Wow. At first I wanted to see this simply for the cheese popcorn fun factor. Now I’m not so sure…
Here’s a behind the scenes look at Speed Racer…more or less.
Look closely in your local comic shop and you just might find the original Speed Racer stories by Tatsuo Yoshida in a brand new collected hardcover.
The two volume set has been restored by Digital Manga Publishing, and with the movie arriving in theaters soon, the company made the wise decision to get this collection in stores this month.
Speed Racer: Mach Go Go Go has a suggested price of $39.95, but if you know where to look, I bet you can find it cheaper.
Or - “Here He Comes, Here… Naah, Even I Can’t Do That With A Straight Face…”

Oh, no! Speed Racer has returned to comics, whatever shall we do, HA HA! I think the only option is to talk reallyreally fast HA HA! If only we weren’t being poorly dubbed into English, HA HA! Chin Wa! Chin Wa! He will not let me get rice cakes… for FATHER!!! A ha ha haaaa!
Yahoo! Movies has the four new posters for the upcoming Speed Racer movie. I’m fond of the Racer X version myself.

As announced yesterday on this site, Harely Quinn will be making an appearance in the next wave of Batman sets. Today, LEGO sent Major Spoilers images of the Harley set (she’s with Batman’s bat-cycle), and as a bonus, an image of one of the Speed Racer movie tie-in sets.
Variety is reporting Christian Oliver has joined the ast of Warner Bros.’ Speed Racer. No word on what characters Oliver will play, as all the good parts are taken.

According to an article in the Hollywood Reporter, Richard Roundtree has joined the cast of Warner Bros.’s Speed Racer. Roundtree will play Ben Burns, a racer-turned commentator and a hero to Speed (Emile Hirsch).
“Man, I hear that Ben Burns is one bad mutherfu-”
“Shut your mouth!”
“I’m just talkin’ ’bout Ben Burns. Can you dig it?”
Holy craparooni! I just hope the Speed Racer film is a tad bit better than this piece of art.
Behold! The Mach 5!

The film, Silver says, will have a “retro future” look and will center on Speed (Emile Hirsch) trying to make a name for himself in the racing world despite the efforts of corporate giants to foil his career. The film also stars Christina Ricci as girlfriend Trixie and Matthew Fox as Speed’s older brother, Racer X.
I was really concerned the Wachowski’s would be taking a hatchet to the popular characters, but after looking at this beautifully crafted racer, and learning Chim Chim won’t be computer generated, my fears just took a step back.
The Hollywood Reporter reports this morning that Christina Ricci has joined the cast of the film adaptation of Speed Racer directed by the Larry and Andy Wachowski. She will play Speed’s girlfriend Trixie. Ricci joins Emile Hirsch (Speed), John Goodman (Pops) Susan Sarandon (Pops’ wife), and Zac Efron (playing Sparky or Spritle).
“Speed” centers on a young race car driver, Speed (Hirsch), and his quest for glory in his thundering, gadget-laden vehicle Mach 5. Ricci will star as Speed’s girlfriend Trixie, his formidable ally on and off the track
This could be one of those really weird breakout movies if the Wachowskis pull it off. All of the actors bring a wealth of experience to the flick, but this is essentially a popcorn movie in the same category as Fast and the Furious, XXX, and Driven. Okay, so maybe Driven is the best example, but you get the idea. I imagine we’ll see something similar to the Matrix meets Fast and the Furious and that is good enough for me. I just wonder who will be playing Racer X?
According to the Reporter, the Wachowskis are planning to shoot this summer with a release expected in 2008.
