Your Friday Sing-a-long

If you haven’t heard William Shatner belt out Pulp’s Common People, then I feel sorry for you my friend. Fortunately, through the magic of YouTube, there are plenty of versions available including this custom video (I actually prefer Shat’s version).

Now take it a step further and put those words into the mouth’s of Archie and his gang and you get this brilliant piece of humor from Chris’s Invincible Super-Blog.

You really need to see the entire mash-up.

Damn you Chris! Now everytime I read Archie, Shatner will be in my head.

Star Trek Year Four Gets Top Talent

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

ST_yf_promo.jpgIDW Publishing has announced D.C. Fontana, Derek Chester, artist Gordon Purcell, and inker Terry Pallot will join forces for IDW Publishings Star Trek Year Four: The Enterprise Experiment.

For The Enterprise Experiment, Fontana and Chester have crafted a sequel to Fontana’s celebrated Star Trek episode “The Enterprise Incident”, in which Kirk famously posed as a Romulan to capture a new state-of-the-art cloaking device. In this all-new story, Federation efforts to fully adapt the cloaking device to Starfleet ships leads to an experiment gone awry, trapping Kirk and Spock on an Enterprise out of phase with space itself. At the same time, Romulan forces close in on the starship, intent on claiming revenge for their stolen technology. Later chapters in the series will provide a sequel to the first two issues, as the Klingonâ„¢ Empire-with its own agenda-suddenly enters the fray.

Even though this is D.C. Fontana’s first attempt at comic writing, she’s written enough Star Trek episodes (original, TNG, the animated series, and Deep Space Nine) that I think this could be a huge hit for Star Trek fans.

The first issue of The Enterprise Experiment goes on sale in April for $3.99.

Writer’s Strike Fallout

Thursday, February 28th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

primestrike.jpg

The writer’s strike may be over, but the effects are still be felt through the industry. While Warner Bros. is pushing ahead with the Justice League movie, other features could be delayed as the industry scrambles to regroup following the settlement, and await the next big walk out.

The next walk out? The Screen Actor’s Guild is next up to the table to negotiate contracts, and even the slightest hint of a strike is causing the studios to hold off on any new productions that can’t wrap shooting by June 30.

“Transformers 2″ director Michael Bay said the labor cloud has made the process harder, but not impossible as he tries to keep the film on track for its June 26, 2009 release.

“If there is a strike, we shut down, but shutting down isn’t that big a deal,” Bay said. “You make accommodations, you make a deal with vending houses on equipment and on the stages where you are shooting. You hope for the best, but you can’t be incapacitated by the possibility that there will be a strike. We’ve got to get this town back to work. I can’t imagine anyone wants another strike, we’re all tired. Hopefully clearer heads will prevail.”

Bay said that the sequel is still recovering from the writer’s strike, and that he’s playing catch-up after getting back his trio of writers, Ehren Kruger, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

If Miller can’t get his JLA movie done in time, we could hear word in the next couple of months that the film has been delayed again. The new Terminator movie begins shooting May 5, while Transformers begins shooting in early June. If the actors strike, look for all sort of shuffling as the studios scramble to fill the summer 2009 schedule.

Paramount may have anticipated the delay when the studio announced it was moving the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie from a December 2008 release to the now scheduled May 2009 date.

IDW Nabs Star Trek: New Frontier

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

ST_nf_promo.jpgIDW has announced Peter David’s Star Trek: New Frontier will be coming to the comic pages.

In the new story, Turnaround, the most dangerous experimental vessel in the galaxy-a prototype time ship-has vanished, and it appears that the man who stole it is none other than Starfleet Admiral Edward Jellico. Only Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and the crew of the Excalibur have a hope of finding him before the ship, intended purely for scientific exploration, is used to disrupt the space-time continuum.

For fans of the series, this is the first time the crew of the Excalibur has appeared in their own series (the crew did appear in a Wildstorm one-shot in 2000).

Toy Fair 2008: Diamond Select Toys

Saturday, February 16th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

It’s already been announced that Diamond Select Toys will be unveiling a new quarter-scale action figure line featuring characters from the Star Trek universe, but check out this shot from the DST booth at the American Toy Fair in New York.

borg.JPG

Launching this summer, the new Star Trek Ultimate Quarter Scale line will feature detailed cloth outfits and sculpted accessories from the rich Star Trek universe. Each figure will also include authentic voice effects from the Star Trek films and television series. Measuring over eighteen inches tall and containing twenty-one points of articulation, the Star Trek Ultimate Quarter Scale line’s hyper realistic detail and super-poseability combine to create the ultimate in Star Trek collectibles.

