without featuring The Phantom. This rendition is done by Daniel Campos. While good, it’s just too bad his inspiration for today’s installment, came from watching Defenders of the Earth.

Got the itch to doodle up this mess while watching Defenders of the Earth on DVD this morning before hitting the workload. I think this is maybe the second time I’ve ever drawn The Phantom but he’s really a groovy character.
This week we’re going to go with another theme for our Art Appreciation Moments of the Day. This week the theme is Pulp Heroes, and kicking us off is the sketch by Scott Godlewski featuring a great group shot of the heroes.

So… uh… the kids over at the SciFi (SyFy) Wire have released a sneak peek at the costume design for the channel’s update to the classic comic strip character The Phantom.
The Phantom stars Ryan Carnes (Desperate Housewives, Doctor Who) as the title hero and as his alter ego, Chris Walker, in this re-imagined version of the classic comic strip, which has been updated to the present day.
Well there’s purple in the costume, but it reminds me a lot more of the costume design seen in Smallville than a classic hero from 1936.
Two words – Laura. Vandervoort. the Sci Fi (or Syfy depending if you want to buy into the new name or not) has announced the Smallville star will take a leading role in the cable network’s production of Riverworld, while Ryan Carnes of Desperate Housewives fame has been cast as the Phantom.
Also joining the Riverworld cast are Tahmoh Penikett, Alan Cumming, Jeananne Goossen, and Mark Deklin. Guest starring in The Phantom will be Isabella Rosselini, Cameron Goodman and Sandrine Holt.
Both movies will be four hours in length and will air next year.

The Sci Fi Channel has announced it will bring its own take on the classic comic book character The Phantom to the small screen in 2010. Moonstone Books currently publishes the print adventures of the ghost that walks, but Sci Fi thinks a four hour movie will be pretty kick-ass.
“That there hasn’t been a successful ‘Phantom’ leaves the door wide open for us, since nobody has made it their own yet,” said Robert Halmi Jr., president and CEO of RHI entertainment. “The four-hour format allows us to command large dollars around the world for our shows that puts about ($4 million-$6 million) of production on the screen per hour. It gives the network a chance to try a concept with the same production values, if not better, than you’d get for a series.”
The team up with RHI entertainment has three features, Alice in Wonderland, The Phantom, and Philip Jose Farmer’s Riverworld coming to the network.
Moonstone has sent Major Spoilers the solicitation information for titles arriving in May 2008.
Moonstone Books has announced its title shipping in July.
