Leave it up to a fan to ask Ryan Ottley for a commission of Invincible and Superboy Prime fighting.  It’s a cool concept and one we are happy to life for our own nefarious deeds.  So, we ask you, the Legion of Major Spoilerites, in a battle, who would win, Invincible or Superboy Prime?

It’s a fight to the finish, if they ate their spinach!

Or – “Reconnecting With Old Friends…”

AC2_1.jpg

Last time out, Kon-El caught up with Wonder Girl, the love of his life and founding member of Young Justice.  She told him of her grief-fueled kiss with Tim Drake, who was Robin at the time, and they forgave one another for youthful indiscretions and/or untimely death.  This discussion seems to have spurred Kon to look up his ex-best pal, but the new Red Robin (YUMMM!) is somewhat busy trying to track down a millionaire who is stuck in a cave somewhere…  Will their reunion be as cordial as the first?

If we do a retcon, will it make that lawsuit go away?

supermansecretorigin1PICON.jpg

Superman, Krypton, Smallville, Lex Luthor, Superboy, Lana Lang, rocket ship, super suit, heat vision, Ma and Pa Kent, glasses, and a spit curl; everything you already know about Superman’s history.  The origin story has been told so many times I would bet you could walk up to some hot girl on the street and ask her about any of these, and she would know what you were talking about.  So why, oh why, did DC give the light to Geoff Johns to retcon the well known origin story?

Or – “Kryptonian Powers And Mental Issues?  That’ll Work Out…”

Adv1_copy.jpg

Connor Kent’s return from the dead has not been without it’s complications.  Last issue, we saw his attempts to get back to normal and figure out the Superman side of his genetic makeup.  Problem is, he’s also trying to figure out his other genetic donor, one Lex Luthor.  Kon-El is headed down a slippery slope, and the return of Cassandra Sandsmark to his life ain’t gonna make things any less confusing…

Or – “Boys Of An Unusually Superhuman Nature…”

During the Hero History Project, I have taken a few liberties here and there in the manner and tone in which I convey the life and times of the various Legionnaires.  One of the most controversial has been my use of the name Tom Welling to refer to Kal-El’s boyhood career in the LSH and elsewhere, a choice which has led many people to pointedly needle me, even going so far as to question my journalistic integrity.  With tongue firmly in cheek, I would like to respond thusly…   Point the first:  I make no pretense of being a journalist, and thus my integrity remains mint-in-package.  Point the second:  At the time the Hero Histories began, DC Comics was embroiled in a legal battle causing them to eschew the use of a certain S-word, and thus it was timely to make a joke (that I then proceeded to beat into the ground, as is the way of my people.)  Point the third:  My project, my rules, I make ‘em up.  But as this last Hero History actually began to take form (which is the primary reason that you haven’t seen much of me this last week) it became quite clear that continuing with the joke would have finally been too much, even for me.  Moreover, it would undermine the point of the Hero History:  To examine each Legionnaire on their own terms, and to look at their own flaws and virtues on an individual basis, and to try and quantify what it is that he, she, or it brings to the table, jokes be damned.  Given the historical importance of today’s entrant, I could do no less.

You’ve waited patiently, Faithful Spoilerites, the day that I’ve been dreading (and that you’ve all been waiting to see if I could actually pull off) is here.  This, then is your Major Spoilers Hero History of Kal-El of Krypton, who became known as Clark Kent of Earth, as well as his young clone, Kon-El of Metropolis.  They call them both…

Or – “The Far-Flung World Of 1935!”

“Boss, boss!  I got the next big thing in them funnybooks!  We’ll call it “Adventure Comics #1!”  This ought to be a big hit, see?  And we’re thinking that if this Adventure thing works out, we’ve got something called Action Comics ready to go, and Detective Comics in the wings, and maybe even a Fun Comics if we’re freeling really froogy.  As soon as we get back from seeing this new play called “Our Town,” we should think of things to put in this here new comics book.  Maybe some sort of future characters with bubble helmets and flyin’ belts!  Ooh, and y’know that Superman thing Joe and I have been working on for the last couple years?  How ’bout we do that same character, only as a boy, see?  That way, my kids can sue the pants off the company in 70 years or so!  Let’s hope President Roosevelt can put a lid on that Spanish Civil War thingy so this book will sell like hotcakes!”

or “BUS 422: Introduction to Law really does have its uses!”

Superboy Tom Welling may indeed return to DC after the latest ruling from the courts that overturns the Siegel (Joanne and Laura) lawsuit against Time Warner.

Jeff Trexler has a summary of the latest ruling at his site.

In a nutshell, the court ruled in favor of Time Warner’s motion to reconsider the prior ruling in favor of the Siegels and vacated the relevant portions of the earlier ruling, including part of the statement of facts.

The judge’s opinion is worth reading on several counts, especially for crisp review of the history of the Superman/Superboy cases. William Patry has a brief run-down on the estoppel issues, which will seem a bit esoteric to non-lawyers, but you should not let the law-geek bait get in the way of the judge’s analysis of whether Superboy is a derivative work. (pp. 66-71). The judge calls for further briefing on that issue but, as reviewing judges often do, lays out a roadmap for concluding that Superboy was nothing “more than a trivial variation from the pre-existing material in Superman, other comic book characters in general, or even more broadly with other comic book characters.” (p. 69)

Of course, this case is far from over, so there may be still more surprises to come.

Well somebody needs to decide something soon as our Major Spoilers Dictionary and constant references to Superboy Tom Welling will have to go through a retcon that would make even the heads at DC spin.

You can read the entire ruling for yourself at here.

superboycostume.jpgOver 1000 iconic Hollywood items go up on the auction block August 2 and 3, with one of the more interesting items being the Superboy Tom Welling costume worn by John Haymes Newton in that 1980s television series Tom Welling Superboy.

According to the eBay Live Auction site, the costume is expected to go for between $3,000 and $5,000.

Other Superman items on auction include an original 1970 letter from Jerry Siegel looking for work, Billy Curtis (The lead ‘moleman’) costume from Superman and the Mole-Men ($3,000-$5,000), Original concept sketches of Superman’s childhood on the farm from Superman: The Movie ($2,000-$3,000), Fortress of Solitude clear crystal from Superman: The Movie ($800-$1,000), Three prop newspapers from the Superman films ($300-$500), and a Kryptonite Box from Superman III ($2,000-$3,000).

Considering I didn’t get to go to San Diego this year, perhaps I’ll use that money to bid on that costume so it can be added to the Collection Room of Major Spoilers HQ.

Oh god, here’s a flashback to my high school days. Getting to see Superboy was hit and miss for me because a) the local channel kept bouncing it around the time slot clock b) I lived in the middle of nowhere and the aerial antenna didn’t always pick up the channel in question. Thankful I can relive my childhood with the help of  YouTube.