My guess is Borg figures are going to be featured heavily in this collection. Now if DST would only release a life size version of these, I could work on my on Star Trek experience like the one in Las Vegas.

The show kicks off tomorrow (Sunday Feb. 17).

Star Trek Delayed Until 2009

Thursday, February 14th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

StarTrekXILogo.jpgFor those of you who already asked Santa for tickets to the new Star Trek that was scheduled to open December 25, 2008, you’re going to be pretty disappointed when your stocking comes up empty Christmas morning.

Variety is reporting the J.J. Abrams’ film has been pushed back to May 2009, which might make the studio more money as a summer run could draw a larger audience than the holiday.

Move was part of a major reshuffling to the studio’s release calendar, as well as to DreamWorks’ release sked. Like Par, many of the majors are likely to revisit their release skeds in the wake of the writers’ strike as they try to balance out their 2008 and 2009 calendars.

“Star Trek” has no competition in its new slot — at least not so far, although it opens one week after 20th Century Fox bows “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and one week before Sony is slated to bow sequel “Angels and Demons.”

Well this is sad news for the Trekkers and the Trekies whom I’m sure were eagerly awaiting a time travel story featuring a young and old Spock, the Kobayashi maneuver, and yet another interpretation of the Enterprise. Don’t worry fans, an additional six months won’t kill you.

Khaaaan!

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

khantoy.jpgDiamond Select Toys has announced the next new figure from retro-inspired Star Trek cloth figures will be Khan Noonien Singh. Unlike the Kirk, Spock, and Klingon figures that were based on molds from the original Mego line, Khan is a brand new sculpt that features the same level as detail as the rest of the line.

Genetically engineered during Earth’s Eugenics Wars centuries earlier, Khan attempted to gain the crew’s trust and take over the Enterprise for his own purposes. Barely stopped by Captain James T. Kirk, Khan was exiled to the distant Ceti Alpha V and forgotten. Refusing to abandon his quest for vengeance, Khan would later return and again almost destroy the Enterprise – this time claiming Spock as a casualty.

Khan is a limited edition figure that will only be found at Hastings and Planet X stores around the country.

Uhura Cast in Abrams Star Trek Flick

Monday, September 17th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

zoe_saldana.jpg

Hollywood Reporter is reporting Zoe Saldana is in final negotiations to play Lt. Uhura in J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie.

Plot details are begin kept under wraps, but it is understood that the movie chronicles the early days of the Enterprise crew. Saldana will join Anton Yelchin as a young Chekov, the Russian-born navigator, as well as Zachary Quinto as a young Spock. Leonard Nimoy, who originated the role of Spock, is on board as well.

Since everyone is tight lipped on this project, it is rather hard to say if I am excited or dissappointed. I think I’m pretty much burned out on Star Trek movies and J.J. Abrams projects, so unless the two come together in the best movie of the year, I’ll probably wait until it comes to the pay-per-view.

Season One Riker Figure On the Way

Thursday, September 6th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

rikerfigure.jpg

Diamond Select Toys has announced an exclusive Season One William T. Riker action figure as part of the Star Trek: The Next Generation 25th 20th Anniversary.

Holy crap, has it been 20 years since the debut of The Next Generation? I suddenly feel really really old.

For those wanting to get their mitts on the figure head over to Suncoast and F.Y.E. Although with the recent troubles Suncoast has had, you better get there in the next 30 days before the company declares bankruptcy.

60’s flava returns in IDW series

STYearFourPicon.jpg

It was supposed to be a five year mission, but thanks to low ratings, NBC cancelled the series after three. After some 11 movies, five spin-off series, and more individual episodes than you can shake a stick at, there was still the question of what happened to the five year mission to seek out new life and new civilization. IDW has answered with a six issue series aptly called Star Trek: Year Four.

IDW sent an advanced peek at the series. Better set your phasers to stunned as Major Spoilers brings you the advanced review. You better believe there are spoilers ahead!

Star Trek Mission Continues

Monday, May 21st, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

trekyear4cover.jpg Just like Buffy Season 8, fans of the original Star Trek series never got their five year mission. Well IDW Publishing plans to continue the mission to seek out new life and new civilizations in Star Trek: Year Four.

The series will present an entire self-contained “episode” in every issue. The debut issue begins when the crew discovers a multi-planet construct of a dead civilization, which is run by a brilliant genetic scientist who’s obsessed with repopulating it. When Captain Kirk discovers the scientist’s secret, his creations revolt, forcing Kirk to make the hard decision to push the Enterprise into crossfire.

Star Trek: Year Four is written by David Tischman, with art by Steve Conley. The 32-page first issue of a six-issue miniseries debuts July 2007.
