As much as I want my son to learn a second or third language, I don’t think I would have ever thought to have used my child as a science experiment. d’Armond Speers decided he would teach his son to speak Klingon, and total immersion was the only way to do it. For the first three years of his son’s life, the only language d’Armond spoke around the boy was Klingon.
“I was interested in the question of whether my son, going through his first language acquisition process, would acquire it like any human language,” Speers told the Minnesota Daily. “He was definitely starting to learn it.”
d’Armond does have a doctorate in computational linguistics, and it should be pointed out he did this “experiment” 15 years ago (which probably helped his doctoral research). Regardless, the boy did learn bits of the Klingon language, but now speaks normally to communicate effectively with other children. My guess is he discovered girls don’t like jibber-jabber, and switched to the smooth vocal stylings of Barry White.

Show Notes after the Jump!

Marvel or DC? Coke or Pepsi? ABC or CBS? Taste Great, or Less Filling? This week’s Major Spoilers Poll of the Week wants to know if you are a die hard Star Trek or a die hard Star Wars fan?
UPDATE: Looking at the poll right now, it doesn’t look like the results are going to turn out like the hidden Easter Egg found in today’s release of Star Trek on DVD. (HINT: Click the image for the full view)
Check out this deleted scene from the J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movie. It’s a pretty cool interrogation scene between Nero and Klingons on the planet Rura Penthe.
I like this on a number of levels – animation, art style, the fact that it is all in Klingon – and combining them together in one bit totally rocks. It’s nice to see there are actual gems to be found on YouTube.
Harlan Ellison posted on his Website that he has settled his lawsuit against Paramount Pictures over his script for the now classic episode, “City on the Edge of Forever”. The suit arose from Ellison’s claims that Paramount had failed to pay secondary use rights from the episode, and that the Writer’s Guild (WGA) failed to act on his behalf.
Press Release
Space was the final frontier for Capt. James T. Kirk and his crew – and now it is the next frontier for eFX Inc., which today announced that it will introduce new high-end collectibles based on the classic Star Trek films and TV series.
eFX will introduce its Star Trek collectibles, licensed from CBS Consumer Products, later this year with the Mark IX Tricorder as seen in Star Trek: First Contact – and it’s just the first of many contacts that eFX plans for fans to be able to make with the seminal science-fiction TV and movie series, which holds a special place in the hearts of eFX’s development team.

Have you ever read a book, listened to an album, or watched a movie where at the end, you couldn’t decide whether or not you liked it? You think “This book/album/movie seemed good enough, so why can’t I say I liked it?” I know I have. I usually get this weird, uneasy feeling whenever this happens. Luckily for the majority of you, you don’t have to sit down and write a review about your experience. So bear with me folks, as I attempt to review the film Free Enterprise, and maybe discern whether or not I ultimately liked it or not.
