Studio 407 has picked up the Smuggling Spirits series from the defunct Ambrosia publishing and is releasing the Ben Fisher and Michael Henderson as a trade this April.

Studio 407’s managing director Alex Leung says “We picked up Smuggling Spirits from Ambrosia, and we thought it was an incredible book that went under the radar, and did not get the exposure it deserved when it was first released in single volumes. I think both Ben and Michael are incredible talents to watch for and their skills have meshed perfectly to produce an incredibly unique storytelling experience. We feel extremely fortunate to be involved with this book.”

Studio 407 has sent Major Spoilers a sneak peek, that you can read after the jump.

While the human undead genre may be tapped out, Studio 407 plans on taking the zombie genre to a new level with alien zombies in its new series Netherworld.

“I’ve been writing genre for as long as I can remember. So, I was kicking around a novel idea and was trying to describe the creature concept in the story to a friend and made the off-hand comment, “well it’s not like they’re alien zombies or anything…” Jones continues “And I stopped. And I thought, hmm…. that would be kind of awesome. Alien zombies. Hell, I gotta write that! And suddenly, Netherworld became my obsession. Everything else that I had been writing, planning to write or thinking about writing, got put to the side and I started hammering the keyboard like a mad person. And Netherworld came out in a flourish of alien body parts, political intrigue, humans running for their lives and lots and lots of blood,” said series writer Chad Jones in a prepared statement.

Check out a sneak peek of the first issue, after the jump.

Studio 407 will release its Hybrid series in trade paperback form on February 25, 2009.  If you didn’t get a chance to read the individual issues, now might be a good time to read the collection before the movie adaptation hits theaters.

“This was a real opportunity to take an old fashioned genre, the classic monster story, and bring it into the 21st century. says Hybrid writer Peter Kwong. “The ‘hybrid” is unlike any creature that you’ve ever seen; yet, like all classical monsters, it’s very much rooted in contemporary fears and anxieties. That always makes it more interesting as a writer, and, I hope, the audience will agree.”

Studio 407 has provided a sneak peek at the first issue, that you can read after the jump.

Studio 407 has sent Major Spoilers its rundown of tiles and cover images for items arriving in stores in April 2009.  It’s a short list, but one that might be of interest to some.  Most interesting to me is the Smuggling Spirits trade featuring monsters during the 1920s.
