Rapid-Fire Review III: This Time It’s Personal!

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008--by Matthew Peterson

Or - “Comics Move Pretty Fast. If Ya Don’t Slow Down Once In A While, You Could Miss ‘Em.

So, how YOU doin?  When I joined the intrepid staff here at Stately Spoilers Manor, I was a carefree young lad, temping at a dog food company and literally finding myself with hours at work to stare into space.  Ahh, those were the heady days of cafeteria food and three-a-day reviews.  Now that I have a *real* job, my first in several years, I’m horrified to find that I have to spend 8 or 9 hours per day ACTUALLY WORKING.  Uncool, to say the least.  But, the faithful Spoilerites continue to call their siren call, and the review pile continues to expand like the waistline of an Atlantic City call girl (those all-you-can-eat buffets can really add up.)  Thus, I bring you another episode of…  RAPID FIRE REVIEWS!

The Boys Headed to Big Screen

Thursday, February 21st, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

boys_comic.jpgVariety is reporting this morning that Columbia Pictures has obtained the rights to Garth Ennis’ The Boys.

Created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the contemporary-set comicbook series follows a CIA squad, known informally as “the boys,” whose job is to keep watch on the proliferation of superheroes and, if necessary, intimidate or eliminate them.

I say this is good news for Dynamite Entertainment, but got to be a big sore spot for DC who tried to kill the title due to its graphic nature and content.

The Boys #8

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007--by Matthew Peterson

Or - “This One Should Be Mighty Interesting…”

Boys10.jpg

I’ve long been a Garth Ennis fan, dating back to his run on Hellblazer, a cornerstone of my pull list for nearly 20 years now.  I’m approaching today’s recap with trepidation (and not a small sense of excitement) simply because of the fact that most of what I enjoy about Garth’s work is his unerring sense of where the line of propriety is drawn.  ‘Course, he matches that with a boundless joy of not only crossing the line, but gleefully finding that point so far beyond good taste that it almost crosses the meridian back into acceptibility.  We’re moving into delicate territory here, and I’m gonna be tap-dancing a fine line, as The Boys is decided rated ‘R,’ and Major Spoilers is in the area of a sketchy ‘PG-13.’  Fasten your seatbelts, Spoilerators, ’cause it’s bound to be a bumpy ride…

Second Printing for The Boys on the Way

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

picon.jpg

Dynamite Entertainment has announced the recently acquired The Boys by Garth Ennis has sold out and issue #7 will be going back to press with a new cover by Darick Robertson and Tony Avina.

Dynamite stated. “It’s great news to welcome Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s The Boys to such a strong response, and we’re very happy to present this second printing alternate cover as fans have devoured this first Dynamite issue! Retailers and industry professionals have been discussing the issue and our good friend Cliff Biggers had summed up their feelings by saying he wanted to keep #7 on the racks as long as he could. And we’re happy to oblige, as keeping The Boys in print is an important goal. We’re also near out of the first print of the TPB and keeping our eye towards a new printing in the near future! “

Take the jump for the full cover.

The Boys Land at Dynamite

Saturday, March 10th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

The_Boys_007_COV.jpgDynamite Entertainment has made the official announcement that Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s The Boys has found a home with the company. Issue #7 will be available in June, continuing the series. Dynamite also announced plans to publish the first trade paperback, collecting issues 1-6 in June as well.

“I’d like to thank Paul Levitz and everyone at DC Comics and Jim Lee and everyone at Wildstorm Productions for helping make this a smooth transition,” said Nick Barrucci. “I’m pleased to welcome the Boys to Dynamite Entertainment and look forward to working with Garth and Darick for years to come.”

“I’d like to thank all concerned at both DC and Dynamite for making this such a smooth and civilized transition,” said Garth Ennis. “My priority now is to get back to work on The Boys.”

“I’m quite excited about the opportunities that our series the Boys will gain by moving to Dynamite! I am also looking forward to many more years with DC Comics, working on a variety of excellent projects with the great people I know there,” said Darick Robertson. “I believe that this has been an unlikely ‘win-win’ situation for all involved, and glad we can all move on, still smiling. I’m thankful to Paul Levitz and the DC staff for making this a smooth transition.”

Boys Get Picked Up at Dynamite

Thursday, February 8th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

theboys.gifFans of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s The Boys, which was recently dropped by Wildstorm, has been picked up by Dynamite Entertainment.

The series had a strong fan base (27,039 copies sold in North America in December), so why did DC drop the book? The company isn’t commenting, but certain hardcore hamster-lovin’ content may have had something to do with it.

Even though the series is creator owned, DC could have c-blocked the title from moving to any other publisher, but I praise the company for making the transition to Dynamite a smooth one.

Reports have Dynamite working out the publishing plans right now and we should see a publishing schedule for The Boys in the near future.
